TRANSPORT OPTIONS TO BOWER FOLD, STALYBRIDGE

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'll start it off..........

For those east of Oldham, a quick option is the following:-

184 bus which arrives at GREENFIELD station at 1.29pm

Train at 1.36pm, arriving in STALYBRIDGE at 1.45pm

Return journey:-

5.28pm train arriving in GREENFIELD at 5.37pm

184 leaves here for Oldham at 5.48pm

Plenty of opportunities for a beer along the way as well if time permits:-

The Railway opposite Greenfield Station

Stalybridge station has its own bar serving real ales and also serves food.

Nice one! ....This is the sort thing I like. It gives people options to travel to Bower

Fold. The more info, the better. Especially Pub-food related information. When I go to a game. I use it as a day out. So plan my drinking route with military precision.

Try this then Manc...

Start Station Buffet, fine real ales, good food at reasonable price (try the pies) and trains to watch !!!!

Come out of railway station, turn right, call at Old Fleece (cheap and cheerful boozer), then White House (Hyde's cask).

Onward  to Melbourne St - call at Society Rooms (Wetherspoons), then Lord Stamford, formerly the Stop and Rest - plenty of (ahem) "local colour" here.

Ever onward towards Acres Lane, call at Stalybridge Labour Club, again good cask ales on, followed by Old Hunter's Tavern, decent pint of Robbie's. Pop in to Organ, old school boozer, flat caps de rigeure.

Cross Mottram Road at lights, bob in "Number 71", formerly Conservative Club who have happily thrown the doors open to the massed throngs of FCUM fans in recent seasons. Pop behind kebab shop to Stocks Inn, strong footy pub, MUFC fans in the main, a bit cliquey, but chance of another pint. (Think it's all keg though).

That's your lot for now, about ten minutes walk from here up the hill to the ground and a pint in the somewhat dilapidated (but welcoming) clubhouse. If attendances are decent, possible the proprietor of the Cinnamon Tree curry house may open up for fans to use the bar. Celtic may decide to throw open the sponsor's lounge to all and sundry. Decent pie, peas and gravy, also home made soup available from Mike in the hut.

Brilliant, much appreciated. I'll definitely pay a visit to those hostelries suggested by your good self.

Best behaviour in The Stocks nowadays, I believe.

The police attached conditions to the licence when the new gaffer took over, so any mither and it will be shut down.

No problem for Oldham fans I'd have thought, the knuckle-draggers watching Premier League in their replica shirts don't understand rugby, bit too cerebral for them. (As are knives and forks...)

Anyone else up for a bit of Shanks' Pony once or twice in the season.  Google tells me it's 2hrs 20mins walking from Watersheddings to Bower Fold.

'sheddings -> Greenacres -> Lees -> Over Hartshead Pike -> Heyrod -> Bower Fold.

90 mins from Whitebank but that's mostly main roads.

Just an idea for a sunny Sunday, set off at 11, stop at a pub for a refresher about 12.30 then walk the remainder to get there in good time for the game.  Bunch of us in Red and White.

I like the train from Greenfield to Stalybridge idea.  It's £3-50 return, arriving, on Sundays, at Stalybridge at 1-48pm.  If we don't fancy the walk to the ground, there are buses ( Number 237 ) leaving the station at 2-06pm and 2-36pm.  It's a 6-minute bus trip to the Bower Fold ground.

After the match, buses leave the ground at 4-56pm and 5-13pm to get back to the station in plenty of time for the 5-28pm train back to Greenfield.

Roll on Feb. 7th!!

Incidentally, has anybody noticed that Oldham Rugby's very first game ever - on October 21st. 1876 - was against..................Stalybridge.

Did it on quite a few occasions a few years back.

Lees, then Springhead, Grotton, Top Mossley, then Luzley Road / Arlies Lane and come out at bottom of Mottram Road, you're then about 15 minutes walk from Bower Fold. If you get a good wiggle on, you can do it in well under two hours, I've done it from the Conquered Bear when totally plastered.

Would anyone be interested in getting a bus from the oldham town center??

I think a well organised, advertised supporter coach/bus from Oldham town centre will be used by lots of "Roughyeds" supporters. In time, it will become an essential part of the match day experience for many fans.

I love your new found optimism and go get em attitude, I know it's not your spiritual home but from little acorns mighty oaks grow.

LOL if your follow the boozers trail would you ever get to the match, but you would have fun trying.

You could all be Oldham ambassadors by meeting the trains arriving at Stalybridge and escorting the away fans to the ground in friendship and harmony, not sure about afterwards.

Cheers Roger(Batley fan).
