This is an area where people shouldn't even notice cuts. Nobody in this part of Oxfordshire is going to think of themselves as on benefits or state dependent. And, yet, the infrastructure is falling apart - and for absolutely no benefit to the country whatsoever. Reductions in spending were needed. Absolutely. But we also needed to increase taxes and invest in the economy. 7 years on from the initial farce and I don't see how any of that has been done by either Labour, the Coalition or now the Tories alone. But one works for a council and is therefore public sector. I'm sure some mud can be slung about inefficiencies, jollies and other well out of date notions. East Sussex and Hastings have to find cuts of 40% apparently. I'm not sure that's even possible. One of the most deprived areas of the country with greatest levels of drug dependency combined with low education achievement and high incidences of mental ill-health --- forty per cent. Most councils have now accepted their council grant will reduce to zero by 2020 but the ban on increasing council tax beyond 1.99% means that there's nowhere else for them to go. They COULD go to a referendum but then that'd be trusting the public to vote for a large tax rise, never the most popular of things. It'll get worse for councils in the next couple of years with the decoupling of many community care things in the NHS to councils. The Tories wanted to cut them but couldn't due to NHS working so they've changed ownership to the councils now they're all the council's problem with no extra income to do the work. Do you know what REALLY gets me about this though is that there are still people who will be voting Tory despite being the victim of all these cuts. It's not the Tories' fault apparently, it's the waste in the system, it's immigrants, it's Labour, and so on. There was another piece on the news about Sunday trading laws and the SNP threatening to derail it despite it being to deregulate Sunday trading in England and Wales. The thing that they didn't say is that the Bill is UK wide and would affect Scotland as well, reducing employment rights for Scottish workers including protection of higher standards for unsociable hours. Basically, those other countries, everyone knows first aid. They learn it at school and then they learn it again in their jobs. First Aid isn't something assigned to the staff member who drew the short straw. So if someone collapses in the street there's a decent chance people around them will both know first aid and be confident using it. That is not true here. We had an exchange teacher at school for science when I was in my first year of secondary school, she was American (Miss Yuchida), she was appalled that First Aid wasn't on the curriculum so she taught us it for four lessons. I think it's utterly shameful that this was blocked just because some MPs wanted to be petty by ensuring that backbench promoted Members' Bills don't become law. He has a track record of blocking everything, just because he can.
