If a French club is invited into Super League for 2012, which club would you want it to be?

Recommended Posts

quite an easy one really.. as one is a current and long standing RL club, and the other is a name on a piece of paper.

i'd get Toulouse into SL as soon as they're ready.

When we've finished this thread we can play "Anne Widdecome Shag or Die" and "Which would you rather lose, one arm or both legs?".

These best of the worst case scenarios are always hilarious.

these threads are more often like "pin the tail on the donkey"

"surely they've got to try somthing different now, maybe the little chip over the top?2

Quite.

You might as well blindfold yourself and throw a dart on a worldmap and choose the place it lands rather than put Paris in, and contrary to popular belief Toulouse aren't that much better. They are certainly not a good bet for super league right now, and they have a lot of work to do until this is the case.

Asking us whether we want Paris or Toulouse in super league right now is overstepping the massive question mark shaped obstacle of whether we actually think any additional french club is anywhere ready for super league.

It's like disregarding all of the people who turned up for a job interview and instead choosing between the two people who didn't and speculating who would have turned up in the best suit if they could have been bothered getting out of bed that day.

If RL is serious about France it needs to get both those clubs in plus a team from Provence

Having only one French team in SL is a joke, and will never get serious French cash flowing. I doubt if only two will either.

It would only take a couple of years to get youngsters stepping up to fully pro and you'd have four time the amount of top French players

Its a no brainer.

other than the fact that in the short term they'd get flogged, making attracting fans hard. other than the sky

Gawd, your transparent.

One more club other than Widnes mooted for SL does not give you less of a chance of getting in SL Jack.

Widnes tick all boxes apart from geography, have a sugar daddy the RFL were fools to ignore last time but won't this, RFL are committed to an NL club coming up and your lot are the only ones that in any way fit the bill.

I know Catalans stole your SL place and Crusaders and Salford stole it again.

But your home and dry mate. Relax

So why not relax with a second trip to France next year?? which one - Paris or Toulouse? Do you fancy a weekend in the historical and sophisticated city, or a weekend in the sunny relaxed south???

wasnt the word from the rfl in the latest LE that this criteria was abolished? Expansion clubs may benefit from being in new territory but heartland clubs wouldnt be penalised for being near other heartland clubs. in fact it was seen as a positive in some ways.

Predictions for the future -

Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG

Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

I promise to pay 10 to the charity of Bomb Jacks choice if Widnes Millionaires finish above the battling underdogs Crusaders RL. I OWE A TENNER!

Are the Paris SF seriously contenders though? I havent heard a whisper from them or the French RL since the idea was first proposed a year ago.

If they are serious then they would have to be a more financially sound bet than Toulouse, but we would need a signed giuarentee from the owner that they would back the club for 3 years.

We dont want another Celtic Crusaders farce.

:O "If"???

I've told you!

I put if, as in i don't think they are ready regardless of if my Team is in or not.

Just so people don't think i take the " i'm alright Jack " attitude like lots of Super League fans do.

I myself am 99% sure we'll be in, whatever N.E and his oppos think............

At the moment Stade Francais can join Barcelona, Wellington, Newcastle, Glasgow and even Northampton as places where SL clubs have been talked about starting up. That's all it is - talk. Back in the 80s the list of football clubs who were considering having a RL club was huge - thankfully most thought better of it.

As for Toulouse, maybe 2015, but they seem to have plenty of work to do. I'm also still not convinced that the player base exists in France. Until Catalans start producing more quality French players than they can accomodate in the squad, the game should stay with one French team.

Is Super League currently broadcasted live in France? I think a second French team would attract more TV money from French Companys and in turn better sponsors. But unfortunatley there arent enough SL quality players in France to support 2 competetive teams. Maybe in 2015. I personally would like to see Widnes and Barrow added to SL in 2012 and expand to 16 teams. But again do we have enough SL quality players?

the cap has evened SL up a lot, promoted teams need a little time to acclimitise but will do okay, if the league scrutinises how teams currently get around the cap we could then see a more even competition

That's true to an extent, but you can still pretty much predict which teams will be contesting the big matches every year. Only 5 of the 14 teams have contested a GF. And not too many people would've predicted at the start of the year that Salford and Harlequins would be any higher than they are now.

As for teams getting round the cap, you're joking of course. Every team plays exactly to the rules, don't they? ;)
