Time for a new TV deal?

Recommended Posts

You would think it would be in Sky's interest to show some lower level games on fta. Then they could use those games as a "loss leader" and shamelessly plug Super league on their PTV channels.

"If you love this, imagine how good this weekends Superleague fixture will be"

Championship or league 1 games are of such a good standard that they could be used as a taster and be one way of spreading the game to a wider audience.

And by showing these games on FTA channels, just think of the extra money the Champ clubs would get by a charging Sky for broadcasting their games?

After all we are keep being told the Sky deal is the sole property of the SL, that being the case the Championship would/could negotiate it own deal for televised games!

Aren't we going round in circles here the championship decided to pull out of the Sky deal a few years ago so it could negotiate its own. It then spent years without a TV deal before Premier took them on.

I don't think Premier/Setanta were paying them much (or anything) either.

Maybe wrong here Bob, but didn't Setanta/Premier take on the Championship when SKY decided they no longer wanted to screen it, along with International games, NRL games and State of Origin.

Is it time to negotiate with a different supplier?

Before starting this thread you did realise didn't you that they signed a new 5yr deal with Sky for SL and a new deal with the BBC for the CC ? So this whole debate is a bit pointless

The only RL not signed up to a TV deal at the moment is the Championship (excluding the middle 8's games as Sky have 1st pick of those as well)

I would like to see Sky show one Championship game a week on their free to air digital platform. If they promoted this properly, it could help to promote Rugby League in general and attract subscribers to their subscription channels.

Not strictly true - Sky have the rights to show the Championship and simply do not exercise them. There is talk that there may be Championship games next season on the Sky Sports Xtra service which was trialled in the 8s this year (as mentioned in a recent RLW) - but any channel wanting to show Championship RL live would have to do a deal with Sky - so there is a deal, it's just a pretty bad one for the Championship fans.
