I see Billy Kikau is now being linked with a union switch, with French RU being the suitors.

    No surprise there.

Am sure the usual suspects will be along to pontificate that he is "no great loss", that the NRL is a "production line" of 1.96m confrontational, aggressive, athletic, sprinters, and that him leaving "won't stop Penrith scoring loads of tries". (Copyright Davo from Cumbria).

Meanwhile union will continue to hoover up the 'bums on seats' players who actually want to see the world, and proudly represent their country in international "rugby".

    The navel gazing will continue.

Indeed.... Robbie O'Davis going on about terrorist targets in the UK like "Buckingham Palace or the Eiffel Tower".

That's the demographic we are dealing with, unfortunately.

It does look like (from reports) this time though, that the vast majority of players wanted to attend.

Not quite true, the NRL clubs are their employers so they must have a say. I would be interested to know how many of them wanted to come though.

Exactly.  The absence of a strong worldwide governing body managing the international calendar (as in cricket, for example) means that whoever pays the piper calls the tune. (And the NRL clubs pay).

This is why the tournament is not realistically going to go ahead.... If it was up to the players, a load of the Kiwis would swiftly declare (via loopholes etc) for Samoa, or Tonga, or Ireland, or whoever. Instead, we are likely to see all NRL-dependent nations withdraw over the next few days.

This has nothing to do with CoVid risks/player welfare, as is evidenced by the Olympic games participation etc etc.... It is to do with the NRL not wanting it's calendar disrupted.

The Tournament in my opinion, is toast because of this. It has no real chance of going ahead as the NRL clubs will put pressure on players not to compete, and so more nations will withdraw.

One very slim chance is that Tonga has the Prime Minister in charge, I see. (Due to all the corruption etc around their governing body) Their government might see an opportunity to have a crack at winning it and becoming World Champions. Even then though, I expect mass withdrawals by their big names, so I can't imagine the real Tongan team playing.

Absolutely pathetic, disgusting from those nations who have no interest in the players and only self interest in their clubs. Cut all ties with them, let them have their ###### little sport "down under" and invite all the other countries into a fully integrated international calendar for each year, no entry for the pathetic NZ and Australians. Honestly I hope we just tell them to sod off then, carry on the world cup with 2 invite teams made from any players from their pathetic competition that has the balls to play

    Right.

The problem is, "their ###### little sport "down under" actually IS effectively global Rugby League as a viable professional game.

The NRL is Fox News, KFC, Toyota, McDonalds and Subway; whereas Rugby League over here is The Warrington Guardian, Eddie Stobart and ABI Sundecks.

Their "pathetic competition" is where all the best players in the world want to play. It is where every Australian, NZer, Tongan, Samoan, Fijian, PNG, USA, and even a good few of the English squad plays or aims to play their Rugby League.

The failure of the game to develop any sort of global professional presence leaves us in this situation.

Yes.... The World Cup could go ahead now, made up of guys who play for Barrow and train 2 nights a week. Who knows.... England might actually squeak a win, and then you could include that every year in your "fully integrated international calendar" but the outcome would ultimately be the same... Without NRL participants, international Rugby League would be quite simply laughable.

I had a feeling when I was writing that there might have been some issue with Trailfinders in the past.

It isn't something I have noticed on video of Broncos at Ealing this year, so hopefully that's been sorted.

    I believe it has.

Not that I am in any way defending them (Broncos) but do we actually need a scrum line on the pitch any more?

I've just been watching the highlights from the weekend and cannot work out why on earth the RFL let Newcastle play on a field marked with union markings.

I first noticed this at the beginning of the season, had kept an eye on it over the weeks and was going to post about it a few weeks ago. Then for the Oldham game they seemed to have made some sort of effort and tried to paint the league markings alongside the union ones, so I didn't bother with the post.

This week they were back to union only markings. The Newcastle union team's last home match seems to have been 5th June.

24 out of 36 clubs in the British/European professional/semi-pro pyramid share their facilities with teams playing another code of football. All except Newcastle have rugby league markings when they play. How can a second tier team be allowed to play on a field marked out for another sport? If the RFL knew this was the case from previous seasons, surely it should have been addressed before Newcastle were given the final Championship place?

I totally agree with you. It wouldn't be the first time though... London Broncos were playing on a pitch with no scrum line in some games start until fairly recently. Some posters on here tried denying it, but I saw it with my own eyes.

Temporary markings are EASILY available nowadays for artificial pitches, so I have absolutely no idea how the RFL even entertain the concept.

It is yet another example of how tinpot Rugby League has become in the last few years.

As I said ages ago.... strange post for a supposed RL fan......

Are you that desperate for an argument? You spend your time digging up old posts from months ago? - any RL comments about your own team?

How's your petition going to get Danny Brough to play for you in the WC??

I had not seen the date on the post. Apologies. I thought it was more recent.

CGAF about Danny Brough TBF. Nobody in Scotland is remotely interested in a bunch of Yorkshiremen pretending to be Scottish. There are more interesting teams in the  World Cup to follow.

And yet you lot in Ireland support a soccer team that usually has very few Irish born players.

Seems you are picking and choosing which version of your national team you support because Soccer is more popular than RL in Eire - as i said strange comment from a supposed RL fan. Especially with the effort that Ireland RL have done over the past few years to encourage more local players into the national team.

Can I just ask how old you are please?

I think that you have been told before on here that the country is not called that, yet you persist in calling it that.

It is the sort of name that old pensioners (or those stuck in the past) are likely to use, yet is completely inappropriate in the modern era.

And noobiefana is correct - the Rugby League World Cup will make zero impact in Ireland. The exact same can be said for Scotland.

(Where I disagree with him is however, I believe the RLWC is still a very worthwhile event. Just not in countries like Ireland or Scotland where nobody CGAF).

If I was coaching a team and all my players wrote a letter saying they didn’t want me to coach them I’d walk away. The fact he’s staying there for the money is depressing on many levels. Glad it makes you smile

He probably has a mortgage to pay/family to look after.

It is up to his employer to manage the situation. This "walk away" notion is fantasy stuff. Even the classic football manager "mutual consent" is polite-speak for sacked. To be clear - it is your naivety that makes me smile, not the situation with Samoa.

Parish needs to go, he’s awful and the players don’t want him. If he had any self respect he’d walk.

I always smile when people say "he'd walk" or "he should walk"

The guy is in a professional coaching job. He probably believes he is doing it to the best of his ability.  He is paid by Samoa RL to do that job. If they want to remove him, they should do so. Why on earth would he walk away from it?

That’s a very simplistic view, is Jack Wighton “simply not good enough” too because, as a half, Moses is more a six than a seven.

Maybe it’s more to do with Canberra’s pack not being dominant leaving the half struggling to find the room and time to play.

    Interesting.

What would you say is the difference these days?

  12. Being interviewed post-fight, Gallen has basically confirmed he has no interest in chasing titles, and prefers to fight opponents who give him the biggest return financially.

Sounds like he will be staying in Australia then.  Shame, as I would love to have seen him try to take on 1 or 2 European opponents.

39 years old and 5'10'' at heavyweight - fair play to the guy for what he has done in the ring so far!

Yeh I saw that , his Sky contract is finishing I think . I’ve been impressed with DAZN . I don’t know how long they’ll hold the price though

i have DAZN,  but the product is miles below Sky UKs offering in terms of commentary, analysis etc.

    IMO anyway.

Good for him . Browne had a brief moment in his career but he’s incredibly limited and moves at the same pace as  the ice age came and went . In the boxing world this won’t be causing any ripples . Amazingly this was PPV in Oz , and we think we get fleeced by fast Eddie for our diluted PPV’s

I believe it was 60aud on PPV!

we do get fleeced though - lets not forget that.  Parker - Chisora is the latest ridiculous offering to be sold as "Box Office".  I certainly won't be paying for it.
