Taxpayers' Alliance: Cut pensioner benefits 'immediately'

Mr Wild, who is research director of the think tank which campaigns for lower taxes and highlights examples of Government waste, said the cuts should be made "as soon as possible after an election for two reasons".

"The first of which will sound a little bit morbid - some of the people... won't be around to vote against you in the next election. So that's just a practical point, and the other point is they might have forgotten by then."

He added: "If you did it now, chances are that in 2020 someone who has had their winter fuel cut might be thinking, 'Oh I can't remember, was it this government or was it the last one? I'm not quite sure.'

:O

"it is a well known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it."

You might as well talk about a tame cobra as a compassionate tory

We should have gone with the Australian style pension system of compulsory savings instead of the half baked system they introduced. That way they would already be well on the way to being able to phase out most pension benefits within the next 2 generations

Nah, just persecute the poorest sections of society "are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons?"

Liz Truss will get our children to be taught the proper name of animals...

What are they being taught now???

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

As opposed to a Labour leader who would probably just start another war in the middle east to distract from their failings at home.

Where have you been for the last few weeks; must be the only person in the country who doesn't know the new chap's a pacifist?

I once met a senior officer in the army who was a pacifist but also a realist.  His view was to have such a well trained military and group of friends plus the political will to hit hard that no-one wanted to fight you because of the consequences.  He called it first-strike pacifism.  Took me a few years to understand the really deep grasp of things behind that that makes it so true.

Ah, an honest Tory politician at last.  They want us to be just like China and America where working until you drop in servitude to your political masters is expected except for the minority with the luck and family money to avoid it.  In China, foul working practices and human rights abuses of workers is just part of the deal.  In the US, you hope you stay healthy enough to keep working until you die.

That's not even remotely pacifist.

Osbourne is trying to set his stall firmly on the central plains.  Then one comment by Hunt blows it out of the water.

The tax credit cut was framed as being financial, part of balancing the books, a necessary change, Hunt's comment puts it firmly in the idealogical frame.

Compassion is present in every Conservative politician; it's just not openly visible, being camouflaged beneath a superficial air of smug condescension.

However, this hidden compassionate nature bursts to the surface whenever they hear three magic words:

Lights, Camera, Action.

Under Scrutiny by the Right-On Thought Police

George has pitched himself as the central/'liberal' candidate.

Boris is attacking him on tax credits.

May is pitching for the UKIP end of the Tory party.

The election race is up and running.

You know the world is totally screwed when Osborne is the liberal candidate!

I think there are around 18 people who have hinted that they might run for leader.

Though that 18 includes such luminaries as Liz Truss so I doubt many will go any distance!
