The truth is Yorkshire is inward looking in many ways which is good and bad whereas Lancashire’s two major cities have exploded onto the world stage really in reputation and importance over a number of measures. The sporting rivalry is really about regions within Lancashire eclipsing any need to be too concerned with what’s happening to Yorkshire. The genie is out the bottle and is difficult to put back. -

It’s great putting Yorkshire in its place. -
To be honest, Liverpool are happy there is some gap between themselves and Spurs right now. Results have been poor for a month and some shaky performances in that time. I think if Man City throw it away from here then I would be amazed. Edit: Whoever wins it will have earned it for sure.

My folks were on holiday in Milan not long after this and found some graffiti in quite a refined area of the city where amongst all the Italian daubing someone had written “Ipswich Town are ####”. Anyway back to RL.

The original made great telly when they reviewed the previous week’s date and the couple really didn’t get on. Obviously by today’s standards it would appear tame. But a bit of conflict tends to make for good drama. -

Big Mood (Channel 4, comedy) Tackles bipolar mood disorder head on with plenty of adult themes. Well written comedy that might divide the audience a bit. For me though it rings true and it’s less cartoony than I was expecting. -
Book thread: what are you reading?

Logical chess, Move by Move (1957) (Irving Chernev) The mother of all chess books aimed at beginners. He illustrates using 33 classical chess matches from the 1880s to 1945 from exotic places like Vienna, Buenos Aires and, erm, Weston-super-mare. The format is standard for a chess book except Chernev attempts to demystify the thought processes of the great players for the novice. He provides a detailed commentary around every single move, why it was made and what it later means. The idea of course is to set up a board and work through the games in the book to reinforce concepts and introduce new ideas in your chess. Doing this kind of training exercise can really help you improve just as coaching drills and physical prep can improve you in sport as well as just playing matches of rugby, football etc.
