New era for Rugby League in Croydon

Recommended Posts

South London Storm and Croydon Hurricanes have agreed to come together under the Hurricanes banner, with the Storm name retained for Masters only.

Storm had been planning to play merit league this summer, but the club's committee saw the sense in the name change to one more identifiable with the majority of young RL players in the area, almost all of whom played youth rugby for Hurricanes. For the Hurricanes the merger has meant that the club now has the full pathway to Open Age without the issue of finding additional volunteers to run the side. It's definately a win win for all, with the 'new' club intending to field the following sides in 2015.

Masters

Open Age

U17

U15

U13 (provisionally)

Minis

The decision to have an Open Age team has already created quite a stir with a number of former Hurricanes players wanting to play, including many members of last year's U17s.

The other plus is that an influx of adults should help to consolidate, then build upon the work being done at youth/junior level. The Hurricanes have contracted over the past two or three years (since the disappearance of the Sport England funding), the intention from here is very much to grow the club at all levels.

On a personal note, it's sad that the South London Storm name has been 'retired' at Open Age but it's all still the same club. Hurricanes were born out of Storm, so it's simply a coming together again.

The juniors/youth are already in training and the Open Age will commence on Tuesday 31 March.

A new kit design for all age groups is on the horizon, with new colours to represent Hurricanes, Storm and the local council (who've been extremely supportive), and there'll be an innovative range of merchandise available in the near future.

This year is one of consolidation, but there's no reason why the club can't get back to where it was only a few short years ago.
