It's now just stupid.  Especially the way they've split the increase across the packages to make it look like it's not all about them paying idiot money for a bunch of football matches.  I called up last week to cancel and the woman I spoke to was the most patronising person I've spoken to in years, "of course it's not all about the football, we've invested in all these new programmes for you as well as the technological advances".  When I challenged her on that she started waffling about improvements that meant nothing to anyone but a marketing numpty who knew nothing about technology.

She the started on about value for money.  I countered with "Netflix is £6 a month and they don't have an ego issue with football, I could get Netflix, Amazon Prime and anything else out there and still have over £50 a month extra in my pocket if I cancelled you"

Sky isn't value for money at all and they've picked on a bad enemy in BT.  BT have very, very deep pockets backed up by a number of very successful other lines of business where they can almost indefinitely loss-lead competing against Sky.  Then there's the other side of Netflix and Amazon Prime where I can get most of what I want for a fraction of what Sky charge.  They have to be very careful or they'll go the way of Blockbuster.

Sounds like she was reading from a script.

Quite definitely was.  What really winds me up is that I can increase my Sky package immediately online with absolutely no fuss but if I want to remove functions I need to call their cancellation hotline and be on hold for 30 minutes followed by waffle from patronising people "for my own security".

I've cut my Sky Movies off with immediate effect, reduced to their basic bundle and this'll be my last year of Sky Sports.  But for the rugby that'd have gone immediately as well, I'll cut that at the end of the season and really can't see me taking it up again at those prices.

No cable where I live so I'm stuck with sky, but as soon as cable gets up here sky's gone.

I've never had sky.... me n the murdoch's have a special relationships. They don't know me but I can't do wi the set o' ####s!

Paying anything into their pockets just goes against the grain.

You will be very, very lucky to cancel Sky without tearing your hair out.

They will tell out and out lies, such as :

I need a supervisor to cancel and their isn't one on the floor at the moment

We can't cancel after 2pm or 3pm each day (if you phone after work)

There's a problem with the systems at the moment, please call back tomorrow

Etc, etc

Just hold your nerve, be very firm but fair. Allow yourself to be put on hold, and then listen to them taking the ###### out of you when they know you ain't budging. They have a number of cases to deal with so will eventually give in.

However, this was 3/4 years ago and they may have changed and give customer service.............

If you're paying by DD just cancel it (after telling them you plan to do so).

So for security reasons they allow you (or anyone else) to increase the cost of your subscription, but to allow it to be reduced in cost is too much of a 'security' risk to allow you to manage this yourself without 'support'.

With Premiership Rugby now on BT Sport and an Amazon Prime subscription I no longer have any real interest in SKY.

I have a NOW TV box plugged into my TV so if there are one off sports matches on SKY that I want to watch I can buy a day pass which work out much cheaper

Sky are making a big mistake by arrogantly assuming they are an essential service.

They now have a proper committed rival in the form of BT (as well as virgin but thats no where near the same scale). Remember they moved into BT's market by offering phone services and internet. BT had to respond by going for Sky's big TV asset. Football.

The Murdoch empire thinks it's untouchable but then it's never gone up against a multi-service behemoth like BT before.  Virgin couldn't keep up with Sky because they've nothing else really that's of the 9-10 figure profit pool to subsidise a battle with, BT have plenty of profit lines where they can loss-lead for a few years without concern.  Sky's only real income source are subscribers and I think they're over the highest point of reasonable charging now and right into losing profitable customers.

I got rid of Sky years ago and haven't missed it and its this boards fault!

You lot were getting discounts once the Grand Final was over, I phoned up to do the same, they refused, I asked to cancel and it was done and dusted in minutes!

So many other services out there these days I could never justify forking out £50 to £100 a month again on TV.
