Bears Edged Out by Blackbrook

by Robin Allen

Blackbrook 28 Coventry Bears 20

The Bears made the long trip up to the rugby league heartland of St. Helens to face Blackbrook on Saturday afternoon.

Coventry took the lead early on with good completion and quick play from Captain Alex Brown, who went over for the try.

This seemed to give the home-side a wakeup call as they put the Bears defence under serve pressure and levelled the scores at 6-6 shortly before the half-hour mark.

Further tries either side of half-time gave Blackbrook the advantage and momentum as the Bears gave away too much possession at key times.

Despite the dominance of Blackbrook, the plucky Bears never gave up as Coventry University winger Liam Scott scored his 11th try of season.

Tom Tsang then gave the Bears small band of supporters some cheer with a phenomenal charge to the line to score.

Alan Robinson commented; “This was always going to be a tough game, Blackbrook are an established club and one of the best competitors in the League. Last time we met was a close game and today was no different. We were missing a few players in key areas which I felt let us down a bit on our completion and ball control. In general though I know the coaching team are pleased with the performance. Next week is another challenge but if we get the win we can secure a home play-off spot which will be a good reward to end the season on a high before stepping up to the professional ranks next year.”
