10 dead at French Satirical Mag

Recommended Posts

10 dead at the offices of Charlie Hebdo (sort of Private Eye in French).

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

Seriously well armed.  And on the run.

They'd upped their security and had the building guarded recently, due to the threats they'd received too.

Not sure they expected and planned against this.  Recent attacks have been, knives, firebombs and ram raids.  This attacks was a major step up.

The terrorists have only got to get lucky once.

No need to do like some are doing and say that this was a provoked attack.  The freedom to insult everyone from Prince Charles to Mohammed is a fundamental part of our society.  Ever tried to suppress a joke or a film or a book because it wasn't nice to something you hold dear: the gunmen are on your side.  No need, either, to pretend that we don't know that they are Islamists.  It is obvious they are.  What they are not is day to day Muslims just trying to live their lives.  If you can't hear the outcry from them it's because you're deliberately covering your ears.

Secular France, and more broadly Secular Europe, need defending.  They need defending from these #### with guns - and they need defending from the morons who use events like today's to spread their own lies.

Hollande should state that France will refuse to take ISIS fighters back into France and deport the immediate families of the gunmen, assuming they will be caught. Amnesty for those family members who inform on  the gunmen.

For a so called friendly Religion Islam/Muslim faith sure has alot of blood thirsty People in it who are happy to murder innocent People. Many voices of condemnation from many leaders but where are the voices from Muslim leaders, who would surely want  to distance themselves and their Religion from These extremists? The Extremists are helping drive a wedge between their own People and others. Tensions are high enough between Muslims and others without These attacks. RIP to the innocent dead.

The number of terrorist attacks seems to be rising exponentially.

Not sure they have been in the 'western' world.  In the hot spots (Middle east, Pakistan) they ebb and flow.

Indeed.  A bomb detonated in Colorado this morning, for example.

Very much agree with all of that, though not entirely with this bit: If you can't hear the outcry from them it's because you're deliberately covering your ears.

I think actions speak louder than words, so it actions we need to see, in my view, and  a start might be for mainstream Islam to stop being so sensitive to satirical comment and criticism. Looking around the world, Islamic nations do not seem to be entirely free from strife.

They do, but on most statistical measurements - 5-year moving average, for example - they are currently increasing.

See this article: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iraq/10985470/Global-terrorist-death-toll-soars-as-attacks-become-deadlier.html.

And they will continue as long as some groups espouse an ideology that they think gives them the right to kill for the sake of what they believe in.

Possibly not as clear as I should have been: I was meaning Muslims in France, and by extension here.

There are a lot more terrorist attacks by Islamists.  I think that goes without saying.

Don't forget we did have the bizarre marking as 'not terrorist' of that white supremacist who was making bombs.

And not exponentially either .

People who believe in freedom of thought must not be cowed by this barbarity.

Free speech and the freedom to offend is well on the way out. Would we have a programme made today like 'Not The 9 0'Clock News'? Absolutely no chance.

I agree.  I haven't read about this incident yet as I've been at work (although I know from this thread that either 10 or 12 are dead).  However, we haven't had freedom to offend in this country for at least a decade.  Try using satire against gay people or disabled people or people of other skin colour and immediately the person being satirical will be hounded for being prejudiced in some way.  It isn't guns and knives, but it's effective at silencing people.  I'm not saying it's right to be able to satirise gay people, etc, but nontheless we are not receptive to being offended these days either.

However, that is massively different from what has happened recently within Islam. Offence has always been felt when Mohammed is ridiculed but not to the extent that today's Muslims can take matters.

It's much to late to do anything about it now, the time for that was in 1989 after the Rushdie disgrace. People are cowed and will be even more so despite all the brave words by some.

So all the satire shows since Not the Nine o'Clock News up to and including the present day don't count?
