1,200 according to the match report, so pretty good. A very enthusiatic crowd by the sound of it.

Wow, that is a fantastic crowd.  I know that this is an international fixture which will no doubt pull much more of a crowd but this must show some potential for the game in the country.  What is the domestic scene like?  Any possibility of a (north eastern) team entering the french league ala Toulouse entering Championship 1?

For now, spanish clubs only play an handfull of matchs a season (6+2) (see next season schedule). It's rather hard to imagine any one of them making the jump to a 20+ games season.

Although, I'd love to see the spanish and italian game developed to the point we could ditch the RFL for good (worst partner ever), we are probably decades away, if ever.

Spain beat Malta 40-30 in the first game of the Euro Champs C in Valencia (winner progresses to the next stage of the world cup qualifiers). They led all game as well so good result for the Spanish who have made great strides.

Depending on whether Greece use purely domestic players you'd think this result puts Spain in the driving seat in Group C.

It'll be interesting to see what effect this has on Spain's ranking at the end of this month. They are starting from a very low base and have only beaten teams in the same range as them so they may not get much of a bump. Norway and Lebanon could also consolidate above them and Sth Africa could jump them with a 2-0 series win over Lebanon.

I was disappointed Spain did not come under the "learner nations" grouping at least in this funding program.

Five Full Members – England (RFL), France (FFRXIII), Ireland (RLI), Scotland (SRL) and Wales (WRL) – assumed roles as ‘senior leaders’ of five regional clusters. They oversaw the work of and mentored five RLEF ‘leader’ graduates from the complementary Governance Foundation Project (2012-13) – Netherlands (NRLB), Germany (RLD), Latvia (LRL), Czech Republic (CZRLA) and Italy (FIRL) – who in turn acted as mentors to a tranche of ‘learner’ nations – Poland (PRXIII), Belgium (BRLA), Malta (MRL), Denmark (DRLF), Hungary (HRLF), Sweden (SWRL) and Greece (HFRL).

That's a short season. Am I right in thinking there are leagues in 2 different parts of Spain? Do they meet for play offs?

That's correct. I was at the Madrid v Valencia playoff match last month

What's going on with the teams now?  They announced development leagues and then those disappeared.  Griffons seem to have become inactive since I moved back to the UK too.

To answer my own question, the league has been announced.  It will be split in half this season, two four team divisions; Serie A and Serie B.

Serie A features the two strongest teams thus far in Spanish RL:

- Custodians Getafe - The Madrid Police have brought Getafe Rugby into the fold, they are former national champions, former cup winners and current Supercopa holders.

- Tigres Torrent - The Valencian powerhouses and former national champions are perennial contenders.

(They will also play the Copa Espana on the 14th January)

...plus two new entrants from the Andalucia setup:

- Boquerones RL - The wonderfully-named new entrant from Rincon de la Victoria, just outside Malaga evolved from the Custodians Malaga team - Boquerones is the word for sardines or anchovies

- CdR Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo - from a village north of Cordoba, they're the reigning Liga Andaluza champions.

League starts on the 28th/29th of January.

Serie B has yet to be finalised, though the calendar and its particpants have been announced though it has a Valencian slant:

Irreductibles - first national champions from Valencia

RC Ontinyent - new entry from the town of Ontinyent, around halfway between Valencia and Alicante.

Alaquas Olimpic/Valencian Warriors - two Valencian clubs seem to be merging to take part this season.

Bufals RL - Another new team from Valencia, not much is known currently.

I would imagine other teams are filing themselves into the Regional Leagues below that.

Tigres Torrent won the Copa Espana on the 14th in Valencia with a 28-24 win over Custodians Getafe.  It also saw a women's match between the same two teams, won by Custodians.

Well done to the winners.
Do we have any video/HL of the matches?
