Recommended Posts

The pub i have frequented for the last 45 years is closing, no explanation just "thats it" from the landlady one of the best pubs ever to open in wigan it would have been 50 years old this october.

suffice to say i and the other 21 members of our sports club are gutted it really is the end of an era. :(

Tradition pubs are closing at an alarming rate and yet we still see new ones opening!

Shame to hear that. Our area has lost a fair few pubs in the last 10 years (to be frank, a number were just ###### pubs) but a couple of gems were lost.

Recently another closed owing to "licensing irregularities", and a planning application made to turn it into a place of worship. A few people got together and got the council to list it as a "asset of community value". It might not save it as a pub, but it does buy the communtity some time rather than it just be sold to a property developer and see their local turned into flats at a whim. Might be an option for you?

The pubs that don't move on and constantly keep up with what is happening in the market will not prosper

Drinking only pubs are rare - and the only ones that are doing well in this sector are the small micropubs

Large plastic pubs playing loud music and only selling tasteless lager brands are now finding it difficult - tastes are changing a bit

Many Pubs (The Foot just around the corner from you -ish- has just closed) are closing because of the greed of the brewery's and pub chains. Marston's screwed the Landlord of The Holt Arms.

Many ex-Landlords etc. have realised that if they find the right place, which is not already a pub, then you can open a little drinking den for far less outlay than being tied. That is why a new breed of pubs are opening.

My fave Hull pub has just won a Camra award.

As long as they keep up the pickled eggs stock and array of great real ales, they'll get my vote.

My local, with 14 hand pumps on regular rotation, is in the top 16 pubs in the UK as selected by CAMRA :P

As good a reason as any to buy a house in the area!

Oddly enough when friends of ours moved here from Warrington this was one of their reasons for choosing Formby. :)

I'm actually thinking of bucking the trend and opening a pub this year

your entitled to your opinion, this is mine, "THE BOOT" has always been the best pub in the scholes area without a shadow of a doubt particularly over the last 15 years when it has been a shrine to wigan rl.

jimmmy and terri our hosts have been absolutey brilliant, their last night in there last saturday raised £2500 for cystic fibrosis, they will be badly missed.

the good news is such is the demand it reopened again on the thursday :drinks:

The majority of pubs near me (Hindley Green, Wigan) are pretty rubbish. Tasteless, ice cold "premium beers", karaoke 4 nights a week, plus a bouncy castle on Sunday.

However, the Swan in Hindley Green has recently changed hands and now sells Allgates plus a guest from outside the district. They had one on from Birmingham the other night, which was good. Friendly staff. At the other end of town I like the Hare and Hounds - shame the two are a couple of miles apart. I understand there's a new micro brewery opened in town (Padge might be able to add to that..?) and I look forward to trying it.

The one thing that amazes me living here though is the cost of a pint. I can't believe that you can get a decent pint for less than £2.00, and not in a 'spoons either.

That said, I much prefer beer from the south of England and Midlands nowadays...

disques vogue

The club where Eurovision isn't a dirty word. A waltz through the leopard skin lined world of Tom Jones, Bert Kampfert and Burt Bacharach. Step out to the sound of the happy hammond and swing to the seductive sounds of the samba.

DJ's, raffles, cocktails and wide collars. Please dress smart. Gentlemen might like to wear a suit.

Same price. Same music. Same rubbish prizes.

The new brewery in Hindley is Hophurst, it has been started by a guy I used to work woth Stuart Hurst, his beers are being very well received locally and if you see them on the bar I would certainly recommend giving them a try (no I'm not on commission Stuart knows what he's doing).

Being the best pub in Scholes is no recommendation.

I believe one of the barstaff is running it now (though that may be a temporary thing as I have heard the rumours about the site being flogged off).

The Cystic Fibrosis thing didn't have something to do with Ickey did it?

Get some Pictish Brews from Rochdale.  Lovely stuff.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I've got out of the pub habit in recent years, but have had builders in so resorted a few times to the Wetherspoons in Colindale (near the Hive) for peace and quiet and wi-fi. Doom Bar on tap (and well priced) plus other guest ales, which was a pleasant surprise, nice staff and a clientele of older folks in the front bar and family groups in the back.

Quiet and restful, and the armchairs by the open fire were vacant on two of my three visits. If this is typical, then Wetherspoons have improved since I was last in one.

Okay - the only other 'spoons that I've been in in the last few years is on the site of the old Marquee Club on Charing Cross Road, which was also very pleasant, if a little more noisy.

Some are fine, the one in Wigan centre is probably the worst I have ever been in for service and cleanliness, but I have been in some pleasant ones up and down the country. The thing is though some of the ones that I've been in that were once not bad places have dragged in all the dross from the pubs that Spoons have closed down by beating even the dregs of pubs into submission.

Wetherspoons is alright. Usually a decent choice of beer, food not bad, good prices...where's the problem?

The beer is bought on its sell by date and can often be on the cusp of being off, having a choice doesn't mean having quality. The food is awful, it is bland microwaved cardboard food.

I suppose you think McDonalds is quality as well.
