I suppose that depends on what you class as heritage players, looks like there are 3 players out of the 18 who play for English amateur teams but they may have all been born in the Netherlands, there are 15 in the squad who play for Dutch teams but they could have all been born on the moon. As long as they are willing to give their all for the National team of their 'heritage' I cant see an issue.

Under 18 tours like this can only be a good thing for the future of the full national team so long may it continue

Wow. Someone always gets touchy when the word heritage gets mentioned.

And no, it does not depend on what I consider heritage, there are clear rules around this. The essence of which is quite simply: where did you learn to play RL? In the country itself or abroad? So a heritage player, for example, is not a product of the local Dutch RL system. Not rocket science.

This is a great first step, I hope we see more of them from now on!

How's about the European Rugby League actually look to do work in the said countries to develop the game. That's too much work obviously.

Not too much work, it is simply that they have no resource.  Here all they are doing is simply putting out a notice that may be able to connect people who may be interested in starting something.  For all we know, there could be a dozen people right now in Portugal wanting to do something, but never made a start because "I am only one person".  Something like this could help bring people like that together and join forces.  Or, nothing could come from it, at which point, we are back right where we are now, and have lost nothing.

I see nothing wrong with them doing this and should possibly do it more often.

With development in the Pacific being driven by the NRL, is it about time that SL takes responsibility for Europe. Could we have salary cap exemptions for Welsh, Scottish, Irish and French born players? IMG grading points for European born player numbers?

    Just a couple of suggestions.

Nothing more annoying than seeing "European" in a thread title, only for it to be about Wales, Ireland, Scotland.

the potential for RL in countries like Germany, the Netherlands and even the likes of Belgium are massive.

    Potential!  my favourite buzzword!

Do they still play RL in Belgium? There was a single team as far as I can recall, the Brussels Gorillas but I haven’t seen or heard anything about them for several years now.

No it was quite a brief existence, 2014-17 as I recall.  And they (Gorillas) played a season in the Dutch League, which would have been '15 or '16. But have not really done anything since then.

We need a regular well attended league with the A Team going out and playing the likes of the Ireland Wales A teams Netherlands Czech rep Serbia. 8 plus games a year so it gives an incentive to local players to look at RL as an alternative.

Agree with you on the Cumbria idea. And I almost agree with you on this. Except for one minor (major) detail. Why must it be Scotland A? Give these homegrown lads full international honours and their moment in the spotlight that they deserve. There is absolutely no shame in playing against those minnow nations you mention (and even possibly losing to some), the important thing is that it will kickstart some excitement back in Scotland. These players will no longer feel like they are the "background characters", but the main stars, and the momentum will build from there.

Case in point. Greece do this regularly and the game is steadily on the rise over there.

2019 they beat Serbia 82-6 as they had a majority heritage team. Now, in May 2023, they fielded an all-domestic team and lost to Serbia 40-6. They probably know full well that that would happen but there was no talk of "Greece A" or anything like that. It will was full international. It also attracted 1000+ spectators.

So my opinion is, keep treating them as 2nd class citizens and they will likely treat you the same way, and give priority to their local union team over their local RL team.

Ireland, I don't know too much about their domestic situation but a few years back they wanted to adjust their selection policy only for the English players and staff to throw a strop and the RLI backtracked.

They are known for announcing "tough" new quota policies, only to backflip on them right away. Here's an example:

I grow in worry that all 3 will slowly be frozen out of the international game due to the southern hemisphere dominance and England’s superiority.

The lack of internationals by those three is not the worrying part, their lack of domestic activity however, is.

Luke Keary wearing an Ireland shirt and Lachlan Coote for Scotland, just so we can tick some boxes, achieves nothing.

I'd say moving forward encouraging aspiring talents from developing European nations to try their luck in the Elite comps is probably the most available pathway at this stage, as has been done by a handful of Serbs, Greeks and Italians in recent times. Now Schoenmaker appears to be following in those footsteps.

Yes i fact I think I saw Joran made the Elite 1 team of the round last week too! Fantastic to see!

Pathways to professional/semi-professional games from Greece are at this stage relatively non-existent, this is made more difficult by the strict visa requirements for lower-league English competitions, France elite competitions are probably the best hope at this stage by acting as a satellite league for European developing nations (as we've seen already).

Worth noting that until the pandemic, Greece had 2 players playing in Elite 2 and one (Bastas) in Elite 1. He also had a stint at Doncaster.

Hopefully they can soon get back to the point where players start playing abroad. But yes, Brexit has definitely created a whole new set of obstacles, for anyone wanting to play in England.

It's a game against England Community Lions U18s, I believe.

That sounds like a good match up then, that should provide a fairly even contest.

I have no problem with Brazil promoting it as "England vs Brazil" to their home audience either.
