Doncaster RLFC are pleased to confirm young centre Alex Gilbey has signed a new contract with the club.

The 20-year-old, who was one of nine players from last season who was offered a new deal with the Dons.

Alex has now joined the likes of Kyle Kesik, Sam Doherty, Brad Foster and Tom Carr by penning a contract until the end of the 2016 season, our 16th confirmed recruit.

Last year Alex made four appearances for the Dons, with his last coming in the defeat to Whitehaven on the final day of the campaign.

The youngster joined Doncaster from Hull KR's Academy a year ago and it is now hoped his progress will continue by making a regular breakthrough into the first team next year.

Speaking about the deal head coach Gary Thornton said: "Alex came to the club straight from under 19's level and had limited game time last season for us, only playing handful of games.

"It is very hard for players to make the transition from that level, particularly in the Championship, but Alex has shown a terrific attitude on and off the pitch and this is a reward for the hard work he has put in.

"It is important not just to have a quick fix, Alex is a young player with a lot of potential, who we want to improve with us over a number of years.

"I expect him to play more games next year than last season and I am sure he will continue to learn and develop a player."
