Great choices. Steve Jones guitar sound is one of my all time favourite things.

Massively underrated guitar player IMO.

Tis true. If you look at the time period between the Pistols first starting.. Late 75, and look at NMTB, recorded around 18 months later (ish) the creativity and style of playing is simply incredible.

But of course they couldn't play and weren't a real band.

Just to expand on this. Listening to Anarchy in the UK which was recorded less than a year after their first gig..... Like a few others, i was told that it wasn't them playing on it and the guitar was done by Chris 'motorbikin' Spedding. (I actually believed this for some years)- but not so. The rhythm section is incredible, Paul Cook playing like a veteran, despite being a mere yoof. Glen Matlock was no clown, a canny songwriter.

Rambling a bit but can't be doing with uninformed jokers dismissing the Pistols and punk in general. Carry on.

They played on an anti-establishment platform with a raw energy that frightened the living sh it out of the established music industry.

Dum dika dum dum dum drums on the intro of pretty vacant was/is awesome.... and jonesy very powful...

Sadly... a band i never got to see live....they played at goldthorpe club. Mate asked me if i wanted to go and i declined.... idiot!

It isn't black and white. Yes, Punk was a big, significant thing, whose influence has passed on into the modern era. But the whole "year zero" thing that you hear from TV talking heads (usually starting with John Robb) is a nonsense. The bands that were big before Punk were big afterwards too. 

 

The first half of the Seventies was packed with so many new musical directions which have endured on their own and also filtered into the mainstream.

Aye.... and i have loads if music from that era too.

But other than maybe possibly elvis and the beatles, who were artistes rather than genres, i can't think of a more influencial or choice 'changing' movement that was punk....

I was never a die hard punk.... i like my long haired rock, hippy rock blues etc etc too....but being 16 in 76 i was right in there when the dam burst....

Angelic upstarts at barnsley civic.....

What broke into the mainstream market in the Seventies before Punk came along - Singer/Songwriters, Reggae, Disco, Krautrock, Heavy Metal, Prog Rock, Rap, Jazz/Rock Fusion, Funk, the Country/Rock crossover, Pub Rock, Glam Rock, Electronic Music, 'World' Music, Industrial Music, the British Folk revival, AOR and even the 'Boy Band' concept (The Monkees, the Jackson 5). 

 

A very busy half-decade. All of the above, including Punk, can still be heard today, either as its own style or as an element in newer genres of music.

No one with any sense seriously dismisses what came before, I certainly don't, my favourite band is and always will be The Beatles, but there's a hell of a lot of people who don't know jack, who insist the Pistols were a joke band etc etc.

Saw them just before Xmas. Apart from a few pounds, Mensi is exactly the same as he ever was. He's one angry chap.

He's also one of the funniest blokes I've ever met, we pretty much laughed at everything

Im well taken wi these new fangled vinyl record playing machines they have nowadays

I find them too hard to watch. The music just keeps going round and round. It makes my eyes sore. Video DVDs are so much easier to watch.
