Denmark Rugby League (Merged threads)

Recommended Posts

We have initial plans to host an interntational match in May and Copenhagen RLFC have fixtures provisionally drawn up.  We should be able to confirm the dates shortly.

Incidentally, we are pleased to announce that The Black Swan will be the head sponsor for Copenhagen RLFC for 2014.  This is together with minor sponsors.  Last year, the club was an idea, this year it is a real active club and this is reflected in the value of the sponsorship deals.

It would be in the north of Germany, not far from the Danish border.  I imagine it would be of great interest to Jylland RLFC in particular.

That looks like a pretty decent championship. How long has it been going on for?

The Pan Scandinavian League started last year and it was a big success to fulfill all the fixtures.

This year the teams are looking to make more of a splash.

No Tromso Polar Bears? :(

The Northern most clubs in Norway have reverted to rugby union.  This is one reason why the Swedish and Danish clubs are forming independent rugby league clubs, even if it takes a little longer.

Out of interest, what sports do you source your players from? Do sports like handball have any affect on RL in Denmark?

Rugby union has a presence and was the starting point.  For one thing, most rugby league players in Denmark were playing rugby union.  Once the game was established, more rugby league players who had not been playing rugby union emerged.  After that, they increasingly came from many places.  Often, it is people looking for a new sport who have moved to the area.

Handball is big in Jutland and will be a major source of players there. Indeed, there are no doubt many handball players who are possible a bit short and bulky for the game, who will do very well in rugby league.  However, Jutland are perhaps a year behind in terms of development.  Except in one very important way, schools rugby league is much further ahead in Jutland and they will be sourcing players from youth development in the near future.

The Copenhagen fixtures are available here:

http://www.crlfc.com/#!schedule-and-results/c1x9v

Copenhagen have two home fixtures.  The second one, with Skåne Crusaders will be the first fixture organised by Copenhagen RLFC which caters to a crowd.  It is not the first domestic fixtures that catered to a crowd, Swesaint was in attendence when Copenhagen played Jutland, however that was organised by the national governing body.  This is the first time Copenhagen will attempt to turn a profit on a home fixture (considering they are unable to sell beer, that is no small ambition).

Further details will follow shortly!

An idle thought prompted by the Sally Bolton thread.  Our Vice-President at the Danish Rugby League Federation is a Danish lady.  Is she the most senior person in the minor RLEF nations?

Congratulations to Copenhagen RLFC!  The Black Swans beat Skåne (Skaane, if you do not have å on your keyboard) and other teams from Sweden and Norway to win the Scandinavian Rugby League 7s!

Get in!

Tough game to Ref, as the two are great rivals and some of the players were pushing the limits. Least no punches thrown this time, as believe all other games have seen punches etc thrown! Still the crowd, sponsors and players seemed to enjoy it as I did. Good crowd in the Sunshine. Copenhagen threw the game away, with some poor decisions and knocking on inside their own half a couple of times inside the last 15 minutes. Skaane took the chances that came and probably the Australian connection won them the game. Both sides gave everything. The Discipline could have been better from both and its tough to decide when to blow for things and disrupt the game or let it flow and ignore some things. A few things was disappointed with myself as Ref and hope improve for the next game in 2 weeks

Well, the usual suspects still speak very highly of you.  I look forward to catching up with you in April!

Thanks!
