Strong rumours NRL #18 team will be PNG
RL Tragic replied to Bamboozle's topic in The General Rugby League Forum
I greatly doubt the NRL have had much choice in the matter , this is a geopolitical soft power move , Aussie government will foot the bill regardless. Australia is coming yo the end of its mineral fuelled land of milk and honey bubble , post Solomon Islands aligning with china it wants a friendly shield and associated air fields and deep water ports on its doorstep , An NRL team is a small price to pay . -
Why do t they just build one brand spanking new stand with the 2M .
-
The sport deserves so many more people like yourself, it’s heartbreaking how badly it’s been run , we should have 70-80k there without trying, very happy you have had an amazing time , and over the moon for Leigh

Sorry I missed the post comment wink

Yes that’s one mildly offensive implacably fixed in your ways I’m right point of view . Or we could listen to different opinions of current non fans and potential new markets to see how we are perceived and use this data to increase attendances , Participation therefore increasing revenue therefore improving facilities etc , Sort of like running a business. We are in a sport that’s is just about to have its funding slashed because TV companies recognise its shrinking market , Where we have gone from being sponsored by Tetley, Gillette or British Gas to Bachelor’s mushy peas , Most clubs including yours are propped up by very kindly but not numerous ( like other sports ) wealthy benefactors. Our amateur game has shrunk alarmingly ( yes I know all sports have but we didn’t exactly start off with alot ) I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that we should openly discuss all opportunities to promote and improve the sport and showcase it in a way it deserves.

Fair point on the beer .

I’ve had quite the opposite, I take everyone else point , However one of our two premier finals, our Showcases our showrooms to the world ,to have 30,000 plus empty seats I can’t see how we can think this is a good look. It’s not the fact it’s not a sell out it’s how vastly too large Wembley is for the occasion 5000 , even 15,000 empty and I don’t think we would be having this discussion but 32,000 empty seats !!!!! Come on When do you ever see a RU, NRL, NFL , Gaelic ,AFL showpiece final with so many empty seats never . I do mean showpieces by the way not ordinary games .

So do you feel that Leigh v KR would have attracted less than Wigan v V Huddersfield.
-
So based on the fact Wigan ( been there a zillion times ) played Huddersfield( not noted for their away following )there last year and got 51k , your saying that with Leigh and HKR ( first cup finals for decades hyper passionate fans , RL towns took 40k between them ) that it would have bee significantly less than 58k yesterday, That doesn’t add up , Regardless 10000 empty navy blue seats at spurs looks a S?!T load better than 35,000 empty bright Red ones at Wembley. It look’s an appalling advert on TV , either we fill the empty ones FOC with the forces , London NHS workers or some other scheme or move on .
-
ideally Wembley if it only held 70,000 My personal thought would be a rotation, Spurs Edinburgh Cardiff Possibly Dublin . the ultimate ideal would be to get crowds back up to the 80k mark . Over to the marketing guys on that one .
-
Agreed , when people say it doesn’t matter I get it from an diehards point of view who knows and loves the game , But from a perspective of selling your product it looks dreadful, Major finals should be or at least look sold out , the crowd and the stadium are the window dressing.
-
I’m all for taking it on the road , I think it really worked when Wembley was being rebuilt
-
I appreciate there is a lot of sentiment for Wembley but it’s just too big now , so many empty seats (32,000) just highlights the fact we can’t pack a stadium for our major event like our rival can . 18,000 neutrals is appalling. At spurs it would have looked packed and presented the game in a much better light .

Fair point I totally agree with you on the commercial aspect , I think my concern is wether the Women’s game in the UK is at the level yet to promote it as an elite level . I think part of it is that the competition is developing and also the very nature of RL and how evident the speed of the game is . Ultimately if it’s beneficial then great .
-
I can’t agree more , Before people start screeching and shouting, I’m in awe or anyone man or woman who plays any sport , and I congratulate the St Helens team today . Personally I prefer to watch the women’s game of some sports , Tennis for example without the aces and ridiculous speed with such a small ball in the men’s game , you don’t see the rally’s , However with the nature of RL where Pace and power is so evident and visual RL and the level that the UKs women’s game it doesn’t make for a great spectacle. I’m sat with a group of non RL people and the feedback was highly negative. I’m just wondering if at this stage the women’s final is adding to the event .

I think firstly you need applauding for your hard work and passion. Did Huddersfield not have some approaching 10k crowds a few years ago by opening up to the university with offers .
-
Good point , the market doesn’t exist because it’s not a market , the only way that could exist is by subsidies. I think it’s a real shame but I can’t see there relative success continuing as these things never do , Im concerned for their future finances .
-
Fair point, like I say I’m not criticising Huddersfield, they have clearly done everything possible to raise crowds.
-
I think a lot of the issue for Wakefield is facilities they post similar averages to you despite constant relaxation fears and dreadful facilities . Salford totally agree they are disappointing figures however they do have two of europes largest football teams on the doorstep. I’m not knocking Huddersfield just pointing out a fact that it seems regardless of facilities or success the crowds will always bobble around 5-6k

It’s not a dig it’s a what if , Are Huddersfield ever going to grow there fan base and if not is that detrimental to the premier uk competition.
