I watched a few episodes and stuck it out until some woman gave birth to a dragon, at which point I bailed out.

My sister likes it.

I'm glad I bailed out when I saw Sean Bean in the first episode.

The tactics were incredibly bad and i could not believe that somebody did not see how anateur it was.

Still enjoyed it though.

The modern equivalent is that tanks take the ground and infantry hold it.

The historical equivalent is that infantry could not stand under a heavy cavalry assault, an early shock of cavalry in open ground was devastating to units unprepared like this. Your archers are 2nd rank to devastate with skirmishers in front of them, infantry third rank ready to advance or allow archers to retreat. You don’t allow close combat with infantry until you’re ready to mop them up or have no other choice. If you’re in a stationary position, hit with mobile forces, get them clear and use them as skirmishers or flankers on the edge to keep them bunched up for artillery to flatten; if they expand to stay survivable under artillery then the cavalry comes in to broken field to overrun them again.  Soulless butchery, but it keeps your own side safer.

One modern low-attrition doctrine is to use everything non-artillery to turtle up until your artillery turns everything else into red mud, then advance and start over again.  Once you get into close combat your ranged heavy weaponry becomes far less effective and often ineffective.  Worked wonderfully in gulf war 1 in 1991, allied combat casualties were so low because of sheer overwhelming firepower.  Having been on a forward observation crew at the time, I’m just surprised I came back sane at all.

All complete billhooks when you’re facing zombies though ?

I have never been in the military but surely you dont leave a strong defensive position do you?

Especially if your being invaded and your meant to be the blocking force

Pretty certain ‘Offensive Spirit (or Action)’ is a principle of defensive warfare.

There’s nothing more useless than cavalry that stands still, they’re just tall targets.  Best tactic is to get them out, cause damage then use them to harass slow infantry.

After building up the White Walkers as a huge threat to mankind since the start of season 1 the NK was killed too easily for my liking, I thought he would still be around for another couple of episodes. Where in the books, if they are ever finished, the White Walkers coming and the battle will be the main point of the story ( A Song Of Ice And Fire) I suppose that with the title of the show it was always going to mean that it was always going to be second to the scheming for the Iron Throne.

Im not sure what Dani and Jon we’re doing just riding around on Dragons most of the time just seemingly watching what was going on . Surely they should have been decisive weapons and been sent out to wreak carnage before the melee . I agree about the night king , I thought is that it ? It’s almost  as if they just needed to wrap it up . And where did she come from ? She must have jumped over his guard and luckily he didn’t just break her neck . After all those series it was just a sideshow really to the big story ultimately to unfold . Cersei has had a couple of week off so she must pop up for the big endgame

Sad for Iain Glen though I did like him. And that young girl who got squished by a giant . Visually it was amazing though , no wonder it took months and was the most expensive tv episode ever

Anybody else on here who has never watched Game of Thrones? ?

Add me to the list, I've never watched a Harry Potter film (well I did watch 5 minutes before turning it off) or any Lord of the Rings films either.

I have no interest in them whatsoever.

Visually it was amazing? You could barely see much in the darkness, then they added a winter storm.

Nothing more useless then a cavalry charge into the unknown either. ? It reminded me of the Light Brigade charge.

I do like watching the behind the scenes stuff on GoT that sky have on catch up as a compliment to the series . The work ,time , expertise and planning that goes on even for a few seconds is incredible . 70 strong prosthetic team spending hours making everyone up .... big stunt team describing in detail how they burn people and how they set a record burning 20 people at once ( no more than 15 seconds allowed ) ...and half of Belfast on the Battle Of Winterfell

What is this Game of Thrones of which you write??  Never seen it and with luck never will.

Yes.

I've been reading about people who feel the need to loudly proclaim that they don't like popular things.

Tried again with Series 1 Episode 1 on Saturday night.

I probably won't be trying Series 1 Episode 2

As a reformed GoT sceptic myself, I'd say 'persevere with it!'

I watched episode 1 a couple of times on my own and thought, 'meh, not for me' but I kept getting nagged relentlessly by friends who watched it telling me I needed to commit to at least the first season (10 episodes) before giving up on it completely if I wasn't hooked by then.

So, I set an evening aside and watched the first three episodes with one of those friends, who refused to let me turn the telly off after the first one, and gave me a few helpful pointers as to what things that seemed irrelevant to me would actually prove to be key plot points.

Considering I went on to binge-watch all 7 series in the space of a month after that, including one 12-episodes-in-a-single-day marathon in order to get to the end before the new series started, it's fair to say it finally cast its spell on me! ?

It was about halfway through series 1 when I was irrevocably hooked, so don't judge it just on that first episode or you might be missing out on something you'll really grow to love.

For me, now, it's one of the best TV shows of all-time, and this week's episode was the most involving, action-packed bit of drama I've seen in a long, long time.

I can understand why people who don't watch GoT get fed up of people who do watch it raving about it so much, because I used to be in the former group. Now I'm glad that some of my friends in the latter group nagged me as much as they did until I gave in and watched it myself.

Considering no one's ever had to fight an army of the dead, it's amazing how many experts there are on t'internet this week on how to do it more effectively than the valiant defenders of Winterfell. ?

When the Night King was standing before Bran one of the White Walkers felt a slight gust of wind and turns his head. That must have been Arya.

If I'm honest I've never really gone for Dragons and Swordfights, I couldn't stand Lord of The Rings, sitting through the first and half the second  before I gave up and have never seen The Hobbit. What I've seen so far just looks like a soft porn version of Lord of The Rings.

Edit

And according to my facebook feed it's Live Action Shrek

That's why I swerved it for so long too. It was the political shenanigans that really drew me into it eventually, tbh.

Yeh it’s hard to know what plan to devise that may work ... when literally  there isnt one . Mulling it today I think having the unbeatable , unstoppable Dothraki hoard out front was a sign of initial hope , especially with their flaming swords . And then mainly I think it was to show ( brilliantly ) all the lights , and hope , getting extinguished . That was really stunning and told you it was hopeless
