The same RFL that's giving away grand final tickets at half price?

You think they know how any of this works or what to do about it?

I don’t think they would have given it a thought whilst wooing potential USA partners and planning how to use 600m aus dollars in PNG.

A decent series with high attendances and a decent event buzz certainly would have.

    We did none of that.

This situation is entirely on English rugby league.

It isn’t.  This situation has been coming for several years and I’d be amazed if it wasn’t in the RFLs risk planning.

Thinking about it, maybe I aren’t surprised.

We've not built an international space independent of Australia that is resilient enough to be attractive - either here in the NH or in the SH.

I think it’s more that the NRL has the influence over nations dependant on them as well as a toothless quango that is the IRL federation, rather than our efforts.

Is this just French players who play in the French comp? If not you've missed a couple playing in the UK.

FWIW, it's not a lack of players that lets France down, though they are clearly weaker than most, it's the coaching set up. Other than at Catalan, it appears to be almost non existent. Also, and I may be wrong here, but from a neutrals perspective, French players, especially those at Catalan don't seem to see playing for France as much of an honour - don't think I've seen what I would call a full strength French team in years.

How can the French coaching set up be none existent with Toulouse Olympique and the Elite Competitions going on?

This makes no sense. He's a middle, play him from the bench... he still has to play in the middle.

Giving 100% should not be the reason people are picked.

Yes, i agree - I should’ve rephrased ‘pack’ to middle.

It makes sense as you cannot have superstars all over the team.  He chases down, put his body on the line, gives everything right up to interchange and seems totally committed.  That is, to me, giving 100%.

    Shambolic.

I am in France and don’t use a vpn so didn’t watch live but what hit me was that the NRL were showing the tries on video, minutes after been scored.  Match stats given after the results published and now full video’s available of the series.

Sure, we can get some of that on iPlayer but that discounts fans and clicks worldwide.

That 17k vs NZ in 2018 was hugely disappointing, I can remember the ire on here at the time. In that series, 26k attended Anfield (also considered somewhat disappointing) and 32k attended at Elland Road.

In 2016, 5k turned out in Hull for the 4 nations game of Australia vs Scotland

At last year's World Cup, Hull also got the lowest attendance of all quarter finals - just 7k for the NZ vs Fiji match which was closely contested. More people turned out at Huddersfield for Australia's stroll against Lebanon

I think the questions that should be asked/should’ve been asked were around the 24k that attended in 2013 and 2014 that then dropped to 17.5k v NZ in 2018.  The same questions might have been relevant to the last WC here also where we got 18.5k at Sheffield against the 7k at Hull for the Jamaica game.

I don’t agree with cutting Hull out.  Two clubs bringing 18000 in regularly together shouldn’t be ignored but the reasons why, records/findings from wash up meetings considered, promotions successes etc etc should absolutely be.  How does 24k get to 7k?  How have we allowed that to happen?

There should be the expertise within the RFL and SL to nail these attendances.  Sales driven strategy, incentivised people, promotion packages for hosting clubs, working with local industries and nationals….imo.
As you know I’m not in sales or marketing but big drops in attendances seem to be taken quite lightly.

The game stats are also on Fox.com.au

    https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/test-matches/match-centre/RLI20230203

The problem is that the stats differ wildly between the two sites.

As an example, Harry Smith is listed as running for 72 run metres on NRL.com and 18 metres on Fox.

I mean these are so far apart that it makes it look like they were different games.

The NRL are using the same format as they consistently do in all their match reports but the Fox one seems different.

NRL are now showing full match replays of the series too.  RFL and Superleague not showing anything.

There was so much potential with Jamaica with the large Jamaican and Caribbean diaspora in England, but as usual, it was completely wasted.

I can understand Leeds, for the Jamaican games but I would have thought having another nearer Birmingham would’ve seen a larger attendance at the time.

Amazingly, England v Greece brought 18760 at Bramall Lane.

The last international at Hull was New Zealand v Jamaica at the last WC with about 7,000 there.

    Stand corrected mate

edit:  seems Jamaica didn’t get many species through the gate but the NZ game brought the most, so based on other stadiums:

    Attendance: 6,320, at Headingley, Leeds.

Attendance: 6,829 at MKM Stadium, Hull.

Attendance: 5,006 at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh.

Hull has consistently fared poorly for internationals and shouldn’t be considered.

For Samoa, I’d go with Leeds, Wigan and London/Newcastle. Anything other than a major London stadium doesn’t make sense though as it won’t be appealing enough to attract the event/casual crowd

Eh?  It’s been some time since an international at Hull but the last had 17500 in 2018 and before that 24/25k.

Should we be ruling out Saints and Hudds before Hull?

imo the biggest cause of low crowds is lack of planning and RFL effort.  Not sure who is responsible but their roles can be commission/bonus related.

Great picture mate, no wonder V`landys said he was pinching himself, I don`t think I`ve ever seen a picture where he is the one actually doing the listening, he looks a little starstruck to me, like Biden or not (and I like him) that`s in the presence of real power.

    Indeed.

I struggle to think of anyone within the English game capable of pulling that off or even thinking of reasons to do it.

I have absolutely no idea what the deal and limitations are for BBC highlights compared to the (no doubt much better funded and staffed) Australian TV setup.

Me neither.  The AFL also have the highlights up.

edit: finally up on the RFL site.  Probably been for fish and chips after the game before uploading it.

  14. Don’t know if anyone’s interested in military history but I’ve just finished A Woman of No Importance.  Story of a woman who became a spy for the allies in France during WW2.

Ive read tonnes of these type of books and the bravery of those involved beggars belief but the story of Virginia Hall, her bravery, determination etc just blew me away.  In my top three books and I would recommend.

Limoux game called off, bit of a strange one, I hope it really is the heavy rainfall and not the fact they've lots of injuries and it's a good excuse!😁 Carcassonne game is still on as is the Lézignan game,

When is Lezignan away to VSL?
