foozler
There was an interesting thread on here a while back about the issues surrounding the Aussie bid to host the Fifa World Cup and the impact this would have on the NRL season. My recall is that no other competitions are allowed to be played in a participating city in the run up to and during the competition and this would involve the NRL being suspended for around 2 months. Given that the FA has spent a ridiculous amount of money to bid for the soccer world cup in 2018 and apparently 99% of the population want it here (not me, I'll be off to Patagonia if it does happen), surely there would be similar issues here with RL and for that matter cricket. Can anyone enlighten me on this?
bowes
Think it just applies to the stadia that are used in the world cup, which is more of an issue in Australia than here as they have fewer big stadia that several clubs share over there. The only issue I can think is if they give a world cup match to somewhere like Hull but I doubt they would
foozler
As an add on to my post, it was interesting to see that a RU Test match between South Africa and France was played in Cape Town the day after the Fifa WC started so I presume there can be exemptions made? The first word rhymes with "duck" and the second word is OFF! If the soccer world cup ever comes to England, I'm booking the whole time off and going abroad on my bike. I'm not mad but I am... Dave T
Some responses as expected to my question! What about if we were offered compensation to do this? Personally, I wonder why we don't look to have a month's break, and send a GB team to Oz/NZ for a proper tour. The whole country will be football mad for that month, much more so than for any wolrd cup abroad.

I long for a GB Lions tour again too, but dont think the Aussies are too keen.

Our games have been moved all over the place to compete, that will be ten times worse if the tournament is in this country. I say avoid it, let's take the opportunity to have a tour, you send invites, and you will get teams wanting to play the Lions in midweek.

FWIW, I would love to see England play say a 5 match tour, 3 Tests against the Aussies for the Ashes and a game each against NWS & Queensland. It would be the best development experience a lot of the younger players could have short of playing in the NRL for a season. Hell we might even win a couple of games over there. Chump change though really, and i suspect that any contract we have is us guranteeing them the games and them having the right to do whatever they bloody like. The Future is League
Don't we have a contractual agreement to play one game there a year? Think we'd be due some compensation if we were told to move... i think we can use it twice a year if my memory serves me right, but for obvious reasons we only use it once at the moment. come the 2013 world cup we will use it twice.
