  1. Night train service Paris - Nice re-instated this year After years of cutting services France are expanding their night train network, and are re-furbing a lot of kit Europewide is gearing up for more night trains. Good to see
  2. No real idea sorry, apart from it wasn't Ryanair or Easyjet. A guess would be Thomas Cook or Thomson. Definitely 1997 as it is easy to remember for me - I flew out the day after Princess Diana died
  3. Back in 1997 I flew back from Corfu in the cockpit with the pilots. Got on the flight not knowing that an ex college friend was co-pilot that day and he invited me up there after I asked one of the cabin staff to say hello to the co-pilot Wonderful views and they did surprisingly little to fly the plane. It was also a surprise to see quite a number of other planes to the left and right and below during the flight Thought it was quite funny, when landing at Manchester, as they taxied the plane and came to a junction they both leant slightly forward and looked left and right in the same manner as you would do in a car No idea what type of aircraft it was, but maybe not a 737 on that length of flight
  4. Man In Seat 61 reporting blockage on the 'usual' route to Belgrade due to tunnelling. Its only till July 2021 (we may not travel until then anyway) and the alternative is via Ljubijana (lovely city for a stop) and Zagreb. No concerns it seems from him on the Serbian trains
  5. Yes, there's definitely a lot of planning around night trains now and in the future. Some doing routes that directly compete with the equivalent air route One route on my radar (though not at night) is the Belgrade to Bar train
  6. Flew on 747's a couple of times for one of the legs on the way to/from New Zealand (no idea what variant) Both times managed to bag one of the 2 or 3 back row seats where it was 2-4-2 instead of 3-4-3. Some passengers didn't like them as the tv monitor was a little offset to the seat in front, but they had more elbow room and a bit more legroom as well. Also, if you're a couple there's no 3rd person to be thinking of getting in and out of seats on long haul. More noise and movement from the galley area, but also the chance of bagging some extra nosh or drinks
  7. Watched it last night - enjoyed the film. Then also found Gregorys Girl on the UKTV website and had another watch of that
  8. Watched Comfort and Joy last night - recorded from Xmas Eve. Thoroughly enjoyed it, Bill Paterson is very good
  9. Mountaineer Doug Scott Member of the first team to ascend Everest by its SW face. They were late up there and actually slept on the summit! Gave a lot back to the Nepalese community in later life
  10. Just found out Pete Bland passed away at the weekend - died from Covid. Not a national figure, but a legend in the fell and road running community in the the North West. Sponsored and arranged countless events over the past 40 years
  11. Didn't Michael Portillo have it on one of his programmes?
  12. Just seen, a surprise - Liverpool were my team in their pomp. When I played in goals I modelled my kicking the ball from hand on his
  13. Gone back to the 25th and can't see no mention - Denise Johnson Backing vocalist for many indie bands - most famously I guess on Screamadelica
  14. Good stuff. Didn't know that Frank Cueto was a County player. Possibly the only Spaniard to play for Cumberland! Frank (or Fransisco) seems to be a common name in the family. My father went to school with a Frank Cueto who would be about 85 now if still alive and is neither of the Frank's already mentioned References to Mark Cueto also state him as Mark John 'Frank' Cueto
  15. What year is the photo from Number 16? Looks a good number of years ago The Cueto's are well known in Maryport and their chippy was legendary. (Pattie and chips was the usual - a pattie being 2 thick slices of potato, then with minced beef in the middle like a sandwich, then the whole thing battered and deep fried) The chippy closed a number of years ago. Antonio Cueto moved from Spain to West Cumbria and set up the chip shop business. One of his sons was Philip, and in Oct 2019 Philip Cueto passed away, and very shortly after so did his son Frank. who probably won't be the one in the photo as he was only 60 Frank may be a common name with the Cuetos, as I played rugby with a Frank Cueto in the late 1980's/early 1990's who was Mark Cuetos father Just found this link below - Frank was Mark's great uncle. Hope it helps https://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/14446843.mark-cueto-pays-emotional-visit-to-remember-uncle-frank-a-warrington-wolves-great-and-a-war-hero/
  16. Have just finished 2 Nick Crane books - the bloke who's on TV series Coast a bit I knew he had undertaken a few long distance cycle rides before but not these Clear Waters Rising - a 10,000k trek from Finisterre in NW France to Istanbul by every mountain range (not long after he got married as well) Two Degrees West - a walk (if the above is a trek) from Berwick to Dorset along the Meridian Both are fascinating - a travelogue, a historical tome and a logistics & survival exercise all in one
  17. A welcome dry, sunny morning here We've had c.13 inches of rain in the past 2 and a half weeks (and thats in a drier part of the county) More of the same tomorrow though
  18. Great stuff these articles. I'm strongly in favour of kids in the UK playing in weight grades rather than by year which just encourages 'just give it to the big, fast lad who has grown quicker than the others, to plough a furrow from a to b' rugby. But that then pleases the screaming parents on the touchline. Playing in bare feet though....although I agree with the sentiments in the article re tackling etc, we'd be evolving kids with webbed feet in the UK! (its been a particularly wet February)
  19. Album released in 2018, only discovered it through some random Spotify browsing a few months ago
  20. Don't know if the above link will work, but here's a band I've rediscovered after 20 years or so.......and shuush......they're Canadian!
  21. Currently on my way to Austria and Slovakia by train, with an overnight in London. Hope to get a few forms of transport in just on this trip. There's a funicular railway in the Tatras. Bike around Bratislava. Trams, Tube, car, foot, cable car, and possibly a boat between Vienna and Bratislava.
  22. Those calories sound a little over-stated but well done on your 2days of exercise I did Ben Nevis yesterday. My watch (Suunto Ambit Peak) measured about 31,000 steps, 9.96 miles and 1004 calories More calories than 1004 were consumed through beer in the Ben Nevis Inn afterwards, and there were nearly as many ignorant 3peaks (tw##s) walkers as calories on the mountain yesterday. Cracking views.
