I think key Saints players can't do it any more. Never had Knowles or Warmsley down as quick but they seem to be even slower off then mark (not to mention offside every single time for them both)

Saints are in for an interesting couple of years IMO

All teams change their defence depending on the situation and where they are on the field. People have mentioned Wigans aggressive defence but there are plenty of times Wigan don't move up too and do a really lateral drift and just pick off the attacker when they try and go on the outside.

I think this thread is more to do with Leeds seemingly not even having this variety and being much more passive than the norm. I know some Leeds fans on here such as @Tommygilf where very critical of it this season.

Leeds’ defence was actually OK this year, which is why we had a positive point’s difference, the games against wigan and cats wiped that out but that wasn’t down to passive defence.

we were probably the dumbest team in the league which was a bigger problem and hopefully being sorted out

They seemed to ....have a look at rounds 2-9 for Leeds. Markers played as normal it was just there was no fast movement up of the line ....it was everyone at the same speed so must have been planned

Then seemed to be back to normal line speed after say round 10

Leeds won 5 out of those 8 fixtures including wins against Catalans and Saints.

Maybe they should have stuck with it 😉

Personally i like to see a bit of both, there are times when moving up as one and holding your line together is needed and other times aggressive defending is needed, I think a team like Saints have it too imbalanced, they seem to fly out every set.

You still reckon the ruck area is faster here in SL than in the NRL, I honestly do not recall the NRL teams putting 3/4 players in the tackle with the sole purpose of slowing the game down to such a degree.

The ruck here is way slower than the NRL, basically the olayers get out of the ruck when the tackle is called held, in SL theres limbs everywhere they don’t clear the ruck it’s a mess

I'm really surprised Matt Shaw has gone with that take as I thought he was pretty clued up. Every man and his dog (except seemingly Matt Shaw) knew that signing Brodie Croft to such a long term deal served only one real purpose, which was to give them a bit of leverage to request a decent transfer fee when he leaves. It's not a guarantee of a big fee, but it definitely makes it more likely.

Salford's financial issues and Brodie Croft's extended contract aren't really linked. If nobody came in with a transfer offer they'd allow him to leave for free if his contract was so unaffordable and there would be plenty of clubs willing to take him.

I get that he's saying Salford haven't been transparent about their financial difficulties and it's part of a broader point but it just seems odd that he's criticising them for something that actually seems quite sensible given their position.

It was blindingly obvious that his long term contract was a way of safeguarding their financial position so that when he left (which was inevitable) they got a decent fee for him. Matt Shaw is talking nonsense. Croft will have known this also.

Sam rolling back the years. The beauty of a semi final is that, however it pans out, if it’s close the tension ratchets up and up. A moment of genius and the south of France is in raptures.

I was reading the Guardian report, and they stated that Roby was Saints’ best ever player. He’s no Joe Egan, but each club has its own standards I suppose 😀

Roby has been a fabulous player, over a long period of time, but I think Cunningham was better. He was a one man pack. There was nothing he couldn’t do and no game was truly lost while he was playing.

Paul sculthorpe was a better player than either of them imo

From the Gaurdian 23 Jan 2010 — As Kevin Sinfield said after the Grand Final "all our players could earn more money elsewhere"

Now tell me again I am wrong. Seems I know more about your club than you do.

You are very typical of some of the know-alls I employed in Leeds.

And that statement doesn’t mean they were badly paid either
