Wikipedia states he was initial in favour of non-intervention. So guess my original post along with WR's post highlights he changed his opinion. (they never do) Shouldn't Churchill also get some blame for plunging the Allies into his second southern European debacle in Italy? The invasion of Italy was i think to attract german troops away from europe in anticipation of D Day. The germans hoped the italians would hold the allies back but they didnt and germany had to send troops as italy collapsed. I think the Americans would have gone for an invasion of France in 1943. Whether they'd have been right or not is a moot point. But certainly Monte Casino was no "soft underbelly" to quote the great man. Eugenics was incredibly popular among many people in the post-Darwin era until soon after the second world war. This article makes that clear. Churchill was one of many from all sides of the political and intellectual spectrum. It had gained in popularity after the publication of Darwin's work.
