In my view, repeated, is that promotion only by performance on the field is not what it seems. Performance on the field depends on the actual players and the quality of the coaching team. The player roster depends on how much a club can pay, how good a club is at attracting players because of the quality of the coaching teams. The quality of the coaching team has it's own dependencies, too. Also in play is club ambition, spectator numbers etc. All these things are taken into account in the grading scheme.

As regards the Guardian article, a much more productive and valuable subject might have been to investigate why the mainstream media - Mail, Mirror, Independent, Times. Telegraph  give so little coverage to the sport as a whole and especially to match previews and reviews. The odd article in the relentlessly negative low-circulation Guardian hardly counts, unless of course I have it wrong and  it turns out to be the favoured paper  of our target audience.

I think you’ll find that the Sun, Daily and Sunday Mirror, People and Star do give match reports and previews. Indeed the Daily Star describes itself on the front page as THE Rugby League newspaper. What irks me is the slavish coverage of Union in the so called quality papers of the Times, Telegraph, Express, Mail and yes Guardian. This in a sport that has had its top division reduced to only 9 clubs. Moreover attendances at both codes teams are quite similar. I know it’s often said ours is a Northern sport, but look at their spread- 3 in the South West, 2 In the Midlands, 2 in London and 2 in whole of the North-hardly the whole country.     I’m afraid the closure of the northern offices of these newspapers many years ago has led to this situation. It is especially disappointing with regards to the Guardian which of course started off as the Manchester Guardian.

Oh for my Neville Cardus of long ago!!

Derek’s had too many beers again. The bloke is an embarrassment.

Maybe we should make Leigh pay for everyone’s travel to France instead of Bernard Gausch. 🤣🤣🤣

I know why his upset. 3 high tackles by Leeds and no action taken, while in the previous home match Amone gets 2 matches for an accidental clash of heads. Also in his indecent haste to disallow the Hanley try, he never checked another angle to see if his right foot was in the air rather than on the line.

  3. The League Express scoreboard this week showed only  2 clubs wishing to state their attendance figure.
The usual culprits included Batley and York, but now joined by Bradford, Fax and Keighley, although the latter did give a figure for last week against Bradford (an impressive 3,729)

But yet again the most disappointing   ‘not available’ came from Hull KR, despite it looking like another full house.

Thank goodness the fixtures last week didn’t include a home Hull KR match!!

The publishing of crowd figures helps to underline the current mood of optimism, so it’s very disappointing trend started last year appears to be happening again.

  4. Don’t know why, but we seemed to have gone away from passing movements to both wings. I thought I was watching a Union team with all those useless short kicks near the opposition line. Reminded me of Reynolds last season/ he was an expert at this, although we are going to miss his goalkicking.

Hope that Tom Amone can calm down. Seem to get targeted last night and did not seem to like it.

  5. This is a headline on the Serious about Rugby League website, apparently lamenting the final on June 8 will clash with the rugby union grand final on at the same time and date.

What a load of B. S.!! It will only help to emphasise the difference in quality of League over Union and am willing to believe that we will easily win the battle for viewers, especially being on BBC 1.

  6. As it stands per the printed fixture list in the League Express, 19 of the 27 rounds are showing 3 games or more on a Friday night.
This obsession with Friday night games really annoys me as a Leigh fan as it means we always have to miss watching the live Sky match that night. Of the 13 home matches allocated, there are 11 on Friday, 1 on Thursday, 1 on Saturday afternoon but not 1 on a Sunday.

So if in future if TV demands lead to changes away from Friday nights, then so be it!

I can remember certain league matches being shown (1970s?), such as the Leeds v Cas Boxing Day game when they'd get 18,000 range crowds. Leeds was a popular fall-back for games as they had the undersoil heating and I can recall going to freezing cold league games at Headingley that were on Grandstand. The infamous Leeds v Halifax match with the dog on the pitch (K9) was also, I feel, a league game (possibly the lowest point of morale ever reached in our game). I think it was in the 80s-90s when they decided to only screen cup, JP/Regal and internationals.

If true, this will be the best ever television season for RL. We forget or are too young to remember how awful RL was once treated. All games (bar CC final) were 2nd half only, the commentary was incomprehensible, no summarisers, no other channel broadcasters, and there was absolutely no context discussion. Relatively speaking, we have it incredibly good at the mo.

And also during the second half transmission, the latest football scores were emblazoned at the bottom of the screen while the match was in progress!

  8. Apparently the kick offs will be 17,30. Going off that, and the League Express fixture list the BBC games will be :-

Feb 17 Catalans v Warrington,                         Feb 24 Giants v St Helens                           Mar  2  Leeds v Catalans                            Mar  9 Catalans v Hull                               Mar 16 Catalans v Cas                               Mar 30 Salford v Leigh                              May  6  Leigh v Cas                                   May 11 Catalans v Leeds                          May 25 Catalans v Warrington                 June 1  Hull KR v Leigh

But the Catalans home games might be their normal kick off times. Take say 4 of these out and you get the first tranche of 6 games to May 11, with the rest to be decided later in the season.

  9. Is the R.F.L. taking a major risk scheduling the the 1895 games and challenge cup early rounds all the way through mid January and all through February, two of the coldest months of Winter?  Fortunately the previous winters have been quite mild. However a normal one this time could cause significant disruption with several postponements.

As the Challenge Cup would take preference in any fixture pile-up, the 1895 Cup could be difficult to complete.

  10. Can someone tell me why we couldn’t play at least  3 of the 4 loop fixtures in the opening 3 weeks of the season? Instead we have the ridiculous situation of games like Cas v Leigh being played on the same ground on August 2nd and September 6th, only 5 weeks apart. Total madness! And I expect other clubs have similar situations as well.

  11. There is a different perspective from us Leigh fans. Last year was only our 3rd appearance at Magic Weekend, and our 1st victory, so obviously we can’t wait for this year’s event.

As for Elland Road, its capacity is just under 38,000 and going off previous attendances at MW, it should be almost full for both days, which should ensure a cracking atmosphere. As for dislike of loop fixtures, Derek tried to achieve a 14 team Superleague when we were in the Championship, but through self interest he was double crossed. Superleague teams will never vote for 1/14 of the pie rather than 1/12.

  12. I can see the Yorkshire championship and League 1 teams suggesting having East  and West conferences of 11 clubs in each, meaning less travel and plenty of local derbies:-The east would have Bradford, Batley, Dewsbury, Doncaster, Featherstone, Halifax, Keighley, Hunslet, Sheffield, Wakefield and York. The one drawback in this is the West division would have to include North Wales, Hurricanes, Cornwall and Toulouse/London, and so would have to be compensated for extra travelling costs. Playing each other in the same division twice would give 20 games and then you could play an extra 6 matches against clubs in the other conferences or say an 8 team playoff system featuring the top 4 clubs from each conference.

Hopefully Leigh get a chunk of the HS2 funds.

Maybe a shuttle service to Wigan station.

Why is not having a train station such a topic of discussion on various threads? I have lived in Leigh and Cheadle, both without a train station for over 50 years without difficulty. Do people not own cars like I have done since I was 22 years old. Leigh has always had a great bus service especially now with the V1 guided busway to Manchester.

Anyway with all the current strikes by drivers on £60.000 per annum, and the repeated lateness of the trains, have they got much of a future?
