State of our streets.

Probably more and probably the result of local authority budget cuts. Chewing gum is time consuming and therefore expensive to remove.

Is it me or is there more litter on our streets. Especially fag buts and chewing gum.

Depends on the area. I have seen some places littered with rubbish, especially shrub areas in town centres. I recently noticed one guy throw a cig end away outside a pub even though a bin was provided. It seems chewing gum is a huge problem which costs loads of money to clean up.

Note to Bradford Council:

The verges of Bowling Back Lane are strewn with litter.

Most of it has been blown from wagons travelling to one particular destination on the road ... Bradford Council's own waste transfer station.

Smokers and gum chewers are anarchists.

Do we not have a bank of potential free labour idling their time on Playstations in jails ?

I'm an anarchist and I do neither, why free labour? Pay the rate for the job, whatever it is.

If there is more litter, and I'm not convinced either way, I'd tend to blame those who throw it down, rather than just employ more people to pick it up.

Hanging would be ok....as long as we don't leave the bodies to litter the streets

Nowadays,  the councils have replaced all the electric street lamps that had been converted from gas lamps and still had crossmembers to place the ladder against.

There's nowhere left that would be handy for decent people to hang a litter lout.

The borough and parish councils round this way have had to cut their street cleaning staff to the point that our local parish council runs volunteer street cleaning drives every couple of months or so.

Something that doesn't help is that the edge of our patch we have a Tesco store and the trees into the residential estate tend to be full of Tesco plastic bags yet Tesco don't see it as their problem at all.  And they wonder why they have a poor reputation.

Not just supermarkets, fast food places are as bad, if not worse. When I was working in Inverness there was a Burger King close to the office in which I was working. The road around it was always strewn with their packaging, despite the car park having lots of litter bins. I often saw cars driving away from there and hurl a load of rubbish out of the window less than a 100 yards down the street. Councils should have to power to bill them for cleaning up.

It ain't Tesco's fault, it ain't McDonald's fault, its the fault of the lazy , ignorant feckless  litter louts. It's easy though, for people to load the guilt onto those companies they don't like for other reasons

This from 2003. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3222637.stm   I wonder what happened next?

What was the response from Tesco when this problem was raised by the parish or other council?

"Once it's out of our property boundaries then it's not our problem".  A paraphrased quote but the tone is right.

Unless Tesco are throwing the litter out I don't see how it is their problem.

Many companies do a good-will thing in cleaning up their branded rubbish that clearly comes from the local store.

Indeed.  How far away from Tesco's front door is the rubbish you're talking about?

Puts you and Tesco in the same camp then. You both expect the taxpayer to pay to clear up someone else's mess, rather than the perpetrator.

Anyway, maybe this will help from October 2015, though no doubt you'll not be able to welcome it for one reason or another. https://www.gov.uk/government/policies/reducing-and-managing-waste/supporting-pages/charging-for-single-use-plastic-carrier-bags
