Government Alcohol Intake Guidelines

Recommended Posts

They are on the planet where drinking that level of alcohol is harmful. Let's face it, it's a dangerous, addictive chemical with long term harmful effects and which can induce anti-social and self-harming behaviour. If it were discovered now, it would be instantly banned.

However, it's only a guideline so carry on, folks....

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

That doesn't make any of them good for you though.

Slightly off topic but talking about the 'drug of choice' made me think of aspirin that is very widely used around the world but if it had been developed today and submitted for approval by government agencies it would most likely never be approved due to it's risk profile.

Quite.  And nobody is suggesting banning booze or anything like it.  Rather, after a twenty-plus year review of all the available data they've decided that, in the past, risks have been downplayed and any benefits overstated.

New UK Government guidelines recommend a binge-drinking limit of 3 pints of beer.

I'll probably limit myself to three pints tonight.

Got to get through this bottle of Pinot Gris first though.

Its a fairly damming piece and the guidelines would seem draconian for anyone that likes a few beers

I'm surprised that there are only 9 replies on this subject, I expected more like 9 pages by now..........are we all thinking oh s*$t??  ;)

Or are we just ignoring it?

They're guidelines, not rules.

Must admit I've been suspicious of the "glass a day keeps the doctor away" advice.....stands to reason that, if you're adding a toxin to your system, it's best to give your body as much break from it as possible (i.e. at least 1 day off between drinking) and I've tried to follow that rule for a while now....obvs the longer you can abstain to give your system a break, the better. After NYD I promised myself a dry January and I'm hoping I can abstain for another 3 weeks (counting down the days!)........can't see many weekend bingers sticking to the 3 pint guideline though....I'm afraid that when I'm on it - i am indeed on it and 3 would be a mere warm up

You are right to be suspicious if you are getting info from newspapers.

Once over the age of sixty, a small amount of alcohol does seem to do good.  Before then, it is almost always bad.  The amount over 60 should be daily, about a small glass of wine or half a pint or so.  THe benefits of red wine over beer or spirits apply if you are in a wine drinking country, vodka is best in Russia and beer in Britain.  In other words, whatever makes you fit in.

Confined to barracks but quite fancy going out for a few pints.

Got a load of booze in the house but its not the same.

Pot of tea it is, then.

:(

You're very much like me then; I really can't take to drinking in the house and rarely ever bother. If pubs ceased to exist I'd probably end up tea-total.

Crossing the road increases your risk of dying.  Watching Fev increases my risk of dying. Everything carries a risk. Humans have been drinking alcohol for thousands of years.  The ancient name for yeast was "godisgood"  Everything you do increases your risk of dying. Being born increases your risk of dying.  I see nothing wrong with drinking alcohol in moderate amounts.  Which is what I'm dong while I type this post.

These statistics are always reached after extensive research.

I for one will follow the guide lines to the letter.

Taking this into account and allowing for the drink I have had so far this year,I will officially be allowed a small sherry on December 28th.

Has anyone got the address for Dignitas?

To be fair, their fans aren't anywhere near as nasty, nowadays.

No need when the opposition crumble like the Bulls did last July at Odsal
