Weather hinders the Steve Prescott team's Race to the Grand Final

Recommended Posts

The recent bad weather across Yorkshire has led to an alteration to the 'Engage Mutual Race to the Grand Final'.

Due to the torrential rain experienced recently it was decided, at a meeting between the challenge swim pilot, the Harbour Master and the Humber Rescue Team, that it

would not be safe for Steve Prescott and his team to swim across the Humber Estuary as planned. However, rather than being deterred by this the group have amended their schedule to

ensure that the Race to the Grand Final is just as tough without the Humber swim. In place of the swim the group will now run across the Humber Bridge where they will

collect their bikes and cycle to Welton Waters Adventure Centre. Here they will swim one mile in open water, the equivalent of the intended Humber crossing. The rest of

the challenge will then continue as planned.

Speaking of the decision Steve said: "If anything the route change prompted by the weather is making the challenge even

harder, incorporating the additional run across the Humber Bridge. While we are disappointed that we are not able to swim the Humber, I fully

appreciate the decision taken by the authorities. The idea of the challenge is to push ourselves to the limits but never to put anyone at risk, and it is clear that

due to current conditions that would have been the case."

Backed by Engage Mutual, the aim of the challenge is to raise over £30,000 for The Steve Prescott Foundation, which was founded to inspire others and raise money for

the RL Benevolent Fund and The Christie cancer hospital in Manchester, which has supported Prescott since his diagnosis with cancer in 2006.
