Doncaster RLFC Paul Cooke has fired a warning to his squad ahead of the new Kingstone Press Championship campaign.

Cooke’s side failed to win in pre-season with defeats to Hull FC, Castleford Tigers, Hunslet Hawks and Leeds Rhinos at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Dons boss sent out a clear message that things must improve ahead of the beginning of the Kingstone Press Championship and admitted nobody’s place is secure.

He said: “The players are aware, the players aren’t stupid, they don’t need telling by the staff that the first 15 minutes of the second half against Leeds wasn’t good enough.

“They don’t need telling that our play one areas are not good enough and they don’t need telling that when we have the ball and we give a penalty away, it’s the most cardinal sin to a rugby league player.

“It’s not rocket science and not something that we need to fix massively, we just need to address those areas and the individuals that are causing us problems and they either eradicate it or they just don’t play.

“It is a tough world that we are in and we have some decisions to make on players.

“Some players are going to be really disappointed come February 15th because they feel that they should be in there, but we are going to pick a team based on what we have seen over the past four weeks.

“We want to get started, it has been a long pre-season, the players certainly want to get started as far as competition goes.

“As I have said the players who have these issues either address them or they don’t play, it’s that simple.

“We can’t keep beating around the bush with players and wrapping them in cotton wool and putting our arms around players when they are still making the same mistakes as when we played Hull FC on January 11th.”
