Recommended Posts

This Saturday the South West Men's Rugby League season kicks off with the ninth annual nines tournament at Duckes Meadow, Exeter. Teams from Devon's four Rugby League clubs will battle it out with the Cornish Rebels and other invited clubs.

The season proper begins the following weekend with matches in Barnstable (The North Devon Raiders versus the Devon Sharks) and Plymouth ( Titans versus the Exeter Centurions) culminating in the play off final in late August. This season also includes a three match origin season between Cornwall and Devon with the first game in Redruth Cornwall on the 24th of May. Great start to the season down in the South West.

Forget The Summer Bash in Blackpool and that game in Aus, the big game this weekend takes place on Sunday in Redruth Cornwall. A very enthusiastic Devon side will take on the might of Cornwall in the first of a three match series! Can the Devonians match the Cornish and silence their passionate support?

Apparently there is a heatwave on the way! Come and watch some great Rugby League and enjoy the bars and beaches of Cornwall as well!!

Devon pulled off a shock beating Cornwall in a thriller in the first of the three match county of origin series. The Devon boys built up a substantial lead which the Cornish almost overcame. A missed conversion after the hooter meant Devon took the spoils and left the Cornish eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

This weekend the Cornish Rebels versus the table topping Exeter Centurions is the pick of the games in the South West! Short term revenge for the Cornish or the spoils for the 'Cents?'

The South West Men's League Cup Final takes place next Saturday at Saltash RFC. The final between Exeter Centurions and the Cornish Rebels will be preceded by a league match between Plymouth Titans and The North Devon Raiders, kick off 1.45pm. Entry is free to all and both matches should be gripping contests. The Centurions will be looking to avenge a recent league loss at the home of the Rebels, whilst the Rebels will be looking to maintain there 100% start to the season.

If you are in the Plymouth area on Saturday come along and enjoy some quality Rugby League!

South West RL news update

Congratulations to the Exeter who took the honours in the Cup Final last week. In a hotly contested final the Centurions beat the Cornish Rebels for the first time. Plymouth Titans beat the North Devon Raiders in the preceding match of the double header.

In yesterday's games the Plymouth Titans beat the Devon Sharks, two in a row now for the previously struggling Titans, and the Somerset Vikings beat the Centurions in Exeter. This match was a friendly played for the Trans Blackdown Trophy! Great match lots of tries and a number of players making their RL senior debuts.

Next weekend it is the second match of the South West Origin Series. Cornwall and Devon will lock horns next Saturday in Launceston, 3pm KO. It should be a thriller if the first game was anything to go by. Can Devon put the series to bed with a second victory or will the Cornish be able to set up a decider in Teignmouth! Enjoy your RL today who ever you are watching and roll on next weekend.

May be one day involve Somerset and Gloucestershire in counties origin too.

"It involves matters much greater than drafting the new rules...the original and existing games have their own powerful appeal to their players and public and have the sentiments which history inspires"  - Harold 'Jersey' Flegg 1933

Eventually, that is the plan though it could be a West of England League rep side to join Devon and Cornwall in a tri-series.

The other possibility may be a link with one of the Channel Islands. Not sure which one but picked up somewhere that Paul Smith who once played SL at the Giants was involved. I think he was teaching in that part of the world.

Massive game this weekend when the Exeter Centurions take on the Cornish Rebels. With both teams tied on ten points the winner will have a massive advantage going into the last round of fixtures. The Centurions look to have the more difficult fixture the following Saturday when they travel to the fast improving Sharks. Indeed the Sharks, having become the first team to win in Cornwall, must fancy their chances of Grand Final Success should they win their qualifying playoff.

Saturday 25th Exeter versus Rebels free entry - Flowerpot Meadow, Exeter.

Saturday 1st August Devon Sharks versus ExeterCenturions and the Plymouth Titans (assuming they raise a team) versus the Cornish Rebels.

Saturday 8th. Second versus third play off.

Saturday 15th The Grand Final

Sunday 23rd Devon versus Cornwall in the Decider! Hopefully an expanded competition in years to come if previous comments are anything to go by.

A hugely exciting end to the season! Enjoy your Rugby League and if you can get along to lend your support it is much appreciated.

Rebels conceded their visit to Exeter on Saturday meaning Centurions are two points ahead and 20 points better points difference of Rebels with one game left.

Exeter visit Torquay to play Devon Sharks.

Rebels travel to Plymouth.

Out of curiousity, do you promote these games thru flyers at any of the known backpacker hangouts ( Accomodation, bars, tourist sites) ?

Might get the odd Antipodean or other curious onlooker come along.

Any access into the travellers mags that are everywhere in London ?

All the best for the big games ahead !

The Rugby League Fan's Mantra for helping the game grow internationally is ten two-letter words - IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME.
