  1. Another very good performance, especially second half when we really turned the screw on the opposition. The forwards looked powerful, especially the Chapelhows, and the younger players like Astley and Aldridge looked assured. Turner and Wardle were hard to deal with, and Wildie and the half backs steered the team around the field well and we were good value for the win. Swinton away next, if they beat West Hull. Lovely stuff. Other teams will be taking note..
  2. Making good meters up the middle and had the field position, but we’ve not executed well enough. Need to improve our discipline too. Barrow’s defence and kicking very good.
  3. It’s on LinkedIn. He does them regularly and often starts them with the phrase ‘I hate Rugby League’ or ‘I love Rugby League’.
  4. Yes, but it’s home games that League 1 teams are desperate for the income from (Hunslet will get two of which), and then the groups are arranged on a geographical basis. The clubs pushed for this and worked with the RFL because they wanted guaranteed income after losing London Skolars. Cornwall even offered to miss out on the competition (contrary to popular belief) to make the competition format work.
  5. Not sure Sheffield, Fev, Leigh and Halifax fans would agree, having seen their teams winning silverware at Wembley (and the Tottenham stadium in the case of Leigh) for the first time in many years.
  6. If you’re into chicken shops though, boy, you’re in for a treat.
  7. Or train to Mills Hill and 5 minute taxi to BP.
  8. Don’t ye worry Browny, there’s young talent across the team in the likes of Logan Astley from Wigan, Bailey Aldridge from Leeds and Jumah Sambou from Saints.
  9. Beaten by a Roughyeds side featuring Jordan Turner, Elijah Taylor, Joe Wardle, Danny Craven and Craig Kopczak, amongst others. Bring on the season..
  10. It was the Championship teams that asked Cornwall not to enter the 1895 Cup to be fair, as no one fancied the trip down there. Not a good look though, as they wanted to be in it.
  11. I’m of the opinion that if the Championship and League 1 merge for 2025 then so be it. We still want to be winning the comp regardless, and of course performance is a large part of the grading criteria. The home 1895 Cup tie against a Championship side is intriguing. It could really start the season off with a bang.
  12. This was brought up at Oldham’s fan forum last night. The board said it was 99% confirmed that League 1 will continue (with Newcastle) with loop fixtures and an extended 1895 Cup.
  13. A few points on fixtures from last night. It’s looking as though the the league structure will be League 1, playing all teams home and away (including Newcastle) plus some loop fixtures. There’ll be an extended 1895 Cup too where we’ll play a top end Championship club at home early in the season. Less empty weekends. We’re playing a Boxing Day fixture away at Keighley. Law Cup as usual, away at Rochdale, where hopefully fans can be better accommodated. Although not confirmed, it was alluded to that we may be playing a Super League team in a pre season fixture. And yes, DR with Wigan.
  14. True, their run in the final part of the season and play-offs was brilliant. I’m glad standards are being raised off the field though. We want strong clubs that can invest in infrastructure and not just a squad of players for a season (that often end up playing in a crumbling or inadequate stadium).
  15. Good stuff. There has been a clear effort to move away from the identity of the “new” club and it being only 25 years old. I wonder if they’re considering changing the crest and losing the shield design, which looks poor on shirts and merchandise in my opinion.
  16. You’d imagine there’ll be an article on the club website uploaded soon.
  17. I’ve really enjoyed watching Paga play, but the melee he started when we should have had a scrum, deep in their half, minutes left to play.. that totally killed us. Crusaders had cut through us throughout the second half, and to give them the field position from a penalty that late-on… suicide.
  18. It’s not a case of “buying a place in Super League”, it’s making sure various components of said-club and it’s infrastructure are up to a minimum standard.
  19. Tackling Jordan Paga must be like trying to tackle a wet eel. Great player. Brilliant to be back in BP watching Roughyeds. Here’s to many more occasions and an exciting play-offs.
  20. A fantastic listen, and gives fans a lot of hope for the future. It’s good to hear how positive the relationship is between the club, Latics and BP. Interviewing Johnson in front of the pitch at BP
  21. Initial contact was fine. The contact with the head came secondary when Welsby was on the deck.

    Grading

Not saying it was, but it’s a counter-argument I’ve read many times on different platforms. Simply put, clubs are going to have to invest in multiple parts of their clubs to improve off the field, rather than spaffing the majority of their income on players’ wages and relying on wealthy benefactors or hand-outs. Add this to the relegation issue I’ve mentioned above. And IMG’s résumé. And the fact that the majority of clubs have voted for it and see it as a great opportunity for the sport.

    Grading

So do weaken the Super League and distribute more money around or try and bring standards up across the board. That’s the balance. This idea that it’s going to create a “closed shop” isn’t true though is it? The idea is that clubs have to grow themselves across a number of parameters off field before they play in the Super League (the flag ship RL comp in the Northern Hemisphere). Leigh had to take a massive gamble in building a strong and expensive squad on multi year deals in the Championship to get promoted and then be strong enough to stay in Super League. Over the last few years now clubs just couldn’t make the jump up to Super League and just came back down again straight away. Promotion and relegation was broken. Whilst England underperformed in that semi-final, that “small pacific nation” has a squad made of top NRL talent that has been brought up in Australian club systems.
