  1. Matt Peet gave his opinion after his youthful Warriors side fell short against Huddersfield on Thursday night.Peet: “We had times where we were close but ultimately whenever we were set-for-set Huddersfield looked the stronger team in collision.”FT | Huddersfield Giants 32-22 Wigan Warriors. Matt Peet credited Huddersfield and said his side had ‘no excuses’ after falling short against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday night. “We had times where we were close but ultimately whenever we were set-for-set Huddersfield looked the stronger team in collision. They played more fluent than us, so credit to them,” he said. “All our team are full time professionals, they train together day-in, day-out since the start of pre-season so there’s no excuses.” Despite the result, Peet did praise the efforts of some of his younger players: “Some of the young lads will benefit from it, I think everyone needs to learn from tonight. I thought Logan and Matty both stood up well and James McDonnell had some glimpses, they will be better for the experience, but I also thought they didn’t look out of place.” On Matty Nicholson, who scored a double on debut: “We know the capabilities Matthew has got, he has a good rugby sense. He carried strong when he was on, hopefully we see more of Matthew. Credit to Newcastle and the work they’ve done with him, Eamon O’Carroll, Denis Betts – he is in their system more than he’s in ours so it shows the benefit of what they’ve been doing with him.” One to remember! Matty Nicholson scores on his @WiganWarriorsRL debut #SuperLeague #SLHudWig pic.twitter.com/mppP1SKxuW — Betfred Super League (@SuperLeague) May 12, 2022 Peet also spoke about Logan Astley who made his debut at half back this evening: “I am happy with Logan’s progression, the way he trains and I thought he showed tonight that he handled it physically which with Logan being a young half back would be anyone’s concern. I have every confidence in throwing him in again, we all think a lot of him, he’s building nicely and he’ll certainly be better and more confidence from tonight.” Finalising, Peet said: “We need to have a good talk about tonight, we need to learn a lot. We’ll have a catch up with the lads tomorrow, we’ll have some good discussions and learning points. We’ve got to learn some lessons because some of the things we did tonight were below par.” The post Peet: No excuses appeared first on Wigan Warriors Blog. View the full article
  2. Match Report as Wigan fall short against Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium.Sam Halsall scored a brace, with Matty Nicholson also grabbing a double on debut.FT | Huddersfield Giants 32-22 Wigan Warriors. Sam Halsall and Matty Nicholson both crossed for a brace of tries each but the spirited performance on the road wasn’t enough to take the two points away from Huddersfield. Huddersfield got into a two score lead with tries from Louis Senior and Ricky Leutele but Matt Peet’s men responded well as Sam Halsall went over for his first score of 2022 to reduce the deficit to 12-6 at the break. A spirited response from Wigan saw Halsall go over for a second as Matty Nicholson added a double on his debut, but it wasn’t enough for the Warriors to take the two points on the road in Huddersfield. Report Logan Astley made his first team debut at half back whilst Matty Nicholson featured off the interchange bench for his senior debut. Abbas Miski and Willie Isa returned to the starting line-up as James McDonnell also featured on his return from loan with Leigh Centurions. Huddersfield opened the scoring in the 6th minute as the Giants created an overlap on the left edge to see Louis Senior over for the try. The conversion from Russell on the touchline was on target to give the hosts an early 6-0 lead. Senior thought he was in again in the 10th minute with a similar overlap move but good cover from Bevan French saw the full back force him into touch and deny Giants the score. Wigan’s best chance then came from Sam Halsall, the winger raced through a gap to get Wigan deep into the Huddersfield half before looping a ball over the top to Bevan French. The full back attempts a chip over the top but is stopped in his tracks and Joe Greenwood was sent to the sin bin. Huddersfield extended their lead in the 26th minute, after working into Wigan territory, Ricky Leutele powered his way over the line, converted by Oliver Russell to make it 12-0. Wigan responded almost immediately though, as Iain Thornley made a break to get the ball away to Bevan French, the full back was stopped but not before he could get the pass away to Halsall to score, the effort was converted by Smith for 12-6. It was the hosts who were next to score, as they made an instant impact from the restart. Working deep into Wigan territory, a looping pass out to Louis Senior on the left wing got reward again, with the touchline conversion from Russell on target for 18-6. Huddersfield extended the lead in the 53rd minute, after earning a penalty and getting closer to the Wigan goal line, Wardle collected a pass on the right edge to put the ball down, as Jake Bibby forced his man over the touchline. After a check from the video referee, Wardle was awarded the try and the Giants had a 22-6 advantage. Wigan had a response just after the hour mark, a fired out pass saw Thornley get quick hands away to Sam Halsall who raced through and cut inside to score, the conversion attempt from out wide from Smith was wide and it was 22-10 going into the final quarter. Wigan were in again almost immediately, a kick over the top bounces kindly for Abbas Miski who has Matty Nicholson in support for the forward to score on his debut. Harry Smith slotted over the extras and Wigan were back within a score at 22-16. Huddersfield were in again going into the final 10 minutes, a kick through from Fages was collected by Sam Hewitt to glide over and put the scores at 26-16. Matty Nicholson was in again for a double on his debut though, as Wigan piled on some pressure late on, the effort was converted by Harry Smith for 26-22. The Giants grabbed a late effort as Louis Senior managed to stay in the whitewash to complete his hat-trick, converted by Russell to see the hosts to a 32-22 victory. 5. Wigan Warriors Community Foundation recently hosted their latest emerging schools festival.15 High schools across Wigan and Chorley were involved with over 300 young people attending.Keep an eye out on our website and social media pages for further festivals in 2022. Over 300 young people attended our latest Emerging Schools Festival hosted by Wigan Warriors Community Foundation. 15 High schools across Wigan and Chorley were involved in the festival, with games for both boys and girls ranging from school years 7 to year 10. The festival, which showcases playing opportunities for all abilities from local schools saw over 200 boys take to the field as well as over 90 girls, in a big increase in the girls’ game. Gallery: Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Photo: Lewis Murdock Community Coach, Tom Marsh, said: “It was great to see so many boys and girls involved playing Rugby League. The main idea of the emerging schools’ festivals are to get boys and girls who might not play for a Community Club playing for schools, so to see around 300 boys and girls from Wigan and Chorley playing is amazing. We are looking to get many more set up throughout May, June and July.” John Whalley, Women & Girl’s development officer added: “It is great to see the number of girls in Rugby League increasing and to have these emerging girls’ festivals each term going forward to increase participation. These players may not play out of school and it gives them an opportunity to enjoy Rugby League and make new friends. With schools from Wigan and surrounding areas all participating it’s great to see, I am looking forward to more festivals on the run up to summer.” For more information on emerging schools festivals, and other events from our Community Foundation, please contact community@wiganwarriors.com. 6. The Sportsman will kick off their coverage of the 2022 Betfred Women’s Super League this Sunday by bringing you St Helens vs Wigan Warriors, live and exclusive on their dedicated Rugby League Youtube Channel, alongside a brand new monthly Women’s Rugby League show. St Helens won an unprecedented treble in 2021, and retained the first of their three titles on Saturday, lifting the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup in front of a record crowd at Elland Road. This weekend, they face arch-rivals Wigan, at their Totally Wicked Stadium home; kick off 2pm. St Helens Captain Jodie Cunningham is hoping for another strong start to their league campaign on Sunday: “We’ve defended one of our trophies now, and we can fully focus on the Women’s Super League. Hopefully we can back it up again, no-one might want us to win the treble, but we’re going to do everything we can.” Wigan Warriors last lifted the Betfred Women’s Super League trophy in 2018, and Winger Georgia Wilson knows there would be no better way to being a tilt for the title in 2022 than by beating the Champions on their own patch: “There’s going to be a lot of feisty-ness, the players that have been at Wigan for a long time understand what this big derby is all about. There’s a few new girls in, so we’ve got to drill that into them this week in training; what it means to be playing for Wigan in this derby. We’re going to get on that patch and play for the badge.” The Sportsman will be live streaming games throughout the Betfred Women’s Super League season, and will also bringing you all of the big news and insight from across the league in our brand new, monthly, Women’s Rugby League Show. Episode one, hosted by Christy McAllister and available to watch from 6pm on Thursday, features St Helens, Wigan Warriors, York City Knights and Leeds Rhinos as they preview the start of the season, and build up to this weekend’s action. 8. Iain Thornley spoke to Wigan TV this week ahead of the Warriors game against Huddersfield Giants.Thornley: “I played a lot of my career at centre so that is probably somewhere I do prefer playing but I’ve got to cover different positions and that’s what we like in our team, how versatile players can be.”Watch the full interview on Wigan TV HERE. Iain Thornley said his main focus is to carry on going after overcoming two injuries early in the season to settle his spot at Centre for Wigan. “It wasn’t going my way at the beginning of the year,” he said, “I had that syndesmosis injury that put me out for 8 weeks and then literally a week later I ended up with a ligament injury in my shoulder that set me back for another two weeks. I thought someone really doesn’t want me to play Rugby here but the Club have been brilliant, really looked after me and got me better and I’m thankful to be back on the pitch. I just want to put my best foot forward now and do as best as I can on the field to repay that.” Now back on the pitch, Thornley has had a string of games under his belt: “Everything has gone good so far, ticked a few games off now since having that injury. It’s just unfortunate and how things go sometimes, it’s not the start of the season that I wanted but I’m just thankful that I’ve got through a few games now, a big game at the weekend and everything has held up alright, it’s just about carrying on going now.” Love it, @IainThornley1! #WWRL #ChallengeCup pic.twitter.com/BOjl2oxbEH — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 7, 2022 The Warriors head on the road to face Huddersfield Giants on Thursday evening, with a selection of youth named in the 21-player squad. Speaking on the changes, Thornley said: “Matty always says that he wouldn’t put anyone out there that he doesn’t feel can do the job so it’s good, there’s some young lads getting an opportunity to get a couple of games under their belts, potentials for debuts so it’s great to see and it’s great for the Club. Those young lads getting the experience, or making their debut and getting a taste of Super League. “There’s still a a lot of senior boys who have played a lot of games around them, we’ve had some good training sessions this week and the younger lads didn’t look out of place and that is what Matty and the Coaching staff want. No matter who comes in, in what position, they know their roles from pre-season. There might be some nerves, so we can give them that bit of encouragement but once that game kicks off I think they’ll be fine.” The Giants will also be Wigan’s opponents in the Challenge Cup Final in two weeks’ time. Quizzed on whether Wigan can take anything away from Huddersfield’s game pay this week, the centre added: “There’s a few changes of personnel for both teams but a lot of the structures and the plays that you’ll see on Thursday will probably give you a jist of what each others teams do and that’ll probably not be far off what to expect in the final.” Read our full match preview ahead of Thursday’s game against Huddersfield Giants, which includes all the vital stats, pre-match build up and ticket information HERE. 11. Matt Peet offered his pre-match thoughts as Wigan prepare to face Huddersfield on Thursday evening.Peet: “I think we’ve got to be professional, there’s people playing for places but there’s two points at stake and I’m hoping that we want to set some standards as a Club.”Huddersfield Giants v Wigan Warriors, Thursday 12th May, 8pm K.O. Matt Peet says the Warriors are ‘focused on themselves’ as they gear up for an away fixture against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday evening. “We very much focus on ourselves, we aren’t a team who alter much on opposition to opposition but I do know that Ian Watson is a smart coach, his teams line-up tactically and they’ll be well prepared so we’d be foolish to read too much into what they do,” Peet said. The Warriors and the Giants both booked their places in the Challenge Cup Final on Saturday, where they will meet in three weeks time. On the back of the Semi Final win, Peet said: “We took time to acknowledge what we have achieved. We reflected on what we did well in the game, it’s important to recognise what we did well and what we’ve learnt over the past month and also some areas where we need to be better, particularly after conceding tries. It was important to let the lads enjoy it for a day, and we did that but attention quickly focuses on the next game.” 𝙉𝙀𝙓𝙏 𝙈𝘼𝙏𝘾𝙃 @Giantsrl @SuperLeague Round 12 John Smith’s Stadium Thursday 12th May 8pm K.O. #⃣ #SLHUDWIG Tickets are available in-Store at Robin Park Arena!#WWRL pic.twitter.com/PDpP1ubYS4 — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 9, 2022 On this weeks game, he added: “I think it’s an important league game in it’s own right if you look at where the two teams are. It’s another week where we’ll be looking for improvements, we look to improve as a group but there’s a lot of individuals in there as well that know that they need to improve certain elements of their game and that’s why they’re in.” Matt Peet has named a more youthful 21-player squad ahead of Thursday. On his decision to rotate his squad, he said: “We’ve had a few lads who have played a lot from the start of the season, you look at the minutes and the meters that they have covered, we’ve delved into that and made some comparisons for our squad. There’s also some lads who have been not training and just turning up for games and the turnaround is just a little bit too short so it’s the perfect opportunity to freshen up but we’re still looking for a top performance. “I think we’ve got to be professional, there’s people playing for places but there’s two points at stake and I’m hoping that we want to set some standards as a Club.” Summarising ahead of the fixture, the Warriors Head Coach added: “I think execution is going to be important, the team that wins the energy battle, as well as getting the combinations flowing will probably be on top. 16. Wigan Warriors Academy beat London Broncos Academy on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors scored 12 tries on the afternoon, with Ratchford converting eight.FT | Wigan Warriors 64-6 London Broncos. Wigan Warriors Academy put on a twelve try display at home to London Broncos on Saturday to get their fourth win of the year. It was a quick start for Wigan who were eager to keep the ball alive against the Broncos back line. A six again call just 10m away from the London goal line saw them in good position,a good drive from Harvie Hill got them just short before sending Junior Nsemba over for the opening score in the 2nd minute, converted for 6-0. Wigan extended their lead in the 9th minute as Jacob Douglas sold his defender short with a nice dummy to dart through and gap and get the score for 10-0. In the blink of an eye Wigan extended their lead from the kick off, making some easy meters before sending Nsemba on his way from the half way line, he got the pass inside to Smithers who gave the return to Nsemba to cruise under the uprights and make it 16-0 with a converted score from Ratchford. Nsemba completed a first half hat-trick as Wigan steamed up the pitch just short of half time. A looping pass to the wing saw Povall collect before cutting the pass inside for Nsemba to crash over and it was 20-0. On the stroke of half time, Beardsworth burst through the defensive line and raced half the length of the field to make it 26-0 going into the sheds. The one way traffic continued into the second half, a scrum in Wigan’s favour close to the uprights allowed the Warriors to build pressure and Harvey Wilson added a nice solo effort as he glided through for a score, converted to give Wigan a 32-0 lead. Moments later Harry Smithers added his name to the scoresheet as he evaded a defender on the left wing to run away and extend the lead further to 38-0. Maddox Jeffrey then went in for a quick fire brace, the first effort coming on the left wing as he timed his run right to score in the corner before a second effort saw him cut inside from the left to leave defenders on the floor and score closer to the sticks and one of the two efforts was converted for 48-0 with 20 minutes to play. With plenty of joy from the back of the scrum following Broncos errors so far, Wigan got their reward from a head and feed once more in the 62nd minute as Harvie Hill bulldozed onto a ball to ease under the uprights for a converted score. Shifting the ball with speed from left to right allowed the Warriors to send Reagan Sumner racing in at the right hand corner for 58-0. London Broncos managed to get a consolation try in the 72nd minute as a clever dart from dummy half by Jenson Binks allowed them over, the effort was converted. Wigan finished off the proceedings though as they responded with a try from Joe Baldwin just before the full time hooter, the loose forward skipping a tackle before placing the ball down to confirm a deserved 64-6 win at Robin Park Arena. 23. Liam Marshall said he was ‘ecstatic’ after scoring the winning try to send Wigan to the Betfred Challenge Cup Final.Marshall: “A lot of mental toughness was shown today, the lads were outstanding – every single one of them.”Get your ticket for the Betfred Challenge Cup Final. All the information can be found HERE. Liam Marshall spoke to Wigan TV after scoring a double against St Helens to confirm a Betfred Challenge Cup Final appearance for Wigan Warriors. At full time, he said: “I was shouting and screaming in that game and singing at the end. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, we didn’t make it easy, we clocked off a bit at the beginning of the second half and let them roll back in. It was very tough but the ball bounced up for me and I managed to get the breakaway try and I felt I needed to give the team one back for a dropped ball earlier. “I’m just ecstatic to get that result, they’re a quality side but we’re through to the final.” We’re going to Spurs! #WWRL #ChallengeCup pic.twitter.com/FbhmglLm7i — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 7, 2022 With a 14-0 lead at half time, the game swung into St Helens hands with three quick tries after the restart. Speaking on that period of the game, Marshall said: “We were in a good position but it’s strange, you speak about them coming at you in the second half and that’s something you need to be switched on for, we couldn’t have spoken enough about that but it didn’t go that way. They got some momentum, scored some tries and they were in front. I think we showed some mental toughness, which we haven’t had in the past, to get back in the game and we’re ecstatic with the result and it’ll go a long way that win.” He added: “It’s about going back to basics, completing your sets and defending well. It felt like it was snowballing at one point, we kicked off they were rolling up the field and we gave penalties away to put them on the front foot. Luckily enough we managed to break that with the try and a lot of mental toughness was shown today, the lads were outstanding– every single one of them.” Pace @LiamMarshall20 #WWRL #ChallengeCup pic.twitter.com/7sPi7pJZOR — Wigan Warriors (@WiganWarriorsRL) May 8, 2022 It was Marshall who got the winning try on the afternoon, picking up a loose ball to race away. On the effort, he said: “I was just hoping my little legs would get me there. They were on the front and they had us done for numbers until the pass went to ground and luckily bounced up for me, a bit of an opportunist try but I was thinking in my head ‘please don’t get caught’ but the winning try which is great.” See the full interview with Liam Marshall, as well as Match highlights on Wigan TV HERE.
