Hi guys, it's just my own personal opinion and thanks for sharing yours. I have been interested in developing state of origin - Like a war of roses. Also including areas like London and Cumbria.

Yorkshire / London Vs Lan / Cumbria. 3 match series at the end of season. I don't know what you call the sides, but would be great to see them go against each other to see who is the best. A good old slog fest. By having it at the end of season allows picking English Qualified players from the Southern Hemisphere. I just would love to see them go at each other. A proper old fashion rugby league game. The players smacking each other to pieces.

I struggle to understand the fascination playing these Southern Hemisphere sides, with the disrespect they have shown towards the Northern hemisphere. Rather watch our own English Qualified players, smack the hell of each other to see who is the best. I always believed that's the best way, we played.

The issue is your comparing apples and oranges.

You have international type games, and you have club type games. County type games sits somewhere in-between.  For me the question of

    • Should we have a Origin type game in the NH (lancs v yorks or northen pit boys vs southern stockbrokers or whatever).  Should not be confused with or a replacement of or even in the same thinking of
    • How do we get meaningful games for the England International team

For me we need to get England playing proper international fixtures if we are ever to grow the game.  Now there is nothing stopping a discussion on having a origin type fixture but for me this would be replacing magic weekend, not impacting international fixtures

I am more interested in York Vs Lan. England playing against Aus / New Zealand does not interest me at all. The NRL has made it so clear how they see international game, and still we have comments that they would be interested watching England Vs Aus / New Zealand. Those sides do not want to play us.

Would love to see A state of Origin series here. We need to develop our own games here in the Northern hemisphere. Why are we mentioning playing sides in the Southern Hemisphere. Samoa have already said no. We have not played Australia for nearly nine years. There are those on here dealing with reality. Dealing with issues, and looking for answers. And there are those here who make comments that make no sense. We need to focus on the Northern hemisphere Rugby League.

You really really cannot compare Yorks vs Lancs to Queensland vs NSW.

Looking at it from a sponser \ TV coverage point of view

    AUS

In Aus NSW is the most populus region in Aus,  Queensland is 3rd.

As a percentage of the Population of Aus NSW + Queensland comes to roughly 50% of the population of AUS

Taking Lancs, Yorks and Gtr Manchester (including Cheshire, Humberside, Merseyside) you get about 15M our of 67M which comes at just over 20% of the population of England.

As a broadcaster I am far more likely to want to broacast an event which carries the interest of 50% of the population that one which at best covers 20-25% of the population

And NRL is the number 1 sport in Aus, RL is lucky if it comes in the top 5 in the UK

I accept that it is less likely to attract attention outside of Yorkshire and Lancashire. But we need to look at the alternative for next autumn:

Flying Lebanon up from Australia will cost the RFL a similar amount to the Tonga tour this year. I don't think that we could sell enough tickets/TV rights/sponsorship anywhere in the country to make that financially viable.

The appeal of a roses series may well be confined to Yorks, Lancs and RL addicts elsewhere, but I think the costs would be less, the crowds comparable and the standard of the matches higher.

Of the limited options, I think this (along with the mid-season test against France) might be the best of a bad bunch.

I am not disagreeing with you.  But commercially I don't see Sky paying to televise this, and BBC if they did it would only be on for BBC North channels and behind the red button for the rest.

So the only income your really going to get is from gate recipts.  WIll that be enough to make a profit

Unfortunately France did that thing they do and messed up qualification for the 4N and lost to Wales!

Agree on the rest of the post. I think it was appalling that France didn't play the touring Tonga this year.

I was annoyed at first about this as well, but you had the Union WC at the same time played in France.  I think if not for that, France would probably tried to set up a game vs Tonga

Both Yorkshire and Lancashire would be defined as the traditional counties - https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Yorkshire & https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Lancashire.

I'd also allow players like Mike McMeeken to play (for the county they most associate with through the clubs they've played for, etc) and players like Radley (who has Yorkshire heritage).

It would have less appeal than England Vs Australia or New Zealand, but the premise thread is that the only international opposition likely to be available to England next autumn is Lebanon or Jamaica. To me this would have more appeal to a small section of the watching public who live alongside the M62 and would be less likely to lose money than England Vs one of those.

    Fixed it for you

The War of the Roses needs to be our State of Origin. 3 match series after the end of Super League. The players who play in Australia that are English Qualified should also be selected.

Pick two coaches that will embrace and understand what is being created. We have about 15 players that I know that are English Qualified playing in the NRL. I don't know of those playing in the reserve competition or academies in the Southern Hemisphere.

This competition will help to select players for the national side.

No this is the absolute worst thing we could possibly have.

This just reinforces that RL is a poor working mans game played in a small section of England with fans who come to a game after a day working in t'pit or in t'mill.

If you want RL in the NH to be back to being an amateur game in the next 10 years go ahead and re-inforce that fhat we only think about the M62 when we play RL.

You need to being speading awareness of RK across the country if you want sponsers to spend more, Sky BBC etc to pay more.

Not one person who lives in London \ Cornwall \ Brum \ Newcastle \ Wales \ etc gives any sort of interest in a game played between 2 Northern counties?

  7. What I'm not understanding is what is the aim here?

    • If the aim is to make the RFL money then I don't see any option which is not a loss maker, so then I would just not play an England game in 2024
    • If the aim is to grow the England brand, then I would play one game vs France and one vs another international team (wales maybe not sure).  Or I would have ENgland see if they can go down under and join the bowl comp with PNG and Fiji
    • If the aim is to have the top england players have a decent hit out, then maybe a Lancs v Yorks or more likely a England vs Combined nations no NRL players made up 13 team might be the option

But if the major concern is money, then I really feel we should just skip 2024 from an England perspective

I don’t think England international fixtures get much press either. 3 x 50 point floggings of France would do more harm than good

    not disagreeing

But ANY england game vs any other valid international side would get more press and awareness than two counties playing each other. And the BBC is likely to show an ENgalnd game, they would never show a game between two counties.

it just goes from 0.5% of perception (Lancs vs Yorks) to mayber 5% of perception (England)

I think it would probably be more popular amongst RL fans than England playing a weak opponent, but it would gain zero traction with the wider public, and likely zero media attention outside of the RL press.

This insularity of RL fans in the heartlands is astounding.  Who in the world outside of the M62 gives a monkeys about Lancs vs Yorks.   It would not even get mentioned in the national press, it woudl be that much small beer?

    Morning All,

I'm expecting to get shot down here but as someone who is a relatively new fan of the sport I have to ask the question!

With the disappointment of the Samoa series falling through, everyone is putting suggestions forward as for what can replace it. I have read the talk of Yorks vs Lancs on lots of threads but the idea generally seems to be dismissed. What was the game like in previous years? Competitive or a post season friendly style pace? Good crowds or bad?

As a Yorkshireman my self (All be it living elsewhere now) I'm well aware of the historic rivalry between the 2 counties which always adds a bit of edge in sports - I totally get that in an ideal world we would be getting Competitive international games and all focus should be on that, but in the absence of this would a battle of the roses really be such a bad idea?.

Maybe 2 games, 1 in Yorkshire, 1 in Lancashire? If its a game that hasn't been played in years it might capture a bit of imagination among the fans

Financially it would be a huge loss maker

Also I very much doubt anybody would cover it other than Sky.  If you got more thr 5K crowds I'd be astonished?

PNG might be interested in being the replacement. I know they are meant to be in one of the Pacific comps but they will most likely not be promoted now because of Samoa’s decision (should be a playoff to decide, but there won’t be).

I could definitely understand them being somewhat dissatisfied with that and looking seriously at an offer to tour England, especially seeing as Fiji will be hosting so presumably no home games for them anyway. Playing 3 tests in England would be a tempting offer for them if the alternative is playing a half-strength Fiji and the Cook Islands again.

Alternatively I guess it’s going down and trying to find whatever games they can or inviting Lebanon over for a Northern Hemisphere 4N with France and Wales or Ireland.

I think PNG mght be interested, but they probably would want England to tour them, rather than them coming over here

  12. I think we can all accept that we won't have a three test series next year for England at the end of next year

    So what are the options

    1) Game vs France in France,  France could use it as a warm up for the World cup qualifers they need to play.  Possibly game v Wales in wales but I don't think wales are anywhere near ready for a England test.

    2) Go to the SH and join the bowl comp. After all the bowl comp only has 3 teams (PNG, Fiji, Cooks).  Hpwever this while really boosting Fiji, PNG, Cooks, will do nothing to help England brand, nor the NH in anyway.  It also would be a financial hit.  The only positive is that Playing Fiji and PNG away will at keast give the England players some meaningful opposition.

    3) Do a combined nations type event again.  Only include NH England players ( so cutting on cost of flying Eng NRLplayers over from Aus).   This at least will give the fans a game to watch, and also Sky would probably cover it.

The problem I see is all of the above are loss making from a Financal sense.  I don't see any option for an Engalnd game next year which does not lose the RFL money,  As we know RFL have very little if any money, I would expect that at most we will get option 3 at the LSV.

At a punt you could talk to Wimbledon and see if you could do the game vs the Combined Nations in London at PL.  I doubt you would get more than 10K anyway, and as the Broncos are in SL at least for next season, you could try and use it to attract more fans at the club level.

    Adding extra point

If you are going with point 3 at Plough Lane (or outside heartlands), you might as well have the game scheduled for 2025 and 2026 as well as a warm up games before heading down under. So you schedule three games one for 2024, one for 2025 and one for 2026 all at PL.  2024 vs combined nations, 2025 could be vs France for instance.

Problem is paying to bring NRL Lebanon players over to Europe or Qatar or wherever. The RFL couldn't make a profit from three games in the heartlands against Tonga, so it'll be a loss maker against Lebanon.

I may be in a minority but I enjoyed the Combined Nations games. How about renaming them Pacific All Stars and playing them,  " AllStars" could even appeal to Londoners, though admittedly "All Stars" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

Then we need to make it something like England All stars vs SH All stars,    Do not prented its England as in the International England team

I can't see there being much appetite for a full series against France, given the turnouts against Tonga.

    Fully agree

I do not see any home series next year.  I do see the potential of England going to SH next year, with maybe if we are lucky one game vs France before flying down to SH
