At first I thought it was the Rt hon John Leslie Prescott of Kingston Upon Hull!!!

Its nice but lets not be too naive. In reality we can't get a well known face let alone the head of state or current prime minister to present the trophy. Thats why we have the infinitely better Steve Prescott.

Sad but true.

You would have throught one of the deadly duo of Cameron and Clegg would have seen this as an ideal PR opportunity to appeal to the working class Northerners gathering in London for their annual day out.

I'm not so sure about that tbh.

We do get visits from prominent politicians to our sports grounds, and I would expect it would be pretty easy to get the PM (diary permitting).

I suspect that we have moved away from politicians (apart from Sports Ministers) on purpose, and there does seem to be a real move to link the CC back to legends of the tournament, wasn't it Martin Offiah recently?

Not really bothered as to what the reasoning is behind his choice, I just think it's a fantastic decision to honour Steve Prescott in this way.

"it is a well known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it."

Its a great opportunity for the games mighty PR machines to create and relentlessly pursue every opportunity to promote this story. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Maybe they should ask the RFU for advice.

Fantastic.

Stevie Prescott, what a person, what a way to Honour a true gent and ex pro.

Brillant news and a great move from the RFL

I meet up with Stev at last year's final, he and other ex players stayed in the Ibis Wembley (same as me again this year)

(scully, joynt, connolly and many more)

Stev had just finished his charity walk, he now works for other charities as he feels he would like to help other people / charities.

Great high profile in the media and again well done to all at the RFL.

Steve Prescott deserves a lot of credit for all the things he has done over recent years. However, if the RFL were going to go down the RL legends route he would be a long way down the pecking order. I don't mind the RL making this stance but our players like Boston, Hanley, Edwards, Reilly, Huddart, Van Vollenhoven, Gregory, Millward etc. are all floating around somewhere and under utilised.

I agree, after most media outlets shamefully ignored him when he received an MBE it's good for the game itself to recognise the great work he has done. The fact is that rugby league is pretty much on its own so the game has to celebrate itself and its players

Yep, although I think it is fair to say that this selection wasn't simply due to his RL abilities. The bloke is an inspiration, and it is a chance to further raise the profile of the work he and many others are doing.

i agree mostly. sometimes circumstances means we do the right thing and i hope it continues. to be honest im still seething over how steve was treated by the bbc at the last challenge cup. cursory doesnt cover it. im not totally down with the bbc are ru biased stuff but if that was a ru player having just ridden and rowed from south france it would have been a three part documentary at least. hopefully this will give the bbc a chance to rectify that to some degree.

im working class but someone like john prescott and his ilk would not appeal to me.what a ##### he is.

i agree that an older respected player should do it each year, and not because of having a terminal illness..Give an Ex another day in the spotlight, and do away with freebies for those who dont know one iota about our game
