Grand Final Referee

Recommended Posts

Referee: Ben Thaler (Wakefield)

Touch Judges: Tony Martin and James Child

Video Referees: Richard Silverwood and Phil Bentham.

Excellent appointment as Ben follows in the footsteps of Russell Smith and Richard Silverwood in officiating both the Challenge Cup Final and Super League Grand Final in the same year.

How does Tony Martin keep getting the gigs. Seems hopeless and generally confuses the ref with his input.

I don't get the rationale behind the two video ref thing ? Those are both top refs , they must know the protocols and rules ... Why have two ? And what if they disagree .

I had a good chat with Steve Ganson at Headingley the other week when covering Leeds v Castleford.

He basically said the reason for the two video referee system is that regardless of the on field referees original decision, with two video referees you either get a vote of 3-0 or 2-1 after reviewing the video evidence.

He did say that they would be a thorough root and cause investigation at the end of the season to see if the system (we use the same one as the NRL) is workable and delivering the right decisions.

The whole 2 video refs was brought in because Ganson made a howler as a video ref didn't he in the Hull derby when Chris Green scored.

Thanks chief . I think firstly they need to review the protocol of having the ref make a call before handing it over . At times it's a guess , and the video ref is shackled by that decision and wrong calls can be upheld if so called conclusive evidence doesn't emerge . Common sense seems to be forgotten . If you hand it over just let the video ref do his job with an open mind . That's one thing from Oz that never should have made it here . Go back to how it was if we want more correct decisions

Agreed, i also think Robert Hicks has come on a long way this year and could be a top referee in time

Expect a slow play-the-ball with Thaler in charge. If he had been reffing last year's final, he would have given Hohaia the old 'get on with it' call and had a stern word with Flower in the line as the game continued.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.
