What Are You Listening To - The Reckoning

Recommended Posts

Forgot I had this: Don Henley - The Boys of Summer. Co-written with Mike Campbell (from The Heartbreakers), it takes me right back to the Summer of 1984. A superb-sounding recording, too, on my vinyl rip.

Adding a few more tracks from that year to the playlist now just for a theme:

The Triffids - Ballad of Jack Frost

Suzanne Vega - Undertow (demo)

Philip Bailey - Walking on the Chinese Wall

The Nits - The Infant King

Los Lobos - Will the Wolf survive?

David Gilmour - Cruise

Daryl Hall & John Oates - Possession Obsession

Joe Jackson - Happy Ending

Cold Chisel - The Game

The Mighty Wah! - The Lost Generation

Metallica - Am I Evil?

Yes I flipping am.

B-Side of Creeping Death, as all true fans :P know.

Blitzkrieg is also on the B-side of the Creeping Death single.

Well it is on the one I've got.

Heard these for the first time last week and bought the latest album. Very west coast folk rock 70s sound, but in fact a new band from Cardiff.

Spot on with the description. Very Laurel Canyon, 1974.

I like this! Edit: just ordered the album.

The Zervas & Pepper 'Abstract Heart' is doing good things to my ears right now. There's a little bit of Joni, rather more Stevie'n'Lindsey, maybe even some Judee and definitely a big chunk of Papa John.

A couple of live albums on DVD:

Edgar Winter & Leon Russell - Live on Stage. With the exception of the dreadful 'Against the Law', this is an excellent mix of Winter and Russell hits, performed with great energy and finished off with a superb rendition of 'Frankenstein'.

Leningrad Cowboys & the Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble - Total Balalaika Show. Finland's most alcoholic beat combo team up with the Soviet musical powerhouse to perform everything from traditional Russian folk tunes to ZZ Top.

This track has a strange following. In AUS it was used behind the promo for the new season of Walking Dead. On YouTube, half the comments are in Polish, none mentioning the Walking Dead.

Got a cracked and scratched copy of this on the green Warner Brothers label. (was my older brothers...was)

I bought the album when it came out. The gatefold sleeve looked like a giant snakeskin wallet and when you opened it there was a huge billion dollar banknote inside. I thought it was ace. I wish I still had it.

That's the one with Only Women Bleed (great cover  by Julie Covington) on? Our kid still has his.

Only Women Bleed was on a later album after he'd sacked all of the original band.

Billion Dollar Babies has some classic Alice tunes on it such as the title track, Elected, No More Mr Nice Guy, Hello Hooray etc.

Got that single too in the same condition...borrowed of course.

My youngest brother had a very annoying habit of lending my singles to his mates. If they ever came back at all they'd be scratched to unplayability. He also had an equally annoying tendency to cut up picture sleeves and stick them on his school books. The sleeve of my copy of the Ramones' Rockaway Beach has got a big hole where Joey used to be.

Chilling to the vintage West Coast stylings of Zervas & Pepper again.
