The Wests Tigers will be forced to finish the 2021 NRL season without utility back Adam Doueihi.

One of the Tigers' only shining lights in an otherwise dismal season, Doueihi was left out of Michael Maguire's side to play the Penrith Panthers on Sunday afternoon when it was named earlier this afternoon.

It has now been reported that Doueihi has done a partial tear of his ACL and will be heading home to Sydney tomorrow.

I hope Joey Manu is ok, it looked like a fractured eye socket and cheekbone he suffered.

I find the NRL rule interpretations really bizarre and inconsistent. I don’t understand how that wasn’t a red card for Mitchell. He looks like rightly copping a long ban, which will likely see him miss the finals

Bulldogs Clearout:

Dylan Napa and Lachlan Lewis head a lengthy list of players departing the Bulldogs after this weekend’s final round of the regular season.

The club confirmed in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that nine players will be leaving. That’s on top of Super League bound Will Hopoate, Nick Meaney who’s heading to the Storm and Roosters recruit Renouf Atoni.

Also leaving the Bulldogs is Sione Katoa, Dean Britt, Chris Smith, Bradley Deitz, Falakiko Manu, James Roumanos and Watson Heleta.

Interestingly, Adam Elliott was not on the list.

Following on from comments made in the R26 match thread and in particular the Wests Tigers performance:

Quote

Wests Tigers have taken the unusual step of announcing five players will exit the club while three still remain unsigned for 2022.

The Tigers will lose Moses Mbye to the St George Illawarra Dragons, Billy Walters to the Brisbane Broncos and Russell Packer to retirement, however, after a dismal season which included a 38-0 pasting at the hands of wooden spooners the Canterbury Bulldogs yesterday and a bottom-four finish, Michael Chee-Kam and Joseph Leilua have both been released by the club.

None of the trio hold contracts heading into the 2022 season, although there has been strong speculation linking Chee-Kam to the South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Walters to the Brisbane Broncos.

Leilua is unlikely to be signed by an NRL club, with no reported interest to this stage after an underwhelming two-year stint at Concord.

any more for any more?

I'm glad I'm not Maguire because I don't have any constructive ideas.  I don't even know where to start. I can't think of a single reason why anybody should be a Wests fan other than that most of us are leftovers from the pre-merger era.

If we sack everyone then who do we buy for next year?

The CEO is conducting a season review. If it were a tick list of say 10 items, how many crosses would there be?

The Tigers’ next board meeting is scheduled for the end of September, however according to the Herald a decision on Maguire is expected to be made before then.

Maguire signed a new deal back in December to remain at the Tigers until the end of 2023. But as we all know, a contract means next to nothing in the modern NRL world.

Maguire has been on shaky ground ever since the opening rounds of the season. The club was even forced to release a statement following a 40-6 loss to Manly on Anzac Day, “vehemently” denying reports of “crisis meetings.”

That beating in R25 by the wooden spoon team is surely putting another nail in Maguires coffin?

The last three seasons has seen Wests slip down the ladder each time missing the top 8, each time dropping further down. Dark days in Tiger Town.

Blake Ferguson is reportedly set to leave the NRL to take up a contract in Japanese rugby union.

Ferguson, who is off-contract at the end of the year, has previously been linked with a move to the 15-man game, but in Australia with the Western Force.

According to a Daily Telegraph report, he is now being linked to a move to Japan to be coached by former Wallabies mentor Michael Cheika at the NEC Green Rockets.

Joey Leilua is willing to make the transition to become a prop in a bad to reignite his NRL career after being given the flick by the Tigers.

The former Canberra and Roosters star was released by the Wests Tigers earlier this week after a failed switch to the joint venture.

He did play second row forward in his youth.

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has thrown his support behind Billy Slater for the vacant head coaching position with the Queensland Maroons and believes there isn’t “a more passionate person” for the role.

Previous Maroons coach Paul Green announced his resignation on Tuesday night, as the QRL wanted a coach solely dedicated to the Maroons role and not looking to pursue an NRL coaching gig.

The 48-year-old was unable to guarantee he’d turn down future NRL coaching positions and left his post after just one Origin series, which the Maroons lost.

I feel your pain @Farmduck. The club is a shambles. I don’t think sacking McGuire is the right move either.

The whole club seems to be stuck in mediocrity.

The club struggles with its identity. There is are two very different suburban socio-economic bases that the club aspires to inspire. In between those suburban spaces there are two of the biggest clubs in Sydney. I don’t know what the Wests Tigers stand for. The name itself is near on anonymous and inaccurate. Balmain hardly even fits the description of inner west these days.

From what we see of the CEO on Tales From Tiger Town, he hardly appears to be the inspiring leader.

Tim Sheens’ imminent arrival… I don’t think going back to the past is the answer either. I just find the whole club lacking any credible inspiration. I really do feel for the club’s fans.

Controversial rugby league star Josh Dugan has been sacked by the Cronulla Sharks over his second Covid breach in quick succession this season.

The Daily Telegraph reported the Cronulla board chose to sack Dugan after he was twice caught by police breaking NSW Covid-19 health orders on a trip to Lithgow.

Adam Elliott has been sacked by Canterbury with two years left to run on his NRL contract.

The Bulldogs severed ties with the 26-year-old after his third off-field incident in recent years, leaving the forward without an NRL club for next season.

Sad isn't it?

For the third year in a row, the Warriors will be based in Australia for the 2022 NRL season.

The Kiwi outfit announced the plans on Thursday, but confirmed they hold hopes to play up to half of their games in New Zealand.

How long before the NZRL use this as a reason to refuse to come to the 2022 world cup? Or will they wait till the NRL tell them to withdraw? Massive sympathy for the players and their families who must be wondering where "home" is.

The hearing for Sam Verrills has started. The Roosters hooker, represented by lawyer James McLeod, is seeking a downgrade of a grade-two careless high tackle charge stemming from a shot on Titans centre Brian Kelly.

If successful, Verrills will be free to face the Sea Eagles in Friday night's knockout semi-final and get away with an $1150 fine. He will cop a two-match ban if the charge is upheld. Verrills opted not to take an early guilty plea that would have resulted in a one-game suspension.

Well that didn’t go to plan did it?

Instead of getting off… or downgraded…

Roosters have suffered a blow ahead of their semi-final game with Manly. Sam Verrills has been given a two-week suspension for a high tackle.

Verills was slapped with a grade two careless high tackle charge after his hit on Titans centre Brian Kelly.

Sam appeared by phone video link and was hoping to escape with a fine.

His lawyer argued for the downgrading but in the end the panel of Ben Creagh, Bob Lindner and Dallas Johnson upheld the grade two charge.

Melbourne Storm player Harry Grant has admitted he wants Brandon Smith to re-sign with the club, even if it means he will be stuck on the bench for years to come.

The 23-year-old is considered one of the best hookers in the competition, already producing high-quality performances at State of Origin level, but remains in the No.14 jumper at club level due to Smith's own form.

The messy parting of the ways between the Wests Tigers and premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire is expected to be finalised this week.

Aside from the debacle of the 38-0 loss to Canterbury-Bankstown in round 25 the other telling reason why the Tigers are tipped to make the tough decision is the club’s inability to sign players.

The Wests Tigers eight-member board still need to convene in an official capacity and vote on Maguire’s exit but the decision appears obvious considering the club has gone backwards over the course of the last three seasons.
