To try and get back on topic, I think its safe to assume that energy prices rises in particular and inflation in general will exceed wage rises over the next year.

So almost everyone will have less disposable income than before, but the question is will this effect rugby league more or less than other sports?

Do our fans have less disposable income to start with than the average sports fan, so rugby will quickly become something to cut back on? Or will it be a long way down the list? Will our fans disproportionately cut back on Sky subscriptions or will TV become even more needed by people.

The received wisdoms are that our fans - older and poorer on average than the median sports fan - will feel the pinch first.

But perhaps it won't be like that - pensions will rise more than wages and the local nature of the sport means travel costs are often lower.

My guess: away fans fall, home fans hold up pretty well, and TV viewership goes UP like it did in the pandemic.

Speaking only for myself and kids, we'll prioritise Rugby over other leisure activity. It keeps us sane. If (and it's a big if) it gets as bad as the doom merchants predict, we might drink less ale and eat less pies. I'm sure my belt will thank me.

Yes, exactly, a Marion sin bin for eff all which turned the match. Another "what's the point trying when this happens".

Still, plenty of people quite happy to see the back of them. Let's hope they are back to poke the M62 tiger.

They'll be back. It was always a long shot going up and staying up first time.

Losing Ford and MK on the eve of the season can't have helped and I don't think they recruited very well pre season.

    They'll learn from the experience.

I'm looking forward to visiting next year.

But no one had moaned before your initial post, which was only the 4th and a post in which you immediately decided to moan about the crisis being overblown.

My definition of a moan and yours must differ 😚 We've had a similar thread recently where there was mucho moaning.

    That is a fair post.

I have this conversation with my wife a lot

She is a lovey and generous woman but she gets very frustrated with people who take handouts while doing @##% all. Not least because she does actually work hard.

My view is that I am happy to live in a society where some people can take advantage of social welfare because it means that this welfare is there for people who genuinely need it.

But we are seeing a bit of a perfect storm with the cost of living and, in particular, energy costs.  This is hitting a lot of people hard and I think some empathy for that is needed.

It's not that I don't have empathy for those unable to help themselves.

However, it's no use complaining at the price of gas when your house is 25 degrees throughout.  That is action that an individual can take to reduce their bill. If everyone reduces their consumption, the demand side of the Supply & Demand equation starts to come back into balance and we all benefit.

I'm not sure if this is your intention but you come across as an 'I'm OK so sod 'em' type on these threads.

That's your interpretation, which is fine.

I get irritated by the constant moaning. People really should take responsibility for their own lives. We've become a society that sits waiting for either instructions or hand outs from the government. That irritation probably comes through in threads.

I'm by no means a high earner and I'm not "OK so sod them", my wife is currently unable to work. I'm bang on Joe Average, but I'm not looking for someone else to solve my issues.

Looking around at modern body shapes and waist lines. There are a lot of people out there who seem to be following natures lead and laying down fat for the winter

Have you noticed that whenever there's a story about foodbank usage, it's always a lard mountain claiming they can't afford to eat?

Ive not had my cental heating on since may

My gas an electric is somehow still £200 a month

I can easily see it hitting £500.

You may think this all amusing but i dont, far from it.

    Its criminal

The criminality of capitalism and mugs just passively accepting it all.

Is that the same capitalism that gave you such a high standard of living in the first place?

No one has a right to waltz round their houses in shorts during December, but we can all do it because our living standard has reached dizzying heights because of that evil capitalism.

Reduce your demand if you can't afford it, it won't be nice but you'll survive. I'm prepared, I've bought wood while it's cheap in the summer and I'll not be sitting in shorts this winter.

This really is the ultimate first world problem.

Totally overblown by a media only interested in negatives. We have become soft with central heating etc and tech ruined conversation. Have no more than 1 telly on and use tech for work only, come the spring we will have a better society.

My kids are mortified that I'm putting their board up. It's either that or their tech and tellies get removed.

Wait until they hear that the only heating they're allowed is the wood burner in the lounge.

Stolen this from a football forum, but could we see more games kicking off earlier especially earlier in the season?

The cost of putting floodlights on is going to rise so if games kicked off earlier it could be a fairly substantial saving on running costs for clubs.

Makes sense. Not sure Sky will be willing to alter their games though (and why should they?).

Still think the coming "crisis" is being overblown, but there's no doubt gas and leccy are more expensive. Everyone should be finding ways of reducing usage.

Havant had a chance to post on this match until now.

Well done Toulouse on just under 10000 was an excellent night considering the day it was played and kick off time (Maybe 1000 Dragons fans made it tops) as for local derby Perpignan to Toulouse is around 17 miles more than Hull to Wigan:)

Seems to be a growing anti French campaign amongst some SL clubs which is nothing short of disgraceful and needs to be nipped in the bud ASAP.

    Paul

Don't think it's helpful to call it anti-French.

Many RL fans will see that this season, 1/6 of the money the sport has to spend going to two clubs that don't bring any real money to the table.  The wise (self appointed) sages of this forum were certain having TOXIII in the top flight would finally bring in French TV money and sponsorship. Where is it?

Having French teams is great and I love a French away trip, but after 15 years we are no closer to significant revenue from the French market and the French national team is still light years away from giving England a competitive game.

It should come as no surprise that French involvement is starting to be questioned.

    Seriously ? 😂

If you'd have set up and/or run a business where you are selling a product , be that chicken pies , Aston Martin cars or entertainment in shape of a RL game then yes ideally you want more money coming in than going out , but most likely no company can accurately predict exactly how many of those items they will sell over a twelve month period , they will estimate and hope it will be more

    That's how business works

I gave up trying to predict year ahead revenue a long time ago, it's far too random. Too many moving parts in my game, even the weather has a massive effect on trade.

At their great disadvantage. Take £500k off Wakey and see how they get on.

    True enough.

The bottom line is that we need to start generating revenue for the competition from the French market.

Our main financial backer and title sponsor are only interested in UK viewers. That being true, it’s reasonable for French teams to cover costs until we have French partners funding the competition.

and Leigh’s catering for away teams and officials costs £8m pa, who pays for that?

What’s Degsy serving? Wagyu filet mignon with truffles, caviar and edible gold flakes. Washed down with Dom Perignan. All served by waiters on the hourly rate that premiership footballers get?

  14. 13 minutes ago, Eddie said:

On your last point, TO already have to pay everyone to go over there (as we now know circa £0.5m a year, plus their own travel of presumably the same amount) so it’s no wonder they don’t enter the cup. A tie against Hunslet or whoever isn’t even going to cover their costs, far from it.

    Catalan manage it.

And yet no one is prepared to say that they would be happy with their own club in that situation.

Not really relevant. It was what it was.

I had no problem with the way the competition was structured last year. It was a result of the tyranny of the French and UK governments restricting the lives of their citizens. But to pretend it wasn't a massive helping hand to TOXIII's promotion campaign is bordering on delusional.

I know for a fact that Fev wanted to play the postponed fixture in Blagnac at the end of the season once our respective governments decided they could trust us to leave the country again.  TOXIII refused, make of that what you will.

Not participating in the cup doesn't sit well with me either and they opted out of that long before the Chinese started tinkering with viruses in a lab.

If those 33% of games were away games, or even a mix, then it is an advantage. As all home games then much less so. And as a club to lose that number of home games, to lose the income, the fans, sponsorship etc is definitely not an advantage.

Again, would you and your club be happy only playing away from home, with no fans, having flown to get there?

Give over, last year their players were fresh as daisies every time they turned up for a game.

It won't have been a massive financial drain. Don't forget that they were only getting about 1000 home fans playing at Blagnac.

How many new subscribers did Leigh bring when they was in Super League?

How many new fans did they bring to the club?

How many new subscribers will either Leigh or Fev bring to Super League in they are promoted?

How many new fans will either of these clubs bring to Super League?

Even if the number is 0, it's equal to the number that Catalan or TOXIII bring.

A quick perusal of Leigh's attendances would suggest it's about 3,000

At least as many as Catalan or TOXIII

Between 4,000 and 6,000, of whom about 1/3 will travel to away games.

I personally think Super League is a better competition for having Catalan and more recently TOXIII.  But the harsh commercial reality is that 15 years on from Catalan entering the competition, we are not generating any financial return on their participation. Nor is the French national team any closer to providing England with a competitive international game.

At some point we do need to question if having French teams in the competition is the right thing to do.

Surely the sensible way forward is

    1. for the RFL/SL to ring fence ‘x’ amount of SKY money for travel to France.  If any SL is that desperate for say £30k then they should be kicked out of SL.

But the cost can be dramatically reduced if -

    1.  The game can create a partnership with an Airline operator for free flights or reduced cost flights

    2.  SL guarantee that ALL regular season games in France are NOT subject to change of dates therefore IF a partnership with an Airline operator is secured then seats can be reserved/booked well in advance of the start of the season

    3.  if a partnership with an Airline operator is agreed then you could have a maximum of 26 people per club  - 18 players, 5/6 coaching staff plus 2/3 others - flying to France next season on just 13 occasions (potential play off games could also be part of an agreement).  That is an absolute minuscule amount of cost to an Airline operator for sponsoring an elite competition event.

    4. if the flight times of an agreed partnership mean one overnight stay then organise a partnership with a local hotel.  For one nights kip you don’t need the Ritz!

Is it really beyond the abilities of SL and Catalans to sort this out (why can’t I find an emoji that is saying feck me!

Not bad for a Cas lad Ian.

We've even got the perfect airline to approach, headquartered in Leeds and takes literally millions of northerners away on holiday every year. They fly to Girona, just like the majority of SL fans visiting Perpignan and they used to have a route from Manchester to Toulouse.
