  1. “Leeds’ highly-rated centre Harry Newman has pledged his future to the Rhinos after exploring options in Australia and rugby union.

The 21-year-old already had a year left on his current contract. But he has agreed a new three-year deal to keep him at Headingley until the end of 2024.”

It’s good to see such a promising young player staying with us.

  2. Whitehaven have announced they will be hosting a special Christmas lunch at the LEL Arena.

The event, which is free of charge, will be for those who would otherwise be lonely on Christmas Day. The invitation is extended to anybody who contacts the club via social media, or through the club office before 23rd December.

In a statement, the club said: “Christmas is a joyous time for most of us however for some it can be a time where they feel isolated.

“This year, Whitehaven RLFC are going to be putting on a Christmas lunch at the LEL Arena, free of charge, for anyone who wishes to spend a few hours in the company of others that are in a similar position of not having anyone to share the day with.

“We will be putting together a Christmas lunch for anyone who contacts the club, via its social media pages, club office or through another means possible by Thursday the 23rd of December.”

Well done Whitehaven, a great gesture!

Christ, Toppy in complete counsel of perfection “they don’t play for my team so they must be crucified” mode about Smith…

Since when did Will Pryce play for Saints, or Mikey Lewis for that matter, another young half back who i've praised several times on here ?

Take your pie tinted specs off and just accept Smith was p$%& poor most of last season, and of the all the young British half-backs coming through at the moment he's currently a long way down the list when it comes to consideration for an England squad place.

It’s true that Smith wasn’t good last season but he played behind a pack that was very rarely dominant and under a coach whose methods and team selection were strange to say the least. Let’s not write him off yet.

All of Wigan's signings might prove to be really astute pieces of business - only time will tell. But in terms of creating excitement for the new season, they're all extremely underwhelming. There hasn't been any signings yet with any wow factor to get fans excited and help get more bums on seats. It reminds me of that year they unveiled Shem Tatupu and Doc Murray as their 'big' signings.

I accept what you say about the wow factor but I don’t think anybody else could be that bad!

I’ve defended Cust as a good signing but Wigan fans worst fears have come true,Iain Thornley has officially signed, how anyone sees him as an answer to our problems at centre is beyond me,oh and Brazilian prop Ramon Silva signs from London, now that is shopping at Poundland.

In 2012 St.Helens signed Alex Walmsley, a 22 year old prop, with Championship but no Super League experience, from Batley. I think he’s done more than ok. I’m not saying Silva, who only has Academy experience, will turn out to be anything near as good but let’s hope that somebody in the know has spotted some real potential.

Serious "bargain basement" signing if they're expecting him to be their 1st choice half next year.

The kind of signing you would expect from a bottom 4 SL/top 4 Championship team. I think Wigan could really struggle this year.

Check out the Manly Facebook page; the comments there suggest otherwise.

Did Matt Peet play Rugby League at any level?

Did Kristian Woolf play rugby league at any level? He played for South’s Magpies in Brisbane between 1996 and 1997 but has been just a bit more successful as a coach than Kieran Cunningham who played nearly 500 games for St.Helens. Great players don’t always make great coaches and sometimes the best coaches never played the game at the top level. Will Matt Peet turn out to be a great coach? Only time will tell.

Wigan look to be coming into form at the right time. Great defence today. Despite a poor run they are still 4th and likely to avoid St Helens in the play offs until the final?

This Wigan performance wasn’t great but was much better than of late so credit where credit is due. Wigan took what few chances they had and their defence was excellent. It’s a pity that the Sky crew seemed to place more emphasis on a poor Castleford display rather than an improved one by Wigan.

Oh dear , Wigan fans sulking because they aren't winning everything like they used to , or diddums , what a shame 😉

It’s nothing to do with Wigan not winning every game or every trophy, more about a top club which traditionally has some of the best attendances being in decline.

Time for a clear out, starting with Lam & Radlinski.

Really feel for some of Wigan’s young forwards, they knocked their pans in last year getting us so close to a Grand Final win only to be let down by an abysmal lack of quality recruitment that has seen them having to try & do it all again and failing.

In my opinion Wigan should replace Lam immediately with O’Loughlin and Leuluai for the remainder of the season. It doesn’t make sense to carry on like this and although there aren’t many games left it might just kick-start an improvement.

  12. I must admit that I hadn’t thought about the possibility of, for example, a Wigan referee being a supporter of another club. Another twist to this is former referee Colin Morris who I believe was a Huddersfield society member but came from St.Helens. I don’t know if he ever refereed Huddersfield but was definitely in charge for several St.Helens games which, by the way, didn’t always result in a win for them.

Every single person on the planet is biased, albeit subconsciously, on any given issue. Why do we expect referees to be above this?

If that’s the case don’t have a Wigan or Huddersfield referee officiating at a Wigan or Huddersfield game and so on.

These types of appointments are nothing new. The rules changed many years ago. Definitely over 10 years ago.

I’m aware of that because, for example, Steve Ganson must have refereed St.Helens on several occasions. The point I’m trying to make is, why put referees in this situation? Hull KR we’re convincing winners last night with a 12 point margin but imagine the outcry had Wigan been in a position to win the game in the last minute and had done so by scoring a try from a forward pass not spotted by the WIGAN referee.

I disagree. We should stand on the principle that any such accusation is ludicrous.

I agree with you but human nature tends to take over as is shown by the criticism of referees on this forum. Had last night’s results been reversed we could have had accusations of bias.

  16. Last night’s game between Salford and Huddersfield was refereed by Chris Kendall of the Huddersfield Referee’s Society and the game between Hull KR and Wigan was refereed by Liam Moore of the Wigan Referee’s Society. I’m not suggesting that any referee is biased towards or against any team but surely for these games it would have made more sense for these appointments to have been reversed so as to avoid any such accusation.
