What do Salford bring to SL?

    Entertainment.

I am an old timer who watched Swinton in the 1960s when the wonderful Cliff Evans was Coaching with moves from Swinton`s own 25.

Rowley thinks the same way and has done away with driving props.   Would guess Hull were a stone aman heavier than Salford today and Rowleyball worked again.

I'm an even older timer and watched the Evans coached Swinton side in the 50's when Hull had another wonderful Welsh coach called Roy Francis. After leaving Swinton Evans had a few years coaching Salford.

What a finish! Inches off! Frantic second half with Souths hanging on desperately. They made too many errors and in my view, the winning score was a true reflection of the game.

Think Penrith could have iced the game with 3 excellent drop goal opportunities in the last 10 mins but chose to go for tries. Souths needed to get Mitchell involved more as he presented a real danger. Ilias was well contained along with Walker.

At no stage did Penrith look as though they would lose their 3rd home game in a row and against Souths have only lost 1 in the last 11.

  3. Am currently reading 'Mao- The Unknown Story' by Jung Chang( author of Wild Swans). Been fascinated by China since visiting for a couple of weeks holiday back in 1978 when the streets of Beijing were full of bicycles with not a private car to be seen. At that time Mao had been dead for a couple of years.

Still have my little 'Red Book' and blue Mao cap with the red star as momentos of the trip. Have been to Hong Kong many times since but not to the mainland.

    Just finished it

I get why people say it's good but the relentless misery means I'm a no for series 2

I started to really hate Sarah L by the end too....

Watched Series 1 and 2 seemingly years ago and now up to episode 3 in Series 3 which is currently on one of our Government channels. My wife loves the show!

Isn't the nearest high security prison to Sheffield at Wakefield? A Hull school classmate worked there as a prison officer for a while after training at Brixton back in the early 60's.

Without fans, clubs are nothing. Owners come and go and for every decent one you get far more shocking ones. If only we could get to a stage where clubs were fan owned and not a play toy for billionaire Saudi's etc (although I appreciate this is more a football issue than RL).

South Sydney have 2 Billionaire owners plus a mere millionaire in Russel Crowe with the latter quitting the club next year and owning 37 and a half percent. Twenty five percent is owned by their members who have veto rights in certain areas.

I was a member of the club for the first 5 years I lived in Sydney.

Brisbane Broncos had a horse that used to run round the pitch when they scored.

I went to the WCC pool game in 97 when they hammered Saints - we all thought the horse was going to keel over with exhaustion by the end of the match....

A horse currently running in Aus. is called Benjii Bullet with owners including Benjii himself,Robbie Farrah, Royce Symons and Todd Payten. Runs in Queensland mostly on the Sunshine Coast.

Bit of a blank I am afraid with 32 starts 0 wins and winnings just short of A$ 20K.

We stay in Leura.  A lovely gentle paced town.  Stayed at one place and the bed was so big that my side of the bed was in Leura and my wife’s side was in Katoomba!!

Done the usual touristy things and really enjoyed visiting the Jenolan caves.

Was Brighton far too lively for the both of you 😄😄😄😄

We are next village down in Wentworth Falls. Brighton stay was great for me with a job which would have taken me into Asia but my wife was a victim of a State Government policy in those days where single women were given priority in employment over married women. My wife had never missed a day's work since her first job leaving school and after arriving in Sydney worked a couple of months whilst I sorted out suitable employment. She became very depressed and despondent  and just wanted out so we returned to Sydney. Below a little anecdote.....

On the day of departure from Sydney to Adelaide we left for the airport by cab an on arrival the cab driver, who had remained passively mute throughout the half hour trip, unloaded the cases and before entering back into the cab asked us where we were heading. On hearing Adelaide he commented that "it was a well laid out city". As he drove off he wound down the window and called out "Adelaide has been been dead for 200 years".

Bu$$er, just noticed the date.  Wouldn’t have minded another long weekend in the Blue Mountains but me and the missus are off to Tassie on 10th Feb till 17th and the following day we are hosting a 30th birthday bbq for our eldest daughter.  So I will have to watch the game blatherated after people have gone home.

I can’t wait for IMG to take control of the game so these sort of clashes are avoided.

P.S.  If the Panthers win it will because the NRL is light years ahead of SL but if Panthers lose it will be because they took the game as just a pre season trial.  Aussies, the biggest whingers went the proverbial hits the fan!

Where do you stay when you come to the Blue Mountains AT?  Have lived there since departing Sydney in 2000 and incidentally my first job after arriving in Sydney back in 1968 was in Adelaide. Only lasted about 6 weeks  before returning to Sydney as my wife could not settle. We lived at Brighton about 5mins walk to the beach.

It`s a small world, I was up there (well next door at Bonny Hills) last Sunday with my son visiting the Bonny Hills Art Festival, bought a lovely little envelope sized water-colour for $300 quid of a landscape in the valley. Son mentioned to me as we drove through the area what a lovely place to live.

I mentioned earlier I visited Port M. last month. The main reason for the visit was to discuss work progress at our building site. This meeting was held at Bonny Hills Surf Club

    Your son has good taste!

Just googled Port Macquarie......blimey what a dump compared to Luton  😉

In my 70's saw a word on a UK football forum I had not come across in my 26 years living in England. The word was  "skankiest" and was used in a question asking people's opinion as to what they thought was the  skankiest town/city/place they had visited in the UK. About 100 replies were posted and the winner by a large majority was .....Luton. Never visited so no comment from me.

Our new home is on the coast about 15 miles South of Port M. at a place called Lake Cathie.

Very excited about this game, more so because we’re going over there for it. It’s a fixture I’ve missed, especially seeing as Saints have dominated the past four seasons, as it’s a fixture I really enjoy and not being able to have this fixture too has been annoying.

I thought Saints weren’t far off against the Roosters in 2020 and I hope we have a real good dig against the Panthers.

I will be there too J. Our house sale will settle on Feb 1st and our plans were to move to Port Macquarie and wait for completion of the building of our new house near there expected in late March/early April. I was not planning to attend the match.

The purchaser of our place, however, has offered us to remain as renters until we can move into the new place which obviously takes a great deal of hassle out of the move.

I have been a season ticket holder/ Penrith Panthers club member since moving out west of Sydney in 2000. Will not travel back to Sydney following the move and will miss the games and my fortnightly visits to the club for lunch.  Good for me is that there is an affiliated Panthers club in Port M. about a 15 min drive from our new place. Visited it for lunch last month and it is about a tenth of the size of the Penrith club.

Have been to all previous WCC games played in Aus. and look forward very much to this one which looks like being my last. Maybe I will bump into you sometime during your stay!?

I certainly think Hull will go well this season with TS at the helm. Like Warrington, I don't expect them to be at full bore from the get go, but both teams should be vying for silverware at the end of the season.

As my 2 favourite teams are Hull followed by Warrington would love to see that happen CB. The decade of real excitement for me was in the 50's when Hull reached 3 consecutive league finals and became champions in 2 of them.   Were also in 2 consecutive Challenge Cup finals and numerous Yorkshire Cup finals. Also were the European Club Champions in '56/57. Warrington were league champions in 2 consecutive seasons and won the the C. Cup twice being arguably the best team in the Lancashire league. Also won the ITV Floodlight Trophy in '55/56.

Both to finish in Top 6.... but do not bet on it!!

Which pub was it? I started drinking in the Old Town in the mid 70s.

It was the Tivoli Hotel in Mytongate which reputedly had over a 3 century history in the Old Town. Sometimes called the Tivoli Tavern it was reported to be the last pub in Hull that held #### Fighting. Believe it was demolished in the early 70's after previously being closed for a few years.  I left Hull in 1959 but came back for Christmas with my family every year until I left England in 1966. Was last in the Tivoli the year before. All history of the pub appears to have vanished from historical records and is not even listed in "Lost Pubs in Hull" which is a well known publication.

You love history so maybe a project you would like to pursue!?

Dad had to give up the Tivoli as he entered a reserved occupation as a dock electrician in early 1940 and we  went to live near the East Hull docks in Marfleet Lane. Dad was also on call out as a general electrician during bombing raids which meant we were the first people in the street to have a telephone and a car(plus petrol coupons!)

In the 50's on Friday/Saturday nights I went on a pub crawl with half a dozen or so of my pals before ending up at the City Hall dance. Included White Hart,Bluebell Inn,Corn Exchange and the Tivoli which was always the last pub visited.

On a Friday night Bluebell Inn had a great Jazz night and on  Saturday night a raucous sing song ensued in the back room of the Corn Exchange before we moved on to the Tiv.

Lovely memories of those long gone days!

Do you have any memory of the news from 45? I.e VE day and all that?

Yes-remember VE day very well. Surprisingly do not remember VJ day of which my wife has a vivid memory when she had candy floss for the first time aged 3 and got it all over her face and hair after going to a celebration at Millom cricket field. She was born on the day 3 years before the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th of August 1945.

I have lots of memories of the war years when we had an air raid shelter in the back garden. Lived near to East Hull docks from 1940 and my most vivid memory is of an  anti aircraft gun and searchlights mounted at the top of Marfleet hill which was opposite my upstairs bedroom window. Lived close to Marfleet station and a few bombs dropped but missed the rail line. No bombs dropped on our street but it was strafed by bullets with 4 houses of 10 in the street hit but only lightly damaged. Fenner's factory near the docks which was only a 5-10 minute walk from our house was hit in one raid.

One day after a bombing raid I saw a number of aluminium strips scattered near the railway line- the bombers dropped these to interfere with radar and searchlights. Foolishly I picked one up and cut my finger pretty deeply and a trace of the scar remains to this day. My war wound!

    Is that you Luke Gale?

I'm sure George Watt of this parish won't mind me mentioning that he once said he went to the opening of Boothferry Park in Hull in 1946 which suggests he must surely have reached four score by now..

Thanks OF. Am rapidly heading for 85!  First RL match I remember attending in Hull was in 1945 at Craven Park closely followed by a trip to the Boulevard. Mum born in East Hull was Hull KR and dad born in West Hull was FC. When I was born in 1938 my parents were running a pub in the 'Old Town' which was demolished in the 70's.

Haha I've not long took out my world cup winnings, so lost the appetite for betting. The manner of how Barnie beat him recently (coming back from miles behind) had the air of fortune about it, that I doubted would strike again.

Been some really good games the past couple of days. The standouts that I've seen being the unexpected MVG-Sujlovic game (with the incredible 161), Clemens-Williams and now Ross Smith vs Van Duijvenbode.

The Sujlovic/MVG game is my favourite so far due to the totally unexpected strong game by Sujlovic. The never to be forgotten moment came after the 161 finish which produced that look on MGV's face which then caused mirth and loss of compusure from the commentary team for a few minutes. Difficult not to laugh for me too!
