  1. Was that from Cas player charging at him without the ball? I saw someone taken out by a dummy runner but Cas kept ball.
  2. If you took away a tackle per possession would you get more play like that last Leeds play?
  3. I agree waiting is not great. Nothing against Euros but I also don't see them as a solution to England's problem (inability to beat Aus) or RL's problem (lacking the public exposure that other parts get from established elite international competitions). Maybe put our u23 in against other Euro nations, but the best 13 we have should be playing NZ, Samoa, Tonga regularly if Aus don't want fixtures. Trouble is they are so much in NRL orbit / sphere of influence I don't see that happening.
  4. I don't get how the average age of the Guardian reader being 54 impacts on ability to connect with a working-class sport, whether or not I am right to guess that's close to the average age at some RL games. The gender split, with the %age of males slightly above that in the wider population - what do you mean by that? OK, ABC1 (particularly the AB bit) is a bit different from 'horny-handed sons of toil', but so is long-term unemployed. Do you view people in the latter bracket as equally unable to connect with the culture of the game?
  5. There is very little in the future schedule that I feel is nailed on to go ahead, and certainly anything involving Australia could be forgotten about overnight if it didn't suit the NRL in any key detail. It's not a great place for a sport to be in international terms, and does little to reach general sports fans in England.
  6. Good point. Can't say they're throwing out caps like confetti, though. Will get to next World Cup and be looking to those with 7 or more international appearances for their experience.
  7. Will be a b team if Fev players not available?
  8. I'll be honest, I watch and quite enjoy union, too. Over the years, the way fixtures I've attended live across the two codes have panned out, the best games have been union, a high scoring England France, Northampton pulling back a 20pt deficit against Bath. However, my worst in-person watch of either code was also union. Saracens against London Irish at Vicarage Road. Don't remember the score but lots of kicking to touch and much time lost to setting up lineouts.
  9. Weird one for great atmosphere, let-down game was Eng v NZ at Elland Rd, might have been 2018? Packed ground, remembrance day so a moving silence, then a haka, but don't think we scored a point all game.
  10. Out of interest. Guess you mean Aus. Have you got leagues near you? Is it an urban thing there like here? Something run through the clubs or mainly done informally?
  11. Thanks. Think a local club is running touch, but it seems a bit formalised, part of a regional league, and I always liked that with tag there was a league set up on site, in one case 4 minutes from home, and you could form a team with mates or sign up as individual and meet new people. Also no need to train, be a certain standard to get picked for match time, travel to away games on a weekend. I think I was a bit spoilt with tag, just seemed very easy and inclusive, enjoyable for all but the absolute extremes. Anyone who could just about jog and catch a ball occasionally, and wasn't a professional rugby player wanting something at that level would have fitted in.
  12. You have a point. I suspect the difference is in attitudes and practicalities. With professionalism, teams are more reluctant to accept that their run might come to an early end, denying them a number of games, for which read 'revenue earning opportunities'. What is funny, though, is that conversely, at the same time, having a playoff structure to decide a 'league' title, rather than just awarding it on points earned over the whole round-robin season, has crept into both Rugby codes and perhaps also other sports I don't follow closely.
  13. Genuinely get on board with this if you are anywhere near it. Played on Leeds for a few years, now not living near a league and miss it both as a sport and for social.
  14. Fair view and you've posted s possible solution, but the flip is that a weaker championship side that does squeeze through then risks 3 thrashing, OK might run someone else tight. More importantly, with only top 1 of 4 going through many of these games will have nothing riding on them...
