I went watching The Smyths at weekend, fantastic cover band, plus you don't have to listen to Morrissey wittering on about rubbish between songs, Billy Blagg was disappointing though. He was too quick on all the songs, you were still singing the line before when he was on the next one.

Also saw the comedian Jim Jeffries on Sunday, he was bang on form, funnier then Ricky Gervis who I saw last month and was slightly disappointing

Not really a fan of tribute bands in general but I have to say both the Smyths and also The Smiths Ltd (whose singer has Morrissey's mannerisms/dancing off to a tee) are very good at what they do.

This is quite a well-known video but it's worth a look for anyone who hasn't seen it before. Ren and Sam Tomkins, both of whom now have 7-figure Spotify monthly listeners (and Ren had a number 1 UK LP), busking in the streets of Brighton about 7 years ago. This wouldn't be anything like the type of music I'd normally listen to but it's hard not to acknowledge their talent.

In the 1980s I used to buy the Record Mirror, in one issue they gave away a free plastic floppy 7" single with 4 tracks on it, there was something by The Three Johns on it, a cover of Walk Away Renee and this excellent remix of Sub-culture by New Order.

This one presumably (though no Three Johns on it)?

That's the one, now I've seen it I distinctly remember the cover, I was doing my nut trying to remember who sang Walk Away Renee, I can't remember Hipsway but I do remember Raymonde.

As you say, no Three Johns and it was a solid plastic single, not one of those floppy ones that I said(maybe that was another free give away) just goes to show how the memory plays tricks.

.

James Maker (Raymonde) brings us on nicely to The Smiths, as he was a friend of Morrissey and appeared on stage with them as a dancer at their first couple of gigs. His singing style in Raymonde was remarkably similar to that of Morrissey.

Talking of early Smiths gigs, I think this was their third-ever gig (the introductory blurb on YouTube claims it was their second). Everyone reading this will have already made up their mind whether they love or hate the band, but it's hard to deny how remarkably close they are to what became their fully-fledged sound at such an early date in their concert history.

I did like a lot of the Smiths stuff back in the day, I was never too keen on Morrissey though, I'm even less keen on him now.

Even the heartfelt introduction to this studio performance gave me goosebumps, then the legends launched straight into 'Party at Ground Zero'.

Seeing Dreadzone next week. Genuinely one of the best live bands you'll see.

A good band whose name I'd totally forgotten. They were a staple of the festival scene for years. Probably still are.
