geoffcooke
Watched by a good crowd of parents, relatives, friends and supporters, Junior Finals Day was a great success with some excellent rugby on view. Highlight of the day was the Under 14 game between St. Annes and Waterhead. Neither side was prepared to give an inch, reflected in the scoreline of 1-0 to Waterhead. It proved that you don't have to have a lot of points to witness a gripping game and both sides deserve the utmost praise. In the end the winning drop goal by Man of the Match Liam Aspin midway through the first half proved decisive in a match sponsored by Oldham RL Past Players Association. In the Oldham Amateur League sponsored U12 match St. Annes defeated Saddleworth Rangers 28-6 with Ethan Chiappe of St. Annes nominated as Man of the Match. The U13 game between Waterhead and Saddleworth Rangers was won by the former with a scoreline of 44-0. Rugby Oldham sponsored the game and nominated Matty Fletcher of Waterhead as Man of the Match. Rugby Oldham also sponsored the concluding U15 game in which Waterhead accounted for a spirited Saddleworth Rangers who are two divisions beneath their rivals. The final score of 40-0 was a trifle misleading as Rangers made their opponents work for every point. Patrick Casey was Man of the Match. Thanks and congatulations should go to Garry Hepworth, a prime mover in the now defunct Oldham Service Area, for organising the day. Junior Finals Day is too good an occasion to be allowed to die but the RFL's re-organization of junior rugby puts it in jeopardy. With some obviously willing sponsors it is clear that a lead has to come from somewhere if the competition is to continue. Sunday was blessed with decent weather but a return to a September date would be beneficial. Here's hoping this can be arranged for 2014.
