Netherlands Rugby League has appointed Kane Krlic as their new coach.  He has formerly worked for the RFL and Sheffield Eagles as a community officer, with development clubs in the Midlands and the University of Derby team.

 

“It's an exciting opportunity, rugby league in the Netherlands has huge potential,” said Krlic. “I see the role as a long term project, it's important to put structures in place which will make sure the game all over in the Netherlands grow and become more vibrant.”

 

“Jason [bruygoms - NRLB Development officer] and Timo have done a great job putting the building blocks in place, now it’s time for us to kick on to the next stage.”

 

Netherlands Rugby League Bond President, Timo Meinders added: “Not only is Kane the most experienced and highly qualified coach in the Netherlands but also a great person to work with. We are looking forward to applying his knowledge & experience to our national advance and hope it will filter down to the grass roots.”

This Saturday, 19^th July, will see the inaugural ‘NRLB Nationale Kampioenschap’ kick off in the Netherlands, with the first of a two-game series played between the big city rivals as the Amsterdam City Cobras face Rotterdam City Pitbulls.

 

Cobras Head Coach, Daan van Rossum commented: “All the boys are very excited to take part in this event. This will be the first time ever we have played together as the Amsterdam City Cobras, training has been very positive and now we are ready to go into battle. I am proud to coach this team and can't wait for the series to start.”

 

Jason Bruygoms, NRLB Development officer added: “This is going to be a great occasion, both teams have been training hard for the series. Rugby league in the Netherlands is really on the up at the moment; we've just appointed a new national coach, participation numbers are growing, interest is increasing and now everyone is excited to showcase our sport over two weekends.”

 

Game one will be played in Amsterdam and the return clash in Delft on the 2^nd August.

I was at the Delft venue (assuming I'm right) recently for a korfball tournament. It's a nice setting actually, although I can imagine there'll be a good few lost balls down one side due to the high(ish) fence and the drainage ditch/stream.

AMSTERDAM TAKE DUTCH DERBY SPOILS

 

Amsterdam Cobras won the first game in the NRLB Nationale Kampioenschap, defeating Rotterdam City Bulldogs 28-20 in the baking heat at their Rugby Bond Stadium home.

 

Around 200 fans witnessed the contest, Rotterdam taking an early 10-0 lead through explosive props Dominic Stuivenberg and Emmerson de Werk. 

 

Because of the conditions, the match was played over four quarters and after the first break the Cobras worked themselves back into the match to establish control.

 

Some evasive breaks from Cobras’ ever-dangerous full back Barry Vliek and strong carries from centre Floris Steenland changed the momentum, Paolo Mirani showing individual brilliance in scoring a hat-trick of tries, all of them being spectacular efforts.

 

Going into the last quarter, Amsterdam led 28-12, Netherlands International Evert van Bochove then putting a massive tackle on Cobras’ winger Justin Stook leading to a knock on which gave the Pitbulls some much needed field position.

 

Prop Bonne Wilce scored a close range try and van Bochove went in for a well worked score straight from the kick off.

 

In the last five minutes tensions ran high but the cool head of Cobras’ pivot Martijn Hermans, who controlled their attack throughout, saw his side home.

 

Amsterdam Cobras Head Coach, Daan van Rossum, commented: “All the players really enjoyed the game today; the changing room is ecstatic right now. For many of the boys, this was their first experience of rugby league and to pull off a victory against our rivals is amazing.”

 

Opposite number, Pitbulls player/coach, Jason Bruygoms, said: “We know we can perform much better than this. There were times where I thought we could have kicked on and gone on to win the match but individual errors cost us.”

 

“All credit to Amsterdam though, they showed more enthusiasm. We had a good talk in the changing rooms after the match and now we need two intense weeks of training to do everything in our power to make sure we don't have another performance like this.”

 

Game two of the NRLB Nationale Kampioenschap is on the 2^nd August between the sides at Delft Rugby Club.

Game two of the NRLB Nationale Kampioenschap at Delft Rugby Club saw Rotterdam City Pitbulls emerge victorious, 30-20, over Amsterdam City Cobras in another thrilling encounter to level the series.

 

The game was in doubt until the closing stages, Pitbulls skipper Jorge Vazquez outstanding and big Amsterdam prop Kirby McKean their best along with Patrick Ufkes.

 

Rotterdam’s newest player Edson Neves, who comes from a Basketball background, scored a try on debut in his first ever rugby league match, Cobras’ Roel van Rossum doing likewise.

 

Pitbulls coach Jason Bruygoms said: “In game one we lacked structure especially as we really missed our two pivots Marvin Slingerland and Uri Breman. Their return made the difference as they directed the play. I am really proud of the boys and it’s a nice way to finish the season with one game each. I guess we have to wait till 2015 to see who is the better team.”

 

Opposite number Daan van Rossum commented: “After our victory in Amsterdam I really felt like we could take the series so I'm disappointed we lost the game but respect to the Pitbulls, they played a really tough but fair game. The matches have definitely moved the sport forward here.”

After the game, the end of season prize giving saw Rotterdam’s Jededaih Timisela receive the 2014 Player of the Year award and Cobra’s Floris Steenland take the Rookie of the Year prize.

In Rotterdam on Saturday 2nd May 2015, marked the day the neighboring countries of The Netherlands & Belgium, took the field for the third time, to Battle it out for the Jerommeke Cup / Coupe du Jerome, in our annual cross border International clash.

With Belgium winning the last two times that The Netherlands & Belgium met & coming off a convincing win over Czech Republic (50 - 12) a month earlier, the Belgium team were bound to be a tough side to beat, coming off with a convincing win of 60 - 12 at full time.
The Dutch side boasting 7 debutants, where for most of them playing only their second game of Rugby League ever after playing their first game in the BNRL Championship in the previous weeks. Even though a win was not to be, NRLB Development Officer Jason Bruygoms said:
"Obviously a win is what we always would like to achieve & all credit to the Belgium side as the better side won on the day, but from a development point of view, we are following a long term plan which means our main focus is on domestic rugby league, this is the first time we have had strict rules in place where players have to be registered with a local Dutch club in order to be selected to represent their country. We the NRLB believe that this is the way forward in building a strong foundation for the future of Dutch Rugby League".
 

Nederlandse Head coach Kane Krlic had this to say following Saturdays game:

"No one ever wants to lose but we also need to be realistic. We went into this game with just two training sessions against a very strong Belgium team with some experienced Rugby League players. We started very slow and sloppy but the second half finished 12-12, which gave the boys some belief for the future. Take nothing away from the Belgians though, they played some nice Rugby League. We have put plans in place to develop the game in the Netherlands and make it sustainable, this might mean our national team will take one step backwards to take two steps forwards but we are fully confident this is the correct way to take us forward. By us focusing our efforts into developing our domestic competition we hope in time this will have a knock on effect. Not only increasing our player pool but also increasing the standard. Already this season our player pool has nearly tripled, if we can continue with this development then the future looks every exciting"

Nederlandse Rugby League Bond Development Officer Jason Bruygoms has praised the contribution of everyone involved in the first BENE Cup, which featured three Dutch sides and one Belgian team, North Brussels Gorillas, who emerged as winners.

“It is a great accomplishment to have the first-ever domestic competition played in this part of the world,” said Bruygoms. “With the helping hands of everyone involved, it has been a huge success.

“Seeing all the teams grow throughout the competition has been a pleasure to watch. We have learnt a lot from this project which we hope to come away from with new, fresh ideas on how to improve for next year with the aim to grow and expand.”

North Brussels Gorillas dominated the competition, defeating Den Haag Knights 48-6 in the Grand Final, whilst Rotterdam Pitbulls beat Amsterdam Cobras 52–22 in the third-place play-off.

The Belgian side went through the regular rounds undefeated, dominating a competition played over five weekends and featuring eight games – the highest number played in a year in the two countries.

Belgian Rugby League Association president Yves Kazadi was equally satisfied with the strategic results of the inaugural competition. “We were pleased to launch this transnational competition,” he said.

“Our objectives were clear; to provide the players with regular games so that they embrace rugby league, keep a competitive environment and learn to play consistently abroad, continue to work closely with our neighbours in order to cultivate the sport in our region, and favour local players in order to grow the skill-base.”

Officials from the NRLB and BRLA will now negotiate on the 2016 competition, which they hope to extend, including at least one more Belgian side.

NETHERLANDS RUGBY LEAGUE RUN FIRST TRAINING CAMP

In preparation for their forthcoming international in Germany (20 June), the Netherlands Rugby League national team has attended their first-ever two day training camp, hosted at 'de Horsterhoeve' in Ermelo,

Head coach Kane Krlic said, “It has been a huge success, the amazing facilities allowed us to create the perfect environment for the players. The coaches used a variety of different training methods to test them both physically and mentally. Due to the players' work ethic and effort levels, all have shown remarkable signs of improvement over the course of the two days. We were able to monitor their development from start to finish by having a video analyst on site. That allowed us to not only give the players instant feedback but it also enabled the coaches to review every session to make sure our goals had been achieved.”

Krlic added, “The camp gave us a great opportunity to work closely with the players on their individual needs. NRLB has taken an holistic view on the development of rugby league here. We have a long term approach to make sure the game is sustainable, which means we are not reliant on players from other sports. We don’t want to take any short cuts by selecting players that are not passionate about the development of the sport in the Netherlands. We want to develop and create our own homegrown players and give the sport an identity in the Netherlands."

IN FORM GERMANS HOST NETHERLANDS

Germany will be seeking to maintain their unbeaten run against the Netherlands when the sides meet in Gnarrenburg, north of Bremen, on Saturday.

The match will be the third between the rivals, with Germany looking to build on their impressive recent win over Spain. Their squad shows few changes, with Wolfgang Polte and Max Froeschner replacing the UK-based Keinhorst brothers.

“We are really looking forward to the game and the players putting into practice what we have been teaching them,” said co-coach and veteran German player Simon Cooper. “Myself and (co-coach) Bob Doughton were very pleased with the performance in Spain and we expect a similar level on Saturday. Our aim is to keep improving as individuals and as a team.”

Cooper added, “It’s great for rugby league in Germany that of the 19 players named all but one live here. That helps us to build a solid platform and reward the commitment of those who often travel many hours to train and play rugby league. Mawuli Amefia has been chosen as the skipper and we believe he is the first black player to captain a German national team in any sport.”

The Dutch, who are now under experienced coach Kane Krilic, have not won on the international stage since 2006, when they beat Serbia in a qualifying match for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.

“We are looking forward to testing ourselves against a very strong German team,” said Krilic. “We have talked about doing the small things well and then the bigger stuff will take care of itself. The team selected for this match is very different to the one we had against Belgium earlier in the year. Part of our development process is trying to evaluate as many players as possible within our international set up.

“It’s important for us to put the right structures in place that allows us to have sustainable success in the future.”

SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE PROGRAMME EXPANDED IN NETHERLANDS

After a successful first year, the Netherlands Rugby League Bond (NRLB) has begun the second year of their rugby league school programme. It is led my national head coach Kane Krlic and consists of delivering introductory sessions to participants aged between 7-18, while also providing resources and training opportunities for teachers. Last year, the NRLB worked with just under 500 students and have the targeted an ambitious 1000 for this academic session.

“In the first year, it was very much a pilot. We needed to see how the students, teachers and parents responded to the sport,” said Krlic. “After receiving high praise, we quickly realized the need to fully roll out the programme. Most of our work is targeted in areas which are completely new to rugby. In Harderwijk, for example, where the Gemeente (council) and local schools have been very supportive of our development, due to the fantastic response we have set up a new team within the area, the Harderwijk Dolphins RLFC.”

Krlic continued, “We have the objective that the club will be made up of players who have been introduced through this programme and that is a key factor which will allow us to grow and create a stronger sport within the Netherlands.”

One of the schools within Harderwijk, Christelijk College Nassau-Veluwe, have been impressed with their student’s response. Head of Physical Education, Hilbert Docter explained: “If I am being honest, we weren’t sure what to expect when we agreed to have rugby league on the curriculum. None of our students had ever played before but the response has been fantastic. Kane has been working with both male and female students, aged from 12 to 18. Not only are they learning new skills, more importantly, they are enjoying playing something different. We hope some of our students go on to play for the Harderwijk Dolphins RLFC and who knows, maybe one day, they'll represent the national team.”

Ok Rotterdam Nines is being restarted after a ten year gap

 

As a founder of what was an amazing tournement back in the day..with the likes of Serbia and Scotland Students , Broughton Red Rose,Nottingham Outlaws,Oxford OB, Heavey Woolen Donkeys, Essex Eels,I am now looking to re-launch a "Musketriers RL" for the 2016 Rotterdam 9's.

It will be an invitation side made up of old Dutch players,a few UK based guys and some novice rugby players from the local scene.

 

We have a hard ask because we face ,Robertson Spuddies all the way from Australia,North Brussels Gorillas (Champions of the Dutch Belgium RL comp) A German team Rotterdam Pitbulls ,Amsterdam Cobras and Den Haag Knights.

 

Hey that is no problem..7th May at Rotterdam Rugby Club..two fields ....eight international teams....bring it on.

 

Now what I am going to ask is who in my rugby world is willing to donate 30 British pounds or 45 euro to support  the "Invitation Musketiers" to take the field in a special designed shirt.??

 

" Prostate Cancer Awareness"is a something close to my heart (ok nearer my balls but not quite ) but it is a Cancer that is the second most common cancer in men.

So I am now looking at people to buy an ISC branded  "Musketiers" shirt for 45 euro (30 quid) to help me spread the "Prostate Cancer Awareness" message.
