Temperature recorded as -23.5 with the windchill on top of Helvellyn today

Coldest ever recorded by the Fell Top Assessors, just beating Saturday

Don't think they were able to get up there when the original Beast from the East came by as it was too dangerous

I thought you people got more rain than snow?

We don't have a thread for when it rains as

1. it would be about 3 million pages long

2. The country can usually cope with the rain (except for storm Desmond occasions)

We could have a thread called " Here comes the sun". But it would probably be less used than this one.

Heard a bloke in the shop earlier.
“ this beast from the east thing is like an angry woman coming back in the room and shouting “and another thing”.
A perfect description.

Not snow, but weather related.

The view from my balcony right now.

The air is full of sand from the Sahara. The tree centre-top is 200m away and the houses beyond it are 400m away.

At least it's warm at 27 or 28 celcius.

Awesome photo Tony!

Finally got the ice breaker in the back yard to break things open and finally get on the water!

Note This is the actual ice breaker in my bay but not my actual photo; stock shot.

Took a day-long round trip on the Umea-Vaasa ferry between Sweden and Finland the week before last. It was absolutely freezing - the coldest I've ever been (beating Workington vs Leeds in December '94) but we spent an amazing day crunching between the two countries.

Any problems with bears etc . Must be attracted to camp cooking .

Generally you use a bear bag (up a tree) or a bear barrel (protective box the bears can't get into).  And cook somewhere else.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Only dealt with black bears... cuddly lil devils...

Polar = electric fence, trip wires, flares and rifle.

Grizzly = no plan to find out!  (bear spray?)

Notice in my photo of my camp that no bear can approach my tent using shrubs/trees as cover.

Geographic choice of campsite is critical.

Black Bears: choose campsite properly, tree bag food downwind of campsite, campsite must be immaculate, never ANY food EVER in tent (1st line), explosive charges and blast fog horns (2nd line), bear spray and battle axe (3rd line).  I've had many black bear encounters, the large male lone boar is the real danger, also moms with cubs, they come into camp often; I've surprised them while hiking so its best to use a bear bell...solves alot of potential problems.

Grizz:  I've had too many close calls with this species, very large and strong, deadly.  Do everything as per black bears...watch constantly for fresh scat on trails/potential campsites (which you always check out ahead of time of course)....I don't use bear canisters since they are large and bulky and my space is limited, especially in the boat.   I've found that if I triple bag everything that works pretty good.  The claws, my God.  I've had many close and harrowing encounter with Grizz in my younger days when I used to kick around the Rockies but not for along time now since i don't live in BC anymore.  I could tell you some stories Man!

Polar:   The most dangerous of all...you must bring the items you have noted and that rifle better not be some pea shooter....they are so quiet its hard to believe and they will swim out a great distance to your island camp like its a Sunday walk....must be very careful if kayaking alone.   They are the most dangerous of all....very quiet at night as they approach your tent...then blacks arethe next most quiet....then the Grizz who can be somewhat noisy as they approach (snapping twigs, etc.)

Theres other commons sense things you can/must  do of course.

If your really interested Bedford send me a personal message and maybe you can come over for a game and we can set something up for a week....I've got a kayak with your name on it ready to go, that is if the damn ice would leave the Bay!
