'Nuggets', the legendary 1972 garage band* compilation whose sleevenotes contain possibly the first use of the phrase "punk rock". If you don't already own this, why not?

*before the term was diluted/polluted by an obscure dance music subdivision and, more recently, the Apple software of the same name.

The only acts I've ever heard of on that album. And I count myself as a bit of a music buff.

You may recognise the Standells' Dirty Water, without having known the name of the song or band. It does get used sometimes in TV programmes and adverts.

The Vagrants feature the guitar and voice of Leslie West, later of Mountain and West, Bruce & Laing.

And Nazz was Todd Rundgren's first band.

Seriously, check out 'Nuggets' - it's even more ace than Cas Vegas!

Actually, I didn't mind Van Halen.

I just still have withdrawal symptoms some thirty years after my kids played a video of "Jump" non-stop whenever they came round my house.

A cold shiver also runs down my spine whenever someone mentions Metallica.

The Electric Prunes: "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)"

The Knickerbockers: "Lies"

I've got those two tunes on a double 'A' side single.

Great song, saw a group of local musicians cover it at the Adelphi. They swapped Boston for Kingston and turned it into a song about the River Hull.

Yesterday, I caught part of a set by Scarlett Heights, who were playing a St Patrick's Day gig at The Ginger Goose in Bradford.

They don't play so many gigs these days, but they've still really got it. If you get the chance, please go and see them.

Currently enjoying the ex-Roxy music guitarist Phil Manzanera compilation 'Guitarissimo'.

The opening riff from track one (K-Scope) has recently been sampled by Jay Z & Kanye West for their track 'No Church in the Wild', which has apparently been a considerable financial pleasure for Phil.

A double page spread in todays i newspaper about this riff and phil Manzanera .

He has a new album out, on which he "re-covers" the track via Kanye & Jay. Some of his solo stuff is variable in quality, some is very good, but it's nice to see him doing well out of this.
