The 4 NRL games at the weekend again show what talent will be coming to these shores for the world cup,I've said before it's a shame that a large percentage of our population aren't aware of the level that the game is in Australia, looking forward to seeing Coates, Olam and Alex Johnston playing for PNG

That's my favourite weekend of the year for the NRL.  4 absolutely top quality games.

What I find amazing is the intensity that all the games were played at... even the one's where the losers got a second chance.

The only positive for England at the World Cup is that the talent is spread across so many international teams these days.

Look at the pack from the team of the week from NRL.com

    8. James Fisher-Harris

    9. Blake Brailey

    10. Joseph Tapine

    11. Isaiah Papali'i

    12. Learn Koloamatangi

    13. Jason Taumalolo

All bar the 9 are from teams other than Australia.  It really is going to be so competitive.

Yeah,by illegally knocking the games best player out of the game,I’d expect a front rower to make metres if he only plays 24 mins in 2 spells against a tiring opposition front row,the only problem is unlike the Roosters Aust/NZ/Tonga/Samoa will have better more physical options coming off the bench,I have my doubts whether he’ll be that effective when he comes on against those same fresh players, time will tell I suppose & he has a few weeks to rest & prepare now.

I am not referring to the high shot on Tedesco.  I have already stated it was a bad shot and deserves a ban.

I am referring to his contribution to the team in (one) 24 minute stint in which he helped to shift the momentum of the match by running for 98 metres and 46 post contact metres in just 24 minutes.

That was his job as an interchange middle forward and that is what he did.  I am sure that he would have contributed more if he hadn't also had to leave the field for a failed HIA as a result of foul play.

I do agree with this - I think you'd possibly start Walmsley/Oledki and interchange with Burgess/Thompson

I think Oledzki has to start.  His defense is by far the best of these four and you need to have that mobility at the start of big matches.

Colossal is stretching it a bit David, yesterday he got knocked backwards which resulted in a couple of poor high shots, the first one would have been a red card earlier in the season, when he came back on after his enforced”rest” he benefited from Lodge & JWH coming to the end of their spells.

Looking towards the WC you’d think Wane will start with only 1 of Burgess/Walmsley & interchange with each other in 20 min spells.

Burgess took a couple of bigs shots when he came on.

One of the key measures of a middle forward is post contact metres.  Burgess was on the pitch for 24 minutes and made 46 post contact metres.  Waerea-Hargreaves was on the pitch for 46 minutes and made 56 post contact metres.

Burgess helped to change the momentum of that game.

He’s been in colossal form . I’m expecting a big World Cup from him . The Roosters can be justifiably peeved over the Tedesco incident I think and that they couldn’t use the 18th man . That was a huge moment

    I agree.

Did you see the post match press conference with Trent Robinson. Despite seeing his team go out he said that Klein managed the game well and it was the players from both teams that escalated the game and the incidents.

He is such a classy guy... most coaches will be reaching for these incidents as excuses (and overlooking their own) but he was honest about how the game unfolded.

  6. Very eventful 24 minutes on the pitch for Burgess against the Roosters.

The high shot on Tedesco was a poor one and deserves a ban but other than that I thought he was superb.

The Rabbitohs were getting absolutely smashed up front before he came on.  When he got on the pitch the Roosters pack tried to put two big shots on him but to no effect and in that 24 minutes he ran for 98 metres and 46 post contact metres - helping to turn the tables on the Roosters physically.  Including literally walking straight through Angus Crichton.

The worst thing is nobody could really say why we have changed these rules, there is no obvious benefit at all. Most rule changes just move a problem around rather than resolve anything.

The play the ball replacing the scrum when the ball goes in touch is an awful law.  It is supposed to speed up the game but all it does is create a situation where the defence is fully set as the ref demands a fully controlled restart.

Indeed . One thing i didnt like was the headslam . Whatever the discussion on toe to toe and high contact in tackles that is just a grub act

I thought Waerea-Hargreaves was lucky to l have the first one called as accidental as well.

See this is where i think rules nowadays being so restrictive doesnt help . Whether you should say it or not . Things simmer and simmer and there’s no real release valve . Theyd be better off having an all in brawl , sorting out who you have a beef and if you think your tough proving it , then getting on with it .

I'm with you there. Tempers build up... especially when players know that they can rub heads or grab shirt fronts knowing that they won't get whacked or if they did the opposition is off with a red.

Can you imagine someone rubbing Mal Reilly's head or grabing his shirt and in his face.  He would be leaving on a stretcher.

I loved it tbh . I watched two guys it origin have a punch up and stay on so I don’t know what rules are in big games. I like my big game rugby like that

In that regard, I preferred Origin... I thought the game today was tough and enjoyable enough but it was too niggly with players staying down for the video ref to award penalties again and trying to wind each other up (face rubs, head slams etc.) and shouting at the ref too much as well.

It was all a bit too stroppy to be old school for me.

Honestly I didn’t think either were sinbins . In a big semi final between two rivals who hate each other I thought the officiating in a lot of it was a massive over reaction .

I disagree with this one.  Any type of punch or running in these these days is a sin bin.  Everyone knows that and it is the same for the semi's.

As for the officiating.   He sent 7 to the bin and the players were still trying to whack each other and try it on. If he hadn't been as strict it could have been mayhem.

    That's fair.

I was meaning specifically the women. It's very like women's cricket: Australia went first with proper professionalism (however imperfect) whereas the rest of the world was paying lip service to it. It'll be years before that gap closes if it ever does.

With the men: we're both not that far off in that we always have the potential to run them close (sometimes agonisingly so) but also miles behind because we simply do not have the depth to do that on a regular and guaranteed basis.

This is all true.  My heart says our Women can do it but I watch most of the NRLW games and the quality is excellent.

Although they play 35 minute halves and we play 40 so maybe we can run them down in the last 5 when they are knackered.

  13. I have described the situation between the Women's game in the UK and Australia as similar to the men's internationals in the 90's.  The game over there is much stronger but we have some high quality players and hopefully we can get a competitive team on the park.

Of course, that can also be said about the men's game in 2022.

The cap now includes two marquee players for clubs with money. Plus a few ways to not count players full wages on the cap that didn’t exist on the original cap. So for some clubs I doubt it’s far off moving with inflation.

Agreed. There are ways for clubs to spend more on star players.  In fact with the marquee rule, they could spend far more if they had the wherewithal.

The fact that ubs don't implies that they don't have the money.

There is a chicken and egg conversation with the cap.  Soke would argue individuals don't invest in Rugby League because you can't buy success while others will point to the marquee rule and suggest it was there if needed.

I would be happy to raise the cap but it is 100% going to be beneficial for the clubs that are already making the finals every year.

Likewise if you were allowed to spend more, Leeds and Wigan etc would have to because they would compete with eachother.

I would be ok with that.  I would be very happy with Leeds, Saints & Wigan (and other well managed clubs) spending more on their squads - bringing star players from Australia, maybe even a cross code player or two.

But this isn't allowing the others to climb up as you say, it will take the top teams further away.

But after two decades of a stupidly low salary cap not having the desired effect I would be happy to see some injection at the top end.

I'm quite new to watching Rugby League and a bit unsure on some of the laws, when the ball is kicked to touch during general play how does it restart, is it a scrum or play the ball, can someone explain what happens when it's kicked out on that full, when it bounces in the field before going out into touch, and also how play is restarted if it's kicked on the 5th tackle. Also how is play restarted when a player is tackled into touch?

Hope that all makes sense. Thanks.

    As far as I know.

Unless it is a 40-20 or 20-40 kick, if a ball is kicked and bounces into touch it is a lateral handover and the team who didn't kick can choose to have it on the 10m, 20m or the middle of the field.

If the ball is kicked out on the full over the sideline it is a handover from the point the ball was kicked.  A ball kicked out on the full over the dead ball line will be a 20m restart with a zero tackle.

All of the above are the same whatever tackle the ball is kicked on.

I believe that if a player is legitimately tackled into touch this also results in a lateral handover (although it may be 20m in from the touchline where the tackle occurred on that one).

That is because the cap is so low. If you're being paid peanuts, you may as well be winning. That of course applies to academy level players too. Even if a club does pay enough to tempt a player away from the top sides, then that compromises their spending in other aspects.

Alongside a general raising of the cap to keep up with the times, there are a number of things the sport could look at that have been tried and utilised in other sports too. Essentially you give lower achieving organisations structural, if not sporting, advantages. 1st draft picks, more wind tunnel testing time, a temporarily increased cap are examples of these. Some are pretty extreme, but they are designed to break pretty ingrained failure circuit loops.

I would be delighted to see the cap raised and I have stated a few times that even if the cap had just kept place with inflation the £1.8M salary cap in 2002 would be at least £2.8M today and not £2.1M.

But let's not kid ourselves.  Increasing the cap today would just increase the gap between the best teams in the league and the rest.  The best run clubs are also the best teams and these would be the one's spending more... extending the gap not reducing it.

All teams have access to two marquee spots.  Where are the big name signings that these two spots offer.  We could literally offer Tom Trbojevic, Latrell Mitchell or James Tedesco as much money as they wanted and no-one is bringing them over.

It's all well ad good providing these exceptions but no-one is taking advantage of them.

Yeah I agree, I’m sure he’ll start to mature as he gets older though. I’ve met him a few times and he is a top bloke and he’s only trying to protect his mates.

Agreed. I love the way he plays but I am sure he will look back on those two and realise he didn't need to do either.
