Just re-watching COBRA on tv, northerners cast as semi barbaric bad guys 😡

Is that worse than the standard "noble savage" TV stereotype of the passionate, poetic, oppressed Northerner?

Yes it’s much worse, in my opinion obviously

I've just seen an advert for an upcoming BBC comedy which appears to be about youths doing community service in Bristol. What struck me the most about it though is Christopher Walken appears to be one of the leads in it. Has he got nothing better to do than random BBC comedies?

He's making a transatlantic move - one in ten of the words he said in Wild Mountain Thyme sounded at least a tiny bit Irish...

It's come via Stephen Merchant and he has connections.

Guilt

BBC - excellent Scottish series set in Leith.

All 4 episodes of the first series and all of the current second 4-part series showing also on IPlayer.  They are well written by Neil Forsyth, well paced and acted.   A repeat viewing of the first series may be needed as the two are 2yrs apart because of Covid and the latest has some character changes.  For the 2nd series, I experimented with subtitles (!) as I didn’t wish to miss any of the superb writing.  In doing so, this provided a bonus brief pop-up caption of the titles/artists featured on the excellent soundtrack, all without spoiling the film.   Enjoy.

Reservation Dogs on Disney+.  Only 2 episodes so far but enjoying it.  Give it a go.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Surely Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett go close to holding that title .

i was recommended to watch Almas not normal a great comedy on iplayer they said i watched the first episode and five mins of the second before switching off. the language was ridiculous effing and blinding constantly and any humour was of the crude variety, i won't be watching again.

was it full of the slow piano music that seems to be the background of every drama and reality documentary these days? the same dreadful slow piano drag adele is using for her "brilliant" new single

I saw enough of that show just from the 30 second trailer on tv. Looks absolutely rubbish.

Alex Winter's documentary "Zappa" is on BBC4 tomorrow at 9pm.

Yes, that Alex Winter, from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. The doc is supposed to be very good, so I'm looking forward to this.

Also, isn’t Walken’s Mum Scottish? He might have wanted to spend time in/near the motherland.

Catching up on The Hairy Bikers go North and seeing many familiar places. Also startled by some of the less-expected produce from the area, like caviar, Mangalitza pork, wine, etc.

Sardar Udham
An understandably very heartfelt film based on a true story and with Indian and British actors.
Almost 2.5 hours long and rightly, a reminder of the terrible massacre at Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 during the “British Empire”.  Some scenes difficult to take in.

Watched this myself , just re-enforced the fact that he was obsessed with writing and recording music .Used to lock himself in the studio and live off nothing but ciggies and coffee .Liked the bit about Moon writing a letter introducing herself as his daughter , but having to push it under the door ...........Hot Rats and Burnt Weenie Sandwich are 2 classic albums which remain in my all time top 10 .

Right so I've watched the first two episodes of The Outlaws.

Brilliant. Really, really enjoyed it and just peed off that the rest of it isn't on iplayer yet or I'd just binge the whole thing tonight.

Not what I thought it was going to be which is a good thing. From the ads I thought it was just gonna be another run of the mill BBC sitcom. No, this is actually more of a crime drama with a bit of humour thrown into the mix. Very well written, so engaging, really draws you in and I think it's the characters that do this. Each character is incredibly unique, each got their own quirks and very distinct personalities. The show slowly feeds you little snippets of their back stories which is just leaving you desperate to know more. The lead girl in it is particularly good I think, plays a great role as a shy, nerdy girl that is just thrown into this world that is so alien to her, making you sympathise with her a great deal.

As I said earlier in the thread, the thing that made me curious about this show was the presence of Christopher Walken. I have huge respect for him and the writers for just taking an equal role with the other main actors and not being made the star and put front and centre which the writers could have so easily done. He is clearly comfortable not being the centre of attention and playing a much more subtle and quiet role than I certainly expected, although with the way the second episode went, he may become a bit more important as it goes on.

I really recommend this show if you haven't already started watching it yourself.
