spuggies and jackdaws and hedgehogs and frogs

Recommended Posts

I put an extra feeder out last week and used sunflower hearts for the first time - the result being that the whole garden has exploded into life.

There are dozens of siskins and goldfinches flocking to the new feeder, while a number of previous visitors appear to have rediscovered our garden. I've had bullfinch, great ######, long tailed ######, greenfinch, nuthatch and wren in addition to the usual daily visitors.

They really have spread far in this country in the last 20+ years.

Striking birds.

I got a really good view of them. They were beautiful.

Heard the first skylark of the year yesterday.

I've found that if I leave plenty of good clean water near the seeds I get the shy birds to hang around for longer.  We've got jays coming in our garden again for the first time in ages.  It's amusing watching the robins try to bully the proportionally massive jays :D

Sunflower hearts go down well.

A feature of this winter, with the long periods of relatively warm weather, has been a marked variability in the numbers of birds feeding in gardens, presumably because food stocks elsewhere have been good. Always good to get nuthatch and siskin, both handsome birds.

Skylarks - one of the sounds of spring. I haven't heard one yet this year, although I know they'll be moving into the Pennines in the next few weeks...

I keep my bird food in a metal toolbox in my shed it has clasp fasteners.

There are no obvious holes in it but something is getting in. I have found slugs in there and I did wonder if slugs eat bird food? I tried a layer of salt and that solved the slug problem but something is getting in.

The food is separated in plastic boxes and they do look mouse chewed.

I'm going to try a mousetrap to try and solve the mystery.

Slugs seem to be able to get into almost anywhere. They get into my bird seed bins but don't thrive in them - it's probably too dry.

It sounds like you have a sleekit, timorous beastie. Alternatively, do you have any relatives domiciled in the shed?

Well it's working. Two dead 'uns in two days.

Both of them were full grown mice but I can't see for the life of how they can get in. It's going to cost a fortune in chocolate at this rate.

Any tips on the best bait for the traps?

Chocolate spread or peanut butter, relatively inexpensive plus it'll stick to whatever you want it to.

No it's Quadruple muricide now. 4 in 4 days. I'm using "Munchies" I haven't got round to going to get peanut butter or chocolate spread yet!
