The Auckland Nines

The NRL.com highlights clip of the women's game is short and pretty low-quality, but here it is anyway: https://www.nrl.com/auckland-nines-womens-game-one-new-zealand-v-australia/tabid/10959/contentid/719587/tabindex/2/default.aspx

Thank you. I enjoyed the little clip and would like to see more. A good friend of mine a fellow supporter of South Wales Scorpions suggests that the may beat us.

See post #71 for better clips, and from all three matches. I Tweeted ‏Teuila Fotu Moala (the Ferns player with the BIG hair) suggesting there should be a Tri-Nations women's Nines at next year's event and she responded, saying she'd be right up for it.

The AcrossTheTasman site have uploaded full coverage of each match.

can anyone give the attendances 2014 to 2015.

The rain and the early Warriors exit resulted in there only being around 20,000 in attendance for the final but those who remained saw a final they'll never forget as the two sides put on a defensive display a 13-man team would have been proud of.

"The tournament is locked in for five years; reading between the lines, the NRL wants to add teams and the organisers would rather not"

No explanation in the Guardian as to why the organisers don't want to add teams. My guess would be costs.

the problem is the amount of games with 16 teams, and the current structure pretty much guarantees warriors interest into the second day. Either you reduce the amount of nrl teams or lengthen the tournament. Not convinced either is a good idea.

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

The old world sevens event used to start on a Friday evening, then continue on the Saturday and Sunday. That could be an option.

The Friday night portion of the sevens was also played at an alternate ground if memory serves me correct.

Friday night at Mount Smart, then Saturday and Sunday at Eden Park could work..

Would love to see some International sides involved, and maybe the Maori and Aboriginal All-stars, but don't see it happening anytime soon.

Both points you make are correct and they are in line with what Dean Lonergan ( Ducco events creator...the promotional company that brainchilded this concept for those that don't know).

The vision was to bring the NRL stars to New Zealand as a point of difference to the Union sevens which uses specialists.

In the 1980's (pre Warriors) the NRL equivalent started playing promotional games in New Zealand at the spiritual home of NZ Rugby league (Carlaw park)....those games were sell outs.

The thinking around the nines was to bring back the stars of the Aussie comp and engage general sports fans ( you might as well call them unionist/golf/cricket cross over fans in this country).....so the other impediment to including say the Wigans etc.....is that they will not be a selling point for the general non rugby league fan.....whereas the NRL teams are.

Many Kiwis attend the nines to support teams other than the Warriors.

Not too many non rugby league fans would line up to see the mighty clubs from the Superleague (ignorance).

Personaly as a pure blood rugby league man from a league family I would prefer to see expansion and would support the two Warriors clubs with a passion in the Nines and any other ESL team ahead of the rest of the NRL sides.

Did many of the fans stick around for the Final Game.

Its a different beast than the full sized game, as a promotional vehicle for the game in NZ it has its place.

It appears some NRL Clubs were not that enthused for this event as they are building for the season and did not do more than the minimum compliance.

The old RL Sevens went down exactly the same path back in the day.

Talent is secondary to whether players are confident.

How did Greg Eden get on for Brisbane?

"Rugby League is rugby in the simplest form in the sense that it's about great defence, great tackling technique, good handling, good passing, catching and great kicking."

His first touch was impressive, beating a few defenders and making a lot of ground, but the Broncos overall were very underwhelming and never lifted their game. I can't really think of a stand-out player for them over the weekend.

Cheers Futtocks.

No doubt it will be a while before we see him again with Wayne Bennett's love child (Darius Boyd) back in town.
